Hi Tlers with presumably good taste in music!

I was hoping you guys could help me develop a taste for music. I've never been a big music person. Sure I listened to some stuff, but I never really enjoyed music enough to just turn it on and sit around and listen to it.

Now why am I suddenly asking TL for help? I've come to realize over the past few years that music is very important for most people. It would be nice if not to be able to have something in common with others, then at least be musically literate to know what the hell people are talking about.

So if you choose to accept my charge:
How would you recommend going about this?
Should I start with certain genres?
Should I start with the classics?
Is there something I should read to get a general idea?

Aannnd while I'm asking, if you could recommend only 1 specific Pandora channel.... what would it be (rather is it)?

Thanks for your help ^__^

I'll listen and I'll keep you updated.

~~~ Possibly useful information~~
Bands that I've liked a fair bit: Bad Religion, Rage against the machine, Distillers, some A perfect Circle, some Tool, Kasabian, Muse, Nirvana and Cake.
Mainly focused on contemporary music.
As far as I can tell I think I like punk. Anyway once again ty.
pick stuff from a variety of genres and see if you could get into it. preferably pick songs that are very representative of their respective genres.
I recommend you first make last.fm and pandora accounts. Then go to http://lastpandora.com/, put all those bands into a single pandora station, listen for a while and actively thumbs up/down. You'll find some stuff via pandora right away and even more via last.fm's recommendation page after you build up a profile.
It's supposed to be automatic but actually you have to press this button.
So you want us to help you conform? Doesn't sound like you really care about music at all. If you did, you would take the time to figure this shit out yourself. Don't let other people tell you your interests, that is the most wack thing I have seen in a long time.
Not to sound obvious but check out:
-Porcupine Tree, Coldplay, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Dream Theater.
Also go with the classics, Genesis, The Who, The Doors, King Crimson, etc.
Ok, as a huge music head and envoy of electronic music (not techno...its not all untz untz!) I will help you.
I am doing this because I listen to a lot of music that most people do not even know about, but usually appreciate once I play it for them. I am going to upload a "sampler" of a wide variety of tracks I think are all good, there are many different styles and genres in here, and I hope you will find at least one or two that you really enjoy.
I will upload my "sampler" of 59 tracks to megaupload, but you have to promise to DL and listen to them...ok?
If you don't like any of them, ok.
If any of them seem interesting you can tell me and I can hook you up with lots of similar music.
Deal?
I know how you feel, I barely listened to music until about 4 years ago when I started to discover some stuff I really liked, If you have no exposure to music you will have to passion for it. Maybe I can help you in this regard, maybe not, but its worth a try.
Anyone else other than OP is welcome to try this out and get recommendations too.
This is a weird blog. People are just going to throw random bands that they like at you since you haven't specified any specific genre other than "music". I'd suggest doing the pandora/last.fm thing just to find more things that you like.
Prog rock is the best! Gentle Giant is great too, Alan Parsons Project, Yes, Opeth, anything by Frank Zappa, Supertramp, etc etc. These days I am loving Queens of the Stone Age. They aren't really proggy but they have a little something more then regular rock I find.
edit: Also I recently found this song and I want to show it to everyone because it is pretty sick. Robert Charlebois (french canadian artist) singing a song arranged by Frank Zappa, Frank also plays a solo at the end. Pretty random but owel lol, here she is !
edit2: I just saw the bands you listed that you enjoy, definetly check out Queens of the Stone Age
I've always found going back to the roots of the bands I'm enjoying is a nice way to discover more music. You like punk, so why not see what bands have influenced the bands you like? The Clash, Sex Pistols, Iggy and the Stooges, Misfits, Dead Kennedys, etc.
Other than that, don't push yourself into genres. Just find some music you enjoy, find something that grabs you straight away, then check out their other stuff and similar artists.
Ok, here is my Electronic Music Sampler.
Lots of artists, lots of genres, some aggressive stuff and some downtempo.
Take a try and get back to me if you like anything, I have a pretty big collection so I can probably find you some more artists you like.
Anyone is welcome to do this, not just OP.
Help me wise sage. I've recently been getting into glitch hop. Favorites are Nit Grit, s.p.e.c.t.r.e., and of course The Glitch Mob. I also love IDM with Evol Intent and The Flashbulb being my favorites in the genre.
Ok, Nit Grit and Spectre aren't really glitch-hop, more leaning into dubstep at that point.
As for glitch hop, make sure you pick up the solo material from EdiT (Certified Air Raid Material and Crying Over Pros Fro No Reason). Kraddy (old Glitch mob member) has some good solo stuff too (Android Porn). I would take a look at Eprom, and speaking of him ill.Gates has some cool stuff (Collateral Damage and his remix of Eprom's 64 Bytes). Also take a look at Mochipet hes real cool, got some heavy glitch. Krazy Baldhead is definitely worth a listen, I was happy when he got a Mob remix. As far a heavy as shit slower beats go with some hip-hop influences you sould also give Vibesquad a listen (Full Pound). For more hip-hop influenced and less glitchy electronic I recommend Pretty Lights (AMAZING), Little people (album: Mickey Mouse Operation), and Secret Frequency Crew (Day9 likes them)
As far as IDMish stuff, if you like The Flashbulb I would immediately go get some Jon Hopkins (pick up the album Insides). Kangding Ray is really excellent too (Automne Fold), I prefer less wild hats so my IDM stuff reflects that. I would also try out FaltyDL, try listening to Encompass. Amon Tobin is a fucking musical genius I recommend everyone try out, some more IDMish stuff pick up his album Foley Room (Out from Out Where, Permutation, and Supermodified are also amazing). For straight up great IDM, Lapse is awesome although super indie (http://www.myspace.com/lapsesound), some amazing stuff that will probably never be released.
I avoided dubstep recomendations in this, but I can do that too, this should give you some material for now lol.
Oh, bit of glitch bit of IDM crossover guy :Shipwr3k (http://shipwrek.bandcamp.com/album/journal), his album is up here for pick your price (free is an option).
If you cannot find any releases PM me and I can perhaps hook you up.
EDIT: Jesus christ Lapse finally got a release! Awesome, I've been following that guy since he started out on Newgrounds lol. Gotta pick that one up.
I was thinking the same about the Nit Grit and s.p.e.c.t.r.e., the stuff I like though usually isn't strictly glitch, dub, hip hop, etc.
Since you're really good at this and I haven't heard of most of the stuff you recommended could you do dubstep as well? My current obsession is Bassnectar. Which again, I wouldn't classify as strictly dubstep but I think it gives a pretty good idea.
Underground Communication and Cozza Frenzy (entire albums) by Bassnectar. Favorites by Nit Grit are Dimethyltryptamine and Invisible Monsters. Favorites by s.p.e.c.t.r.e. are VIP Bass and Bad Girls Go To Hell.
While we're at it, and on a completely unrelated note, I love DJ Krush and worship his Zen album.
EDIT: I'm not sure if it's been released yet, but Bassnectar has been playing a remix of Prince by Deftones on his recent tour. I had the privilege of listening live and it's off the chain. I didn't even think I liked The Deftones.
I appreciate all the help so far guys thanks so much.
Downloaded the massive music pack and I promise I'll listen to every song.
~~~
As to the people who thought the blog was a bit funny, or a bit pointless, I appreciate people recommending different bands to check out. I havn't listen to that much and there are so many different options. Getting pointed in a direction certainly helps.

Amon Tobin is a fucking musical genius I recommend everyone try out, some more IDMish stuff pick up his album Foley Room (Out from Out Where, Permutation, and Supermodified are also amazing). For straight up great IDM, Lapse is awesome although super indie (http://www.myspace.com/lapsesound), some amazing stuff that will probably never be released.

I avoided dubstep recomendations in this, but I can do that too, this should give you some material for now lol.

Oh, bit of glitch bit of IDM crossover guy :Shipwr3k (http://shipwrek.bandcamp.com/album/journal), his album is up here for pick your price (free is an option).

If you cannot find any releases PM me and I can perhaps hook you up.

EDIT: Jesus christ Lapse finally got a release! Awesome, I've been following that guy since he started out on Newgrounds lol. Gotta pick that one up.

I was thinking the same about the Nit Grit and s.p.e.c.t.r.e., the stuff I like though usually isn't strictly glitch, dub, hip hop, etc.

Since you're really good at this and I haven't heard of most of the stuff you recommended could you do dubstep as well? My current obsession is Bassnectar. Which again, I wouldn't classify as strictly dubstep but I think it gives a pretty good idea.

Would you mind mentioning a few tracks you like?

Underground Communication and Cozza Frenzy (entire albums) by Bassnectar. Favorites by Nit Grit are Dimethyltryptamine and Invisible Monsters. Favorites by s.p.e.c.t.r.e. are VIP Bass and Bad Girls Go To Hell.

While we're at it, and on a completely unrelated note, I love DJ Krush and worship his Zen album.

EDIT: I'm not sure if it's been released yet, but Bassnectar has been playing a remix of Prince by Deftones on his recent tour. I had the privilege of listening live and it's off the chain. I didn't even think I liked The Deftones.

OK, here are my recommendations

1. Akira Kiteshi: (http://soundcloud.com/akira-kiteshi/tracks) Just Rollin remix and Ming the Merciless are pretty sick. His remix of Afterglo is astoundingly good but not released yet.

2. Subvert: Not the hugest fan but I would at least try the track Bad Magic, his Cranberries remix of Zombies is very nice too.

3. Zed's Dead, mainly their remixes, awesome.

4. Skrillex: You'll have to wait for most of his dubstep to be released (unreleased orgasm) but you can get his remix of Scream and Shout.

5. Broken Note: Only if you want the hardest of the hard, watch out, but its amazing, the album Terminal Static is savage, especially the track Crux.

6. Statix: try Purgatory...I like that track.

7. Mimosa: Some more chill and hip-hop influenced, DEEP bass. Pick up the album Hostilis, track Lullabyte is supercool.

8. Nero: I like him but it annoys me that he repeats wobbles a touch, I have friends who jizz on every one of his tracks. This is his most well known track but also check out Night Thunder. He's got loads of stuff.

Some other artists to note:
- Shock One
- Flux Pavilion
- Excision and Datsik (more mainstream but Boom is still sick)
- Downlink
- Phaeleh (more downtempo but gorgeous)
-You could give Liquid Stranger a shot too

Oh, and THIS fucking song:

By the one of the same guys in Broken Note, not a huge fan of 16bit's other stuff but this song man....I LOVE IT.
In Hungry Hungry Hippos there are no such constraints—one can constantly attempt to collect marbles with one’s hippo, limited only by one’s hippo-levering capabilities.

You've been an enormous help. Thank you.

I would be curious if you're still feeling generous -- could I get your personal favorites as far as albums go? I listen to everything, so doesn't need to be genre specific.
