This is a difficult puzzle that quite possibly has no solution. Note: at this time I cannot go to a store and acquire more parts.

Goal: To use computer speakers (or headphones, same connector) to play the sound from my ps3.

Materials I have:

1) Playstation 3 which outputs RCA (red/white) males
2) Computer speakers with the normal 1/8 inch male stereo connector (in their place I'm using headphones to conduct tests right now)
3) Stereo female to female coupler which I picked up at radio shack trying to get the materials to make this work
4) RCA (red/white) females to mono 1/8 inch male which I picked up at radio shack today trying to gather useful materials
5) RCA (red/white) males to stereo 1/8 inch male (I have TWO of these actually)
6) 1/8 inch stereo female to two separate mono 1/8 inch male
7) 1/8 inch stereo male to male
8) 1/8 inch stereo female to 1/4 inch stereo male
9) PS/2 (computer) connector to stereo male AND RCA (red/white) males AND video (yellow) male and PS/2 female

What I am not allowed to use: my receiver which would avoid the whole darn problem but I won't have it with me in the new location.

Progress so far: I plug the RCA males from the PS3 into the RCA females with the mono male (#4 above), then plug the mono plug into the female stereo 1/8 inch coupler (#3 above), then plug the computer speakers/headphones (#2 above) into the other end of the female coupler. Result: I get both channels mixed together (I think) into one mono channel that only plays from one speaker (using item #6 I can switch which speaker it plays from but can't get both).

Second Experiment: I've discovered that using item #9 I can short the pins of the ps/2 male in order to have each channel of the stereo male 'pass thru' to the female RCAs (red/white). If I could find a good way to short them permanently then I guess I would have a solution (so far the only way I can do it is carefully with a paperclip... I have identified the pins that need to be shorted... two of them are adjacent and two of them aren't (but are adjacent to the other pin of note and therefore I have to be extra careful about not touching extra pins).

If you can help me with making my solution #2 a reality or can think of an alternate #3 with the materials given or using materials that you have reason to suspect I might have available currently please let me know. If you know of a part for sale at radioshack/etc that is very cheap and solves my problems also please let me know.

If anyone actually "solves" this using the materials above I will be very impressed lol

I have no idea why you have so many connections but this is how mine works:
PS3 -> hdmi(should work same as RCA) -> tv -> RCA to 3.5mm adapter plugged into "audio out" -> speakers
how reasonable is it to eat off wood instead of your tummy?

I won't have a tv.

BTW I just discovered I think I can just short all the pins together. How do you short a bunch of pins together without technical equipment?

Cut off the connectors and wire the actual cables together?

I was considering that although I'm afraid that it might not work well... I'm guessing the wiring inside is pretty shitty and will just fall apart rather than just being simple wires... can anyone weigh in on this?

Ugh this is annoying... I just need a way to short ALL the pins together... is there something like conducting bubble gum!?

Don't you just need a female RCA to 1/8" stereo (and #3 if the stereo connector's male)?

Or splice 4&5 together?

Yes, and they didn't have this :<

Do you know if splicing these things together actually works? Once I break something open there's no going back...

As long as you're not cutting the actual connectors to the PS3/speakers, I don't really see what you have to lose. These cables should be close to free anyway? Just twist the exposed wires up and tape them together.

There's no going back... to Radio Shack? :p

It's a leaning experience. Crack em open and find out!

Well basically I am using my ps3 on Wednesday...

Right now I have a solution (solution 1) which gets one speaker playing the combined mono audio... which is bad but not terrible.

If I can find a way to short these pins together I think I have a full (albiet stupid) solution (solution 2).

If I damage the part I bought today (#4) then I lose solution 1 until I buy another part (these aren't expensive but they are still 4-5 dollars each). If I damage #9 then I lose the chance for solution 2 to be a fix-all.

What exactly are you suggesting? Attach rca females to stereo male? I'm not sure which wire is which... should I do trial and error if I go ahead with it?

Update: I can short all 4 pins with a pair of scissors LOL still not quite sufficient. Searching around for anything else...

I wouldn't open them up too eagerly... I think there is a combination of shielding and different wires that need to be connected in specific ways... usually... a pair of scissors is good... would a pin work?

I'm sure soldering would work if you have a bunch of that to play with...

Place 2 into 8, cut the end off.Place 1 into 5, cut end off. They'll look like this:
Now twist them up, pair the colors and tape them together. Enjoy your crunchy tunes!

You can't insert males into other males... at least not with audio equipment lol... unless I'm misunderstanding you.

OKAY. So I am trying to splice together each rca (red/white) female with a stereo male. The stereo male has two wires so obviously red goes to one wire and white goes to the other. Within each wire is two smaller wires... do I connect the inner wire of the rca male to the inner wire of the stereo male, or do I criss-cross?

edit: figured it out... it is INSIDE to INSIDE and OUTSIDE to OUTSIDE as I suspected

edit 2: HALFWAY... I HAVE ONE

IMHO the easiest solution:

For mono sound

#1 -> #4 -> #3 <- #2

For stereo sound

#1 -> cut male off #5 and strip the two wires about an inch, then wrap respective wire around ps3 RCA white and red, cover with electrical tape
connect 1/8 male of #5 -> #3 <- #2

Ok so... I spliced them together and I GOT IT!

It was really freaking annoying but doable. The only problem is I have pretty much no decent tape so this is EXTREMELY fragile right now. Not sure what to do about it...

I used some leftover outer insulator as a rod to wrap the leftover strands around... which is sorta acting as a spacer at the same time. I'd rather not wrap everything up tight now that I think about it since showing what I did is actually interesting. I only need to use this thing once for like a couple of hours haha.
