So I want to share a story, a really nice personal exciting one. It's a true story that happened this year that led up to this week. That's right, it's the story of my life!! (ver. internship)
Warning: It's pretty long to read so get like a coffee or something to prepare to read!
So as I mention in my months and months old blog, I got an internship at ABC news network for the fall semester that is coming up. So last Tuesday was my first day of my internship. I never had an internship actually so I was a bit nervous and excited at the same time since I'll be knowing and working everything what I hope I would be doing in the future. As a broadcast journalism major, my goal and desire to work in a top news media corporation and be the one who can contribute, distribute and present the news that millions of people would tune in for. And in a way, I finally got my chance with this internship as a start!
So I come in to the WABC building on Tuesday morning all excited to start a new chapter of my life. I got a bit lost in the building (since ABC owns an entire block but splits the building into 3 and I went to the wrong 2 out of 3) and had to keep asking guards and people where I had to go. Eventually, I made my way to the right building where an insane number of people were in a line waiting to be the audience of the famous "Regis and Kelly" morning show at Good Morning America WABC. I told the guards my situation and they told me I came to the right place but I came a little too early... since my internship starts at 9 AM and I came like 8:30 AM plus in a suit (first day impression), it was VERY awkward for me and hot. The people who are in charge of me didn't even come in yet so I had to wait in the lobby couch seeing these long line of people go into the studio and there it was. I SAW REGIS! I said hi and he said hi back to me and I was like "omg, I met a TV host that's on TV like every single day!" Apparently, he was busy and getting ready to start, so he had to go.
So 9 AM came, and the person who's in charge of me still didn't come but his co-worker came. So he took me into the newsroom office where he would assign and teach me stuff until the person whos in charge of me comes in. (For easy reference, I'll call him my supervisor though I don't think he is considered as such). So apparently, at 9:30ish AM, they have this morning meeting of all news staff to gather together in an area to discuss today's news and what to put for noon, 5 PM, 5:30 PM, and 6 PM news. I realize everyone is so new to me (obviously) and I stood out like a sore thumb. Nonetheless, I was invited to sit in for experience and there began to talk about topics to cover, reporters to assign, etc. The meeting was quite interesting, sorta like how I imagined it in a movie I saw once...
So I go back to my assignment area/department which is the 7online.com section. I still haven't had a clue what I would be doing for the rest of this internship until I was given my very first task. To update, assist, and manage the WABC news website in real time! So I was taught all sorts of things straight from day 1, like templates, editing videos using FCP and posting them online while news is going on, putting stories together, etc. It was a really cool and interesting learning experience.
But the best part has yet to come. I realized that I was given an area to work with and there's the computer and this small TV. Apparently, I can watch w/e I want while I can do my work which includes watching the Yankees game since apparently my supervisors are extremely cool and chill. So nice! And everyone I met from the people on other departments and the director and etc were all so nice too, welcoming me and giving me advice and all.
Then I wonder, if there's 3 buildings that's ABC, then what's inside the one I'm at (unexplored areas) and the other 2 buildings? So I asked for a tour and my supervisor was like "ok" and got a whole full tour of the news building! Score! So along the way, I met anchors, weatherman, 2 studios, all sorts of rooms and people, and the bathroom! It was like heaven to me...
So at the end of the day, I realized I can definitely live with this despite the fact that I'm a slave for ABC for the next couple of months with practically no pay, getting college credit WHICH I pay for, and using my own money to get there (1.5 hour trip) and for my own food. But it's all worth it...
So it was a long blog sharing my experience but I just felt like I had to blog it! I wanted to write more and about day 2 (today) but unfortunately, I don't think I have enough space for that for you guys to read. So instead, I'll make a part 2 or ask me any questions regarding my experience of this internship so far and I'll be happy to share for anyone who's interested in this thread!!! Thanks for reading!!~ ^_^
