You can't actually use them as hackeysacks, can you? I bet they're hard and heavy. They look great though, the pattern is beautiful.

Lately you've posted a lot of chain mailish stuff (I don't even know what it's called if you're not making mail out of it). How do you actually do it? Is it all physical? Like just crimping the ends of rings or something? Where do you get the rings? Are they expensive?

I've had friends who did this by buying huge spools of wire (aluminum/copper/galvanized steel) then wrapping them into tightly coiled springs with a drill attached to a wooden dowel that was the size they wanted the rings. Then they would take the springs and cut them with a wire cutter to get the rings. From there they bent them to make a closed ring (or one that had a small gap so it could be used to link).

This is pretty cool, I love the stuff you're sharing.

Holy shit that's way above and beyond. I had a friend who did it for a while, and he just bought pre-made rings. They were kind of expensive, but not terribly so... From what I've seen, it seems like most of the difficulty is in the planning of the patterns and such, and the actual process is just extremely time consuming!

It's like knitting or something, but for real men.

Yes. In fact, there are three ninjas in that picture.

You can perfectly well I imagine. They're not too heavy, the one that's mostly aluminum is quite light (which actually makes the three of them kinda weird to juggle with), and, from what I can tell, the shape behaves very similarly to an actual footbag.

About 3 hours a piece.

About 5cm in diameter

Yeah must say I've been busy. Making the TL logo kind of prompted me to look up/try to make stuff I hadn't before. This is one of them. We can still call it chainmail I suppose - anything that interlinks rings in some pattern is. I make all the rings myself, pretty much using this method:

Buying pre-made rings is ridiculously expensive - they do sell these to cater to beginners but I would especially not recommend it to them because you're gonna waste a lot of material when starting up.
How to interlink them depends on the type of weave. The most common weave (the one they used to wear and the one you see in films etc) is called European 4-1 (its origins are European and every ring goes through 4 others. Tutorial here.
