Autistic children lacks some of the intuition normal people are born with. Therefore they often have problems with for example their fine motor skills, identifying all non direct communication and understanding that other people are people with thoughts and such as themselves and not just
input->output machines.

They can live a quite normal life but it requires a lot more work to get it right than with most normal kids. Emotionally labile persons who behave irrationally are extremely hard to understand for autistic people and will just scare them away from people, you need to teach them the social world as if he was an alien visiting from another planet.

I have been looking everywhere and I couldn't find any direct answers for these few questions, so please anyone on TL who knows a bit about autism please help me!

Can Autism be helped to the point where a person can have a normal social life?

Can Autistic kids like my brother go to a normal school?

Basically all I'm looking for is assurance . Also can this be passed on to their kids?

DallasTx I also have high functional autism.. err I used to have anyway.

When I was about 18 years old I found out that I was different from all other people. After asking my parents it turned out that I was autistic. Now there is allot of bullshit about what autism is and is not.

Autism is NOT a medical condition nor a disorder, It is a syndrome. What it means is that it belongs on a spectrum based on behavior. For my case I had stoneface (problem expression emotion), Agnosia (senory overload and trouble recognicing faces), social awkwardness (nerd syndrome) I also had problem understanding other people siuation which made it very hard for people to connect to me. All this was related to behavior and expression and it was tied to my neurology (my brain and the way I perceive the world).

This only related to my Autism or my spectrum. Other people might have other traits at their spectrum. each person is unique. However this is just that, Behavior.

When it comes to understanding things at a logical level (the intellect) a person who only has autism function just as well as a "Normal" person.

NOTE allot of the autistic people you see in the sensation press or heard of does not only have autism, they also have other diagnoses in form of mental disorders like retardation or insanity. Just like a normal person can get mental disorders so can people with autism. BE weary of this when you read about autism. AUTISM only relates to behavior. If it says that they killed people or are insane it's just that they have something else besides autism.

Regarding the treatment of autism It is very treatable, in a way anyway. For me it was a question about improving a skillset that I was naturally bad at, namely social skillsets. In my case when i was around 19 a bunch of science people wanted to assign a assistant to me because they didin't think i would function in society. That's how bad it was. However I turned it around and I've now 10 years later been declared as "healthy mental state" with high than normal social skill and empathy towards other people. I have no problem socializing and understanding people. Nor do I find it hard in any way. I'm finishing my Masters in System Science where I've been working on my thesis for around 1 year now. I've also been a payed assistent on my university where I've helped by teaching and planning new courses that relates to system Science. This takes allot social wise and I'm coping just fine.

If the only thing your brother has is autism then I wouldn't worry about it. If he has something else, like ADD or ADHD etc it might be a little more problematic. Again I AM PURE autism. The only thing I had to work on was my behavior which basically only takes time. I have no actual medical condition.

my sister has autism and she's the greatest thing thats ever happened to me or my family.

its really difficult to deal with at younger ages until like 6 or 7 but it gets easier

how serious is the autism? more along the side of aspergers or what?

feel free to PM me whenever you like if you have questions ^_^ i'd love to help out a fellow big brother

EDIT: oh high functioning i see, so you're in the exact same boat as me! yeh pretty soon you'll learn how to communicate with your brother.

like my sister uses phrases from TV shows and movies when a character is displaying a certain emotion. like in Shrek when shrek is angry, he says "OGRES ARE LIKE ONIONS" at a certain part. so whenever my sister gets pissed she says "ogres are like onions!!!" and if confuses the hell out of anyone else but my family, cuz we just get it

Hey guys.... how do I know if I have or "had" autism?? Reading this thread and looking up some info on wikipedia of everything related to autism is creeping me out but now that I think about it, I sorta can relate to my whole life so far.... for example:

My parents mentioned to me before and I think I remember from my memory as well that I didn't really talk or had speech language skills until I was 5 (which was when I came to US). Before then, I don't think nor recall any memories of myself actually talking, saying words or anything and I have a good past memory that I can remember of my time when I was 3 or 4 which was when I was in Korea (since I was born there). Then according to my memory, I remember saying my first words in English on the first day in US, but don't remember anytime before speaking in any language, especially Korean...

The next thing I realized is that I didn't really became active and talk to many people, I was one of those quiet folks throughout elementary and even middle (though I can safely say I'm not like this anymore) where I'll have 1 or 2 friends. I would frequently be quiet and do w/e I want to do. (ie. playing games like Pokemon by myself for like a 12 hours straight) My parents + relatives did mention that I was also very quiet when I was like 3-4 in which I can sorta relate and remember.

Hmm... another thing I recall was I was super OD with few things at different parts of my life. The most common one was during High School, I was super OD of unable to sleep in my own bed unless I took a shower. I would never sleep on my bed unless I clean myself and since I was lazy many times, I would often sleep on the floor of my room instead of the bed because I didn't take a shower before I went to bed... Now that I recall this, I laugh and all but after reading a whole article, research, and etc on autism, it bugs me...

I also can recall in relate to this topic is that I am (still is) a very very selective eater which apparently has some parts of autism... I would NOT eat seafood whatsoever (though there were times where i forced myself to eat and this was only recent to mingle in social events), would NOT eat anything related to sweets (chocolate, candy, etc but I do eat and enjoy sweets now ^_^), and just am picky with this and that type of food.

Also I know stacking is a big thing in autism.... I just loved to stack random things during my freshman year in college (I don't really remember of doing this in my memory though I know I've done it some part of my life) where I would just stack water bottles on top of each other just for the heck of it. I mean I was an engineering major and I was thinking of like stacking on top of each other to see how high it would go. But I stopped doing that b/c I realize how stupid I was during my 2nd year.

Finally, in the case that I feel many of us just plainly have it and doesn't relate to it (though it did state it could be part of autism) is extreme physical laziness. Like I would thought out and make plans of any given situations, imagining of how to execute and do this plan but I end up always failing to do the plan. My body wouldn't let me do some of the stuff I want to do b/c I suppose I'm just down right lazy? This includes especially to assignments, plans for meet up and etc in which would benefit me but I just wouldn't go for it sometimes despite thinking about it for hours of how to do it....

I have several other examples that I can tell and possibly relate to the topic of autism but they're just kinda pointless. They're interesting and also somewhat embarrassing stories or situations I've dealt with but perhaps in future blogs if my fellow TL readers would be interested in me...

Now, back to my main topic. My parents never told me about autism (and I sorta have a doubt they even know what it means) nor has anyone. I never had to attend special schools or anything since I went all public from elementary to high school, lived a normal life (well not normal if you read what I just wrote), and is in college perfectly "fine". But I never really knew about what autism means or who it effects until I just did some brief research on wiki... hmm... so are these enough proof that I have autism or am I just weird?

Also, while on topic, are there any celebrities in US who has autism and are successful? Since my field is Broadcast Journalism and I am planning to take on the road of media world so will my chances to be a famous broadcaster in both TV and radio will be affect by this??

Posted my entire story in a separate blog since it's personal and LONG but I spoiled it in case anyone wants to read it... I would like some feedback on this on my blog or here if I do or don't have autism... because gosh, I never knew what autism really was nor thought about it hard until now...

I am very saddened that my 3 about to be 4 year old brother has autism. The people told us he has "high-functioning autism." I really want to cry, all I want to see is him having a normal life, going to normal schools.

Before, he would never talk, say a word or anything since maybe 1-2 years old. At 3 he started saying a bit more complex words and now he is actually replying to what we ask him a bit, finally started pooing in the toilet, and even asking a bit of questions himself.

I have no actual medical condition.

please get the fuck out you absolute moron. you couldnt be more wrong about everything you're saying.

you do not "find out" you have autism. it is a DISORDER from the very beginning and it affects physical aspects as well as behavioral.

just shut up. i cant believe you posted that garbage.

you dont treat autism. you deal with it. dear god you are so wrong, did you urbandictionary this shit or something?

This is what I mean, so many people have no idea what they are talking about.

as if i havent lived with an autisitic sister, played with the other kids in her class that are autistic, talked to doctors about her autism, read research on autism, etc, for 13 years.

you're right. you know way more than me. please continue to spew your bullshit.

We are talking about the same thing, right as in high functioning autism?

ur cute. i'm done with this.

stop trying to help someone who is going through something incredibly serious by telling them lies and personal opinions.

Do not worry too much about this (it seems you've already calmed down a lot as your posts progress.. good!). As mentioned, it is not a terrible disease or something that that takes away (all) happiness in life. It is however a big thing for him and his environment and it will require some special attention from everyone-- himself, family, school and perhaps professionals such as psychologists.

Autism however varies alot across and within the different spectrums. High functioning autism however sounds like a 'good thing'-- good in the sense that it could be a lot 'worse'; good in the sense that he does not have intellectual problems to go along with it. Because the combination of social problems AND intellectual problems is is worrysome.

His future should be alright if he develops somewhat normally. Social problems are to be expected, but really, if his IQ is normal and he has a good, safe and well-structured environment, he can do a lot if not all of the things us normal people do.

Regarding your question on school, it kind of depends where you live and how he develops. I know that schools in a lot of countries try to get these kids in normal schools even if it develops more serious. Hell, here that's even done for kids with an intellectual deficiency.

It is however really hard to say how he will develop, especially at such a young age. Predicting development really becomes much more reliable once he ages a bit. Reading however that he already starts communicating and learning, it should be alright

you dont treat autism. you deal with it. dear god you are so wrong, did you urbandictionary this shit or something?

You can however 'treat symptoms', teach the individual and try to reduce the effect of autism. Even more the case if it's a form with intellectual deficiency, but that's not the case here.

Anyway.. good luck It should be fine.

Also, a practical tip just in case you haven't heard it by now: make sure you, and most of all your parents, read up on this. The internet is full of practical tips on how to make the environment and interaction more structured for him, stimulating his development and creating a safe environment.
