So I got a random email a couple days ago from my LT asking if i wanted to attend a 5 day class to get my A+ Certification. I'm like "holy fucking really?" And i jumped all over it. A+ Cert is just in general a great thing to have for resumes and stuff.

A day later I get another email from my SGT saying "Call me ASAP". So i'm like ok.. whats up? I give em my number to call me because i've been calling them with no answer.

So then they wake me up this morning at 8:30ish asking if i really want to go to it, my reaction after the phone call was.. "wtf..really" waste of a phone call.

Then I get another phone call again from the LT again asking, would you rather go to 2-6 instead of 9-13.. again waste of a phone call i have a LAN on the 1st no way am i going to let training get in the way of that.

So yeah I get to go get my A+ Cert anything I should brush up on or start learning?

What are you asking from us? Do you mean things in particular or just in general? It's probably your phraseology, but I get the feeling that you have no idea what A+ is about other than "it looks good on resumes", and you are completely unprepared.

i just love blogs with LT, A+, SGT, ASAP.

you should really cut down on some of those shortcuts. LT is lost temple and SGT is sergeant?

on topic, congrats :D

The A+ certification is obsolete. You'll see why when you take the test, but good luck either way.

network+
security+

A+ is a very basic certificate that's good to have if you want a job that's phone / tech support.

I hear A+ is pretty standard nothing very special - aka it will probably be very easy. I know most high school students are able to pass it without any problems.

This is cool. Do you have to be a Computer Science major to get this certificate? I wouldn't mind getting it.

The A+ certification is extremely outdated as others have mentioned, and the only business owners or hiring managers who take any interest in it are those who are unfamiliar with computing or just out of touch with more modern programs. I would say it doesn't hurt because it never hurts to have additional qualifications to your resume, but if you plan to work for a major computing business it's not really something you can fall back on anymore.

A+ is a good thing to get right now to add to your resume regardless of occupation because apparently compTIA is adding expiry dates to their certs next year. It's fairly easy but there is a lot of nuancey stuff to memorize about computer hardware.

Here are four example questions from a free practice test to give you a bit of an idea of what it's like:

A user reports that their laptop shuts off after around 20 minutes after turning it on and it gets unusually hot. The battery is full, the laptop is plugged in, and there are no error codes or beeps. Which component is most likely at fault?

A. Fan
B. CPU
C. Battery
D. RAM

A customer reports that their laptop keyboard does not work. Which of the following is the NEXT step in the troubleshooting process?

A. Update the keyboard drivers
B. Re-install the OS
C. Attach an external keyboard
D. Press ctrl + alt + delete on the keyboard

Which of the following is a reason why a technician would install a new Windows XP Pro installation with a FAT32 file structure?

A. To support dynamic disks
B. To allow RAID support
C. Support for file encryption
D. Legacy support for older systems

Which of the followiong is a benefit of using STP cable?

A. Increased RFI
B. Decreased ESD
C. Decreased EMI
D. Increased transfer rate

Answers: ACDC

If you "obtain" a program called Visual CertExam, there are some free practice tests you can download from http://www.examcollection.com/

A+ cert is SUPER, super easy. Super easy. Buy a book and study for 2 days and you'll be fine if you already have a decent knowledge base.

Network+ is a far more valuable certification - also more difficult - but worthwhile.

Wait, the wikipedia page says the test is based on XP and 2000...that really is pretty old. o-o"

The vast majority of business computers are still on XP. 2k is rare on desktops but still found somewhat often on severs.
It's supposed to be automatic but actually you have to press this button.

Yeah, I was referring mainly to the choice of still using 2000. I'm not a tech guru or anything, but I at least know that Vista and Windows 7 are still considered too unstable, etc.

Vista/7 is way more stable, secure, and easier to manage (from an IS admin pov) than XP/2K. Tech companies migrate a lot faster than business companies though

Just to echo what some people have already said, while A+ does look good on a resume its almost completely useless. The information is irrelevant and outdated (unless they updated it in the last 2 years). I work with someone who has an A+ certification (along with a ton of others) and he is without a doubt the most useless employee in my company.

aka, certs look good on a resume, but they don't prove anything. Actual knowledge is more valuable than a cert.

But isn't the point of a certificate to show that you have proof of experience/knowledge? I'm confused about all this.

A+ cert is pretty basic most ppl that operate a computer for more then 3 hours a day with a week to study could porb get a+ certification it's only good for very low end things. It's not very hard to get but it is a proof that you know atleast that much.

I'm studying for my A+ right now, looking for a career in I.T... I dont know much about computers asides from operating one so I figured it's a good start. Can anyone give feedback on it being a good starting point and if Network+ / CCNA certs would be a good follow-up afterwords?

sorry if i'm derailing your thread and asking advice but it seemed appropriate

Well good luck, but I doubt you will need it.

A+ cert is a good place to start, and not a bad thing to have certainly. It opens up the bottom of the building, which leads to many doors later

IMO this is how certs in IT work in a nutshell:

CompTIA certs will get you interviews for entry level and low level jobs

Microsoft certs will get you interviews for decent jobs
3+ years experience in something that isn't entry level will get you interviews for decent jobs

Cisco certs will get you interviews for good jobs
7+ years Experience will get you interviews for good jobs
