They told me to post this in a blog, so here you go guys:
"First off, I apologize if the topic title sounds kind of sketchy, but hear me out. I'll be going to some summer program thing at UPenn, and I don't know if I'll be able buy a copy of SC2 when I'm there. If not, I'll have to wait until the end of August to actually get my hands on it. O_O
So I was wondering if it were at all possible for me to pay my friend in advance, then get him to give me the code, enter it into my battle.net account or wtv, then just download the client and play without having a CD. What do you guys think? I mean, even if I have to torrent the SC2 client, I wouldn't feel bad since I AM paying for it. Do you think it'll work?
Thanks a lot!"

SC2 will probably work just like WoW, all you need is an account
|
Part of the beta test is ensuring player's ability to stably download and use the client, I'm sure this feature will be included with release.

Can't you download most blizzard games (if not all of them) if you have a key?
I don't see why this shouldn't work.
|
I imagine a lot of people will be playing without a cd. I don't even think you need to torrent it. Just enter the key on your blizz account and I think you'll be able to download the game.
|
Any updates on this?
I really don't want a digital copy, but I don't even have a cd drive T_T. Not on my laptop, at least.

If you add a retail key to a battle.net account, it gives you the option to download the client from their website. It is usually very fast, however it will be ~12gb. It works the same way with any other blizzard game, if it is added to your battle.net account then you can download it anywhere as long as you log in.
|
Is this confirmed? :O Thanks!
|
Confirmed by me lol. I bought the game at midnight last night, added it to my battle.net account and this is what is shows currently.
|
Aww perfect, thank you so much.
Now the only thing I have left to wonder is whether I can download the game first through battle.net before receiving my CE.
The website seems to go out of its way to say that it's for people who will buy "digital copies," but I'm still curious.
Still, thanks a bunch.

Oh, can I ask whether the cd key is in the case for the game? I don't want my friend digging through everything unnecessarily.
|
The cd key is on the case for the disk. I'm not sure if you can pre-download it then just log in, I don't see why not but you never know.
|
ah well, since the "pay time" is already here, you can't download without paying anymore.
|
Confirmed, worked without a problem. I downloaded the client yesterday, and today I just logged in to battle.net and added the hey to my account. Installed the game and logged right in!

Everyone, whether you did or did not buy the game, can theoretically have a 12gb copy of the game.
However, you're stuck at the main login screen if you don't have a username/ guest pass.
If you have the CD, it just installs the 12GB worth of game into your hard drive. Then you no longer need it.
This clear everything up?
