Hi Everyone. This is more or less a rant article on the popular youtube user raywilliamjohnson. I would like to see what the rest of TL thinks about him. Here is my personal opinion:
I believe that RWJ is one of the most unoriginal youtube users to ever gain mass popularity. Incase anyone is unaware, RWJ is the guy who takes viral videos created by other people, combines them into a roughly 4 minute weekly segment, and then adds his own personal commentary here and there.
First off the bat, I find his facial mannerisms rather annoying, but I assume those are his natural expressions, so that isn't a valid reason to dislike someone. Secondly, I find his commentary to be very minutely funny at all, especially in contrast with the videos. Once again, if I don't want to hear his dialogue then I don't need to listen to it, and I wouldn't bother writing about it. But that isn't the issue, so why am I writing this?
The simple answer is, take away the material in his videos which isn't his own, and what are you left with? A guy sitting in a room, making a few jokes, retelling events that occured to him which sound ficticiously similar to the ones in the viral video, and making a wide cornucopia of sarcastic expressions. In essence, are we being entertained by RWJ, or simply the videos?
There are countless people out there who have the natural ability to entertain others. Once a month I watch Day[9]'s BGH 2v2v2v2 video, because no matter how much I watch it, it always makes me laugh. I watch scooby1961 on youtube because this guy has provided a massive array of free info for the aspiring weightlifting enthusiast, and it's all original content that he has verified through years of personal experience.
The event which sparked this rant was as follows. A few days ago, I heard a friend of mine say: "Do you ever watch RWJ? He's so funny." Then I asked myself, do people really laugh at RWJ, or are they just laughing at the viral videos?
I completely agree. His vids are shit, but so are a lot of the top subscribed people like davedays, smosh, fred, all that shit is really REALLY unentertaining and boring tbh, but straight up RWJ is just one of those guys who does what everyone else did and somehow got big for it...pathetic
"The Archfiend was one of the best youtube partners that ever graced this site, he will be missed. Here is his epic video on RWJ's douchebaggery."
Thanks for sharing that. That is one of the biggest d*****bag moves I've seen in a while, and I live in a community which is run by a municipal oligarchy of moneyhording, tax evading, land grabbing nobodies who couldn't make it running for mp.
They are the most rage-inducing horrible videos on youtube. I can stand to watch some of the other "youtube celebrities" but the only one I actually like is Peter Chao.
Ray is like a giant demotivational poster. Most the the time, the picture itself is already funny/amusing, but people add the whole "poster" thing to try to make it more funny (Which ends up just making the picture shitter/ruined).
I liked his videos a few months back but the more I watch of him the more stale he gets. I've basically stopped watching him. Same with sxephil. That cut style gets really old and it sounds like they are trying too hard to be funny.

That is kind of my point though. Is RWJ funny or are the viral videos funny? I think one of the reasons that makes him enjoyable to watch for some is that people aren't laughing at RWJ, but rather with him. Most people find that watching funny videos with friends is more enjoyable than watching them alone, because it turns the act into a social activity, and later on you can make jokes or references to your friends about them. In essense, RWJ manages to subconciously fulfill this role in people's eyes. This is pure speculation though.
he's smart to using other people vid to make money. you're all mad because he is the first do this and now making easy money. i am jealous as well and hate him for it.
I used to subscribe to RWJ a while back but got sick of him after I too discoverd that it was only the vids in his videos that made him funny. I also hated the fact that he NEVER posted the source. Like he pulled the vids of youtube but: 1) didn't have the common descensy (spelling...) to give back to the guys who posted the vid 2) I didnt feel like going trough 4 minutes of video to find 1 funny 10 second clip that I just could've watched without having him say shit like "forum" for the rest of the video.
i wish his vids would just be the viral videos minus him. i watch them every week for the vids, but the jokes he makes are complete shit. plus he makes up these stupid ass sayings (memes? idk) like "two camels in a tiny car". wtf does that mean?! false and homosexual is another shitty one. then i see other people using that in youtube comments and i want to sack mr johnson.
i too hate how he doesn't post the sources to his videos

Yeah, i agree 100%. Although i remember one good joke he made some time ago. Like made that troll thing and said "shut the fuck up and keep talking" and he went like wait uh what himself? That was kind of funny but overall i feel his humor is quite weak and he is still overusing the same one liners, memes and stuff that is already beaten to death imo.
Also that particular video people are talking about made me feel sick and i left an angry comment and thumbed it down just like everyone, seriosly what the fuck was he thinking including that.
90% of my friends like him and spam me with countless videos of him being so funny and original in each and every one of those fucking videos he releases 2 times a week. How do I know that ? Because it's 2 fucking AM in Romania when his videos hit youtube and every fucking time my dorm mates wake me up to show me "how fucking awesome this new video is" even if I've told them countless times and I don't like the guy.
And don't even get me started on the "fake and gay" meme, Even if I did found it funny, that would have changed after hearing 3 other people yell "fake and gay" every 5 minutes for the most retarted of reasons ALL YEAR LONG.
why so much hate on him? I think he's good at what's he's doing, looking up funny videos and making puns about them. OFC lot of bad jokes, lots of redundant stuff but i'd like to see s1 who makes a more entertaining sum-up of viral videos twice a week. Or even just one 5 min video which could be compared to some of his better videos.
The guy puts effort in his videos, has self-irony and is a pretty good troll overall.
Also L-O-L on the sweaty SP-fan guy with annoying way of composing his sentences, who freaks out about an "official" troll being insensitive or screwing over the haters or anything.
The internet never stops to amaze me, as how some people make an ass out of themselvs just to have the satisfaction to "explain" thatn another guy, who they do not know is an asshole
It's just ridiculous, haters are 100 times worse than rabid-hardcore-mindless fans. If you're commited to sg you enjoy that's understandable but if you're committed to sg that u hate, well that's just pathetic. That loser from that video is the most annoying guy whose vid i ever saw
I don't think hes funny either. I do think he does a good job finding funny videos though. Really though its fucking amazing how much money he is rolling in doing this. I am pretty sure his videos get the most views on youtube by far. He has to be making at least $500,000/year.

Hmm, I always thought the amount of money you make from views on youtube is very miniscule, I remember watching Mrchicity's video explaining how much money he made from his video "Youtube Exposed" which has 800, 000 views, apparantly he only made like 34 dollars off it.
He also explained the only way you make money of youtube is if you sell merchandise such as t-shirts or if people buy rights to you're video.
Theres no doubt though that RWJ "Fake and Gay" t-shirt made alot of money.

I understand where you are coming from, but I really don't understand where people get this sense of RWJ having any sort of ownership over "his videos". As I said in the original post, if you removed the content in his videos which wasn't made by him, then there would be barely anything entertaining about what he does. He makes loads of viewers and profit directly off of a third party, and gains a ton of credit for being great entertainer, but is there really a single person out there who can say that they watch his videos strictly to hear his commentaries? What is so wrong about disliking someone who uses other people's material for his own gains?

I rad in an interview with sxephil a while back that he was making around $250,000/year. I am pretty sure RWJ gets a lot more views.
I do agree that he doesn't "deserve" all the views he gets and he might not be original but his videos keep you updated on the latest happenings of viral internet vids. At least thats why I watch them.
Personally i cant stand the guy, i think his videos are pointless and basically he just piggy backed on the others and that's why he has so many subscribers ... plus people are so fascinated by videos and stories he highlights that have no substance what ever.

he doesnt claim that the videos are his, he gives links to it in the description, and i think he's pretty entertaining, for an amateur. He made up many meemes of his own, such as "2-camel-in-a-tiny-car" being the ultimate argument. You see the video is funny, there are 2 camels in a small car, but it would have sunk quickly, and everybody would've forgotten about it. Thanks for that meeme it didnt die, and can be funny in different contexts. And ha makes fun out of himself on purpose many times. It's not illegal to use internet videos, and if he makes a show out of them, and even makes money on it, well congratulation, anybody can go and try it, many do, and fail horribly. At least he does not always fail, he has many good jokes.
