I've tried 3 times. I've either gotten a file that won't play or a file that will play, but it's gray! It's beyond my expertise as I don't know much about conversion/codecs/formats, etc..
Does anyone have advice on the settings I should be using to convert? I don't want to lose quality and If I can I want to keep the resolution it's in.

I want to upload it to Youtube. I tried splitting the MKV to 6 parts and then uploading. However, when the videos would finish processing they would only be around 1 minute in length, even though they were all around 10 minutes.
After checking Google I found that this is mostly due to complications between Youtube not knowing how to handle MKV files, even though I previously upload a MKV files and they uploaded/processed just fine.
I also want to watch it on my tv using my Xbox, so there's another incentive also.

Try splitting it with MKVmerge.
That's the tool I used to split with. No go. Repackage as an MP4, how would I go doing that? Is it the same as converting or...?
Why don't you use some other converting software, if the current one doesn't work just use google to find more software, free or trial base should work no problem. (Just as long as the trial base doesn't watermark their conversions.)
If you move it to a avi file you'll have to re-encode and avc video stream should not be put into an .avi file. Although to be honest i've put plenty of vids on youtube using .mkv extensions i'm guessing there is something about the video that youtube dislikes.
use mkvextract.exe(it's a command line program if you don't know how to use it google mkvextract GUI and i'm sure you'll find something) found in the mkvtoolnix download and extract your video and audio streams. Then use w.e mp4 muxer there is i think there is one call mp4box

Just need one that accepts .h264 files and .ac3
I installed MKVExtract into my MKVtoolnix folder, however, when I click on Extract it shows a GUI with no text AT ALL.
All of my videos are x264 in MKV with AC3 or mp3 sound. The problems I ever get with them come from youtube's end, as it loves to randomly break stuff regardless of codec or container, but the majority of files are usually fine.
Have you tried using MeGUI for your encodes?
And sony vegas will not open these anyways so don't worry about it. Wish it could.

Tried this and it worked. File played fine on my computer, however now there's weird noises when it plays
What do you think the problem is?
When I split the movie into 6 files the files changed from MP4 to MV4, do you think that was the problem?
