Wind?

After just watching the latest Family Guy episode I really gotta know this. I already wondered when this happened in a Simpsons episode long ago (don't remember what episode). So what happens in those two situations is that someone sais wind but pronounces it like (re)wind, someone else corrects them and they say that they've only read the word so far.

What's up with that? Is that word really that uncommon in the english language or is it just some running get only native speakers get? I just can't imagine that people never hear that word for their whole life.

Enlight me please!

I took it as just a random and decently spontaneous joke, you're really looking too deep into this imo

Also as a non-native speaker, I can assure you that I've learned (heard) the word 'wind' long before knowing how to pronounce 'rewind', and I'd guess this is the general reality for most people. Wind is actually much more common

its never mispronounced in real life, family guy just decided to steal a joke from the simpsons..

as a comedy writer I can guarantee that its just one of those cute ideas you have that are totally random that sound funny and ur sure no one has thought of. sometimes its prevalence in society, like when you walk on a sidewalk and count ur steps as you go, and its that thing that no one says aloud but everyone does.

this is not that case.
