note: If you post comments, don't post spoilers.

I'm currently half-way through seasons 2 of DS9. I used to think this show was all about social interactions, who likes who, and essentially the "bar in space" female Star Trek offering.

I was wrong. DS9 rocks. The continuity is particularly impressive, as each episode is somewhat connected to the rest. Voyager had that too, but to a lesser extent. Also I'm still in the weak part of the series. I've heard a lot about the Dominion War from people (no spoilers plz), and am looking forward to seeing whatever that is about.

Here's my character reactions so far:

Commander Sisko: Straight up baller. Love this guy. Love his quiet, controlling style, less temperamental than Picard or Janeway. Also has a great voice, and he's black so you know he can fight.

Major Kira: Sexy time! Actually a strong character in her own right, she's been getting better and better as her backstory as a rebel is filled in.

That worm girl: Most boring character I think, along with the doctor.

Doctor: Quite boring. I've watched all of Voyager so I suppose I'm spoiled, but this guy is flat. His character is completely undeveloped: I still have no idea about his history, what he likes, what he hates, his oddities, etc. He's just bland and gets along well enough with everyone while hitting on giant tape worm girl.

Odo: Cool concept, he's doing well as a character. Smart and logical with awkward emotions, he's the Data/Tuvok of the show.

Quark: Surprisingly good. Expected him to suck as the Ferengi are very annoying in TNG. His connivance makes him interesting but all the "Quark bar" episodes suck.

Going to keep watching now, hoping for some good stories. I enjoy the Bajoran episodes but have yet to see any of the time-travel/"everyone has no memory"/etc type of episodes where there is some strange sci-fi anomaly, which are my favorite. Hopefully they'll be out there.

People always look down on me when I say it...but DS9 is wayyy my favorite trek series....good overall story arc.
In Hungry Hungry Hippos there are no such constraints—one can constantly attempt to collect marbles with one’s hippo, limited only by one’s hippo-levering capabilities.

agreed. DS9 is awesome, my favourite trek by far.
the doctor will develop quite a lot. Quark and Sisko also get more and more awesome as the show progresses, so does the chief. last three seasons of the show are amazing. i think i might actually use some of my holidays to rewatch them, since its been a long time since i last saw them.

edit: oh how could i forget garak. the best episode of the show is centered around him.

He's been in like 2 episodes so far. Seriously, the guy doesn't come up. I feel like he's a partial throwaway character right now.

DS9 is awesome. And I always thought it really picked off after the first 2 seasons. So if you liked them I guess you'll love the rest!

The series gets much better after the first 2 seasons. If you already like it than you won't be disappointed.

I've watched a ton of these late at night because they used to come on after conan obrien but then we got stupid ass carson daly grrr

I was always pissed how Quark is constantly getting fucked over. Guy is a baller hustler but something always goes wrong.

You forgot about Obrien chief engineer as well. That guy is one of the better characters on the show. He was in TNG too.

Yea I mostly agree, I disliked most of the characters in the show.
Bashir, Jake sisko (pussy kid) , his friend nog (most pussiest kid ever), Dax, rom, kira, that main cardassian dude (gul dukat i think?).

DS9 is a pretty good series, although I think its characters are weaker/less interesting in general compared to TNG and even Voyager. My favorites were Garak, Quark, Odo and Gul Dukat. Bashir is probably the worst character in the series, not even as good as Beverly Crusher. And I know a lot of people like Sisko because of his deep voice and all, but I think he is a terrible actor. His speech has a staccato quality to it, like hes deliberately pausing before each word to make sure he over enunciates it. There were scenes where he got emotional and i would literally laugh at how he would be speaking, lol.

DS9 gets better the later you are in the series, so I suppose you're in for a treat.

Garak is the best character of the show by a mile XD. The last 2-3 seasons is where shit gets really really good though. I actually rewatched those seasons a month or 2 back. Good stuff .

Enjoy!<XD

Ds9 is such an incredible series, its by far the best star trek series in my book
If you liked the first 2 seasons you wont be dissapointed, because it just keeps gettin better and better, especially season 6 will rock your face off

Sadly i can't talk to much about the awesomeness of the show because it might spoil something for you, i just wanna say that you give the doctor another chance, he will get a lot better. i didnt like him at first as well, but he grew on me quite a bit.

DS9 has the most engaging storyline of the all the ST series imo. The storyline really picks up after the first couple of seasons. Once the Dominion War cycle begins, it feels like you are being told one epic story over 40 some episodes rather than the usual 'problem/monster of the week' format.

My own feeling is that the show peaked around season 3/4, the final seasons became somewhat stale with less original exposition of the themes. I consider the episodes Improbable Cause/The Die is Cast to be the finest episodes of the series.

Yes, until season 7 many of the best episodes featured Garak heavily.

DS9 is indeed a very good Trek series. If you like it you must most definitely check out Babylon 5.
Also set in a space station (the writer of Babylon 5 first pitched the idea to the makers of Star Trek but was rejected. They then set out to create DS9. Both shows eventually aired in the same years.) and the whole series is written as 1 story line. Almost written as a novel.

Just watched a really good episode, 2x14, where O'Brien has to deal with everyone mistrusting him and then trying to capture him. Really nice ending.

I am actually rewatching DS9 once again at the moment (3rd time I think?) and just started season 5. My favourite ST season by quite a bit, mostly because of the greater story arcs, it's not as over-idealistic and shows many flaws of the Federation.

I fully agree with the Garak love, definitely the best character of the series, ahead of Dukat/Odo/Quark. And yeah, he gets more screentime later on.
Memory Alpha is a pretty decent resource if you want to look anything up.

Babylon 5 as is a masterpiece, too. Starts off slowly in the first season, but season 2-4 are simply amazing. Season 5 is kind of weak in comparison, mostly because it was basically planned for 4 seasons if I remember correctly (and then the studio wanted a 5th?). If you are going to watch it I strongly recommend reading the lurker guide here while you do it, it as tons of interesting information. Just read the page for each episode after you watch it.

Ignore what all the other trekkies say. DS9 is head and shoulders the best star trek ever(Possibly because it's the most "unstartrek" like series in the first place). I used to be a diehard TNG fan but DS9 just blew me.

I'm not sure which season it's in, but there's an AWESOME time travel episode where they go back to the "Trouble With Tribbles" episode of TOS. It's my favorite episode of the series.

Less temperamental than Picard or Janeway?

Well sorry but that will change. Guy is a nut-job and the actor can't act. He's by far the most annoying Star Trek character in any of the 4 series (I'm just pretending Enterprise doesn't exist). Spends most of the next 4 seasons yelling in a staccato rhythm.

Anyway the series is pretty enjoyable, more so than Voyager for me, which had interesting ideas but wasted most of them in subpar episodes, but less than TNG which had more original story lines and better sci fi ideas generally (and also didn't have to steal all its ideas from Babylon 5's Michael Straczynski).

I love Bashir - along with Garak, the best characters in the series... He started out as an arrogant prick but as the show progressed it became clear that he uses his arrogance to cover up for his sensitivity and dedication, things that had burned him badly in the past. His bromance with O'Brien is hilarious, along with his interaction with Garak, the second totally awesome character of the series - embodying everything which is cool about Cardassians and the person with the most enjoyable quips.

Quark is rather awesome - my third favorite for sure. Cisco has some great moments and a great presence, and goes into #4. O'Brien and Odo, are pretty much meh-diocre.

This series made me hate Worf. I also hate Nog, Rom, Kira, and Jadzia Dax (who acts like a drunken frat girl with bouts of hysteria to match) which is thankfully replaced by Ezri in the last season (which is a shame, she seemed to pull of the combination of a young girl and an old soul very well but just hadn't had the time to develop). Dukat and Winn are annoying villains, not nearly as good as Weyoun or the Dominion (or Brunt, FCA).

I find DS9 far better than Voyager (I hate captain gestapo, first officer boredom, annoying bar-rodent and pilot yahoo) and Enterprise (can't stand captain incompetence, chief engineer redneck, translator hysteria and the youngest truck driver at the helm of a starship), even better than TOS (which had a stronger cast), and on par with TNG, which is the highest praise for a sci-fi show I can give.

edit:

I really liked DS9, and Voyager. They both had their unique charm. But yeah as someone else said, if you liked season 1 and 2 so much. The series only gets better. Once you get into The Dominion Wars you'll be swept off your feet. The last 6 episodes of the series were amazing. Along with many episodes scattered throughout the later seasons.

One of my more favourite episodes is Past Tense 1 & 2.

Also the multiple episodes where people travel too/from the alternate universe. I was always intrigued by that concept.

I think a lot of people didn't like DS9 because it didn't have the Borg in it. Yep I said it.

DS9 is a special Trek show, it's true. It really has it's own feel. You must update us on your impressions as you go through the serieses, because characters change and gather depth and lots of things happen.

Seriously people, read the OP before posting, some mayor spoilers there.

Anyway, DS9 is my favourite Star Trek series. It just feels so much more alive than Voyager or TNG. The recurring characters feel more like individuals than plot devices and most story arcs are pretty good too. I guess the guy playing Cisco isn't a great actor but you can get used to it.

Trials and Tribble-ations is the name of the episode. I agree it's one of the best of the series.

Yeah a clever tongue-in-cheek reference to the differences in makeup between then and now. I also remember that line with fondness. Classic Star Trek not taking itself too seriously.
