Hello TL,

I have to go on a business trip to Nagoya in 2 weeks. The meetings start on Monday, but we arrive on Saturday afternoon already. Fly into Japan (Narita airport) @ 15.00, travel to Shin-Yokohama to drop of the bags at the hotel and be ready to go @ 18.00 the latest.

This means I have Saturday late afternoon (more like evening) and Sunday all day to visit the glorious city of Tokyo, as we don't travel through to Nagoya until Sunday evening.
We do have some local people guiding us, but they are all a good deal older than me and might not share the same interest. So I thought I'd ask the community:

"If you had only 1 day in Tokyo, what would you visit?"

I'd recommend you visit one temple that isn't too far out of the way and spend the rest of the time wandering around in the city and randomly going in shops and stuff.

But for dinner, find one of those sushi-conveyor belt restaurants. Those are awesome.

yeah, what are your interests? like i would have a lot of fun just walking around/shopping at harajuku, browsing 109 in shibuya etc... but it really depends on what you like to do! if you like sashimi/sushi, i would recommend going to tsukiji fish market versus one of the conveyor belt sushi restaurants:D

Well, I post on TL which is a dead give away on some fields. I'm an electronics engineer, like computer games and do read some main stream manga (Bleach, Naruto, ...) but nothing too fanatic.
So Akihabara would be a good place to visit

If I would have had more time, I would have LOVED to climb Mount Fuji. Now, as it is only a one day city trip, I would just like to get a feeling for the city. Every city has it's MUST SEE places and it's Ï-can't-believe-nobody-visits-this" places. That's pretty much what I'm looking for.

Sushi will be part of the trip, of course.

As we are spending 3 days in Nagoya, late night diner locations are also welcome

EDIT: On trips I'm a bit of an enigma. I like nature (loved the everglades for example, and going to Australia's Red Center next year). I like temples and history, but in small measures. Love electronics and games. So let's just say, anything goes. Just looking for some ideas

EDIT2: shibuya is that crazy crossing, right? Looks good As for food, I like meat more than fish, but "when in Rome", so anything local goes.

EDIT3: My smiley use makes me look like a 14 year old girl, what the hell? I should really try to get rid of that...

Mt. Fuji is definitely off the list, because you need to book weeks ahead of time, and you can only climb during the summer season (July and August).

I recommend going to the fish market (Tsukiji) because it's almost freakish to see so many tuna being auctioned off, live. You'll also have access to really good sushi just outside of the auction floor.

- Shibuya/Hachiko is a rather hip place for teenagers and young adults, it's great for people watching, and get a sense of what's in vogue in Japan this season (fashion-wise).
- Central Shinjuku is filled with high-rises and department stores; the metropolitan building may be worthy of a visit if the weather is good, as you can see Mt. Fuji atop the building.
- Akihabara is probably what most people on this board believe "Japan" is like.
- If you want to see something traditional, pay a visit to Asakusa, Sensouji (a temple) is really famous.
- If you want to see people in cosplay, visit Harajuku (between Shibuya and Shinjuku) on Sunday; after seeing the teens, continue along the path to see Meiji Shrine and Yoyogi park. Moving north from Harajuku is Omotesando, a really upscale shopping district (comparable to Ginza), keep on moving north, you'll end up in Aoyama, another upscale shopping district.
- IMO, Ginza is really nothing special, it's very similar to 5th Ave., and doesn't have a very "Japanese feel" to it.
- Take a stroll around Roppongi at night to get a sense of what the Japanese nightlife is like (I recommend going to Tsukiji after Roppongi as they are relatively close to each other).

Unfortunately, you can't just "get a feel of the city" in Tokyo within one day. Tokyo is divided into these "wards", and each ward has a very different feel. So pick what interests you and visit a couple.

Thanks for the advice. I knew it would be impossible to see even a part of Tokyo in a day. I'll have to spend an evening to check out all the suggestion and find some I really want to see I guess. Wikipedia to the rescue.

I wanted to take an additional week holiday to see some Japan, but this project is so time critical that's not possible... Guess I'll have to come back some day.

I don't think there's much you can really do in a day. IMO it's more fun to get lost and explore, especially if you only have a day. Pick a stop like Shinjuku or Shibuya and just walk around, go into random stores, etc.

Food-wise, Tsukiji should be on the list, but remember to get there early since there are gonna be long lines. Like 6AM early. The 3000-4000 yen sushi sets are comparable in quality to $100 sets here in SoCal. If your Japanese is passable you can use http://www.tabelog.com to search for good places to eat.

Akihabara might sound like a cool place to be but it's not too special unless you're a hardcore anime otaku... as in, you buy doujinshi, figures, models, all that stuff. I dunno about electronics either... I didn't see any gadgets that were really that special, except for the $1000 rice cookers with ceramic pots. They had samples of rice, and I really couldn't tell the difference anyway. I kept going because it was close to my hotel and because there was a 100 yen Beatmania IIDX spot...

More like 4 AM early (for the best shops) if you don't want to wait 2 hours.
