Hey guys! So I finally decide to make a blog to ask any video editors out there in TL for help. At the same time, I will show you what exactly is an epic video intro creation as well as have this blog be used to post your epic video intro findings as well as your own (if you think you have an epic video intro).

After weeks of searching, wondering, and questioning, I found that music I wanted that I saw during PL commercials but when I saw the original video with it, I was like "OMG, I WANNA MAKE A VIDEO LIKE THAT FOR MY EPIC VIDEO INTRO!" So thus, after looking at a very fine example of these styles/format that people have copied after the original in the video intro creation besides the music, I was wondering "HOW THE HELL DO YOU MAKE THIS?" Unfortunately, I'm still a noob at Final Cut Pro and Sony Vegas but still learning on its way. So my question is can anyone tell me, find a way, show me, give me an answer of what style/format are these videos using so that I can make one myself like this and call it an epic video intro. (btw, I tried googling for 2 hours or so to figure out this style and haven't found any results... T_T) A tutorial would be nice too if one can make one but I'm asking too much.... So without further ado, here ya go:

The original opening from Korean drama "New Heart"
+ Show Spoiler +

Fan-made opening of Korean drama "Boys before Flowers"
+ Show Spoiler +

Fan-made tribute to Bi-dam from Korean drama "Queen Seon Deok"
+ Show Spoiler +

Finally... sAviOr's version! o.O
+ Show Spoiler +

So, what's the most epic video intro you ever seen or created?

try some different transitions, it will look alot better

Well I would like to experiment and try to figure out using my softwares but unfortunately, I don't have a single clue how to make videos like this. Maybe you thought I knew how to make them but I WANT this transition.

Ah, interesting. Could you be able to show me how to replicate that transition?? I REALLY want to know how to make this transition myself as well! I have sony vegas as well!

I don't know how I can show it.. but I can try to explain how to do it. If I'm not lazy, I'll make my video tonight then I'll write a how to do it?Lol though you shouldn't expect too much, I'm horrible at explanation especially this. I'm not pro at sony vegas but I can replicate the transition using my own ways. My explanation will probably be like click on that circle thing click on it and on that square and yeah.... I don't know the terms that's needed for a GOOD explanation but i'll try..

That would be great if you can even write down the directions. I can try to experiment around your directions but since I'm an extreme noob at sony vegas (since I have yet to create a video in that program) and is a little bit tiny more familiar with final cut (don't have program at home, just used it at school to make a video before), this could be a great chance to know how to use sony vegas as well since I have it installed on my laptop. So let me know if you can! I mean that's fine if you can tell me where to go to, where to click, and etc. I'd say just go for it! And good luck! Thanks!

Which version of sony vegas you have? I have sony vegas 8.0 pro. I think on the older version the view/setting is different.. So.. I hope you have the same version or.. the direction i say might be off.. Also.. I want to know how much you know so I know how detail my explanation need to be.. Lol. So I'll ask you some questions.. Do you know how to do event pan/crop?( Lol I didn't even know that's what you called it. I had to open sony vegas go to that place to know the name "event pan/crop" as of now.. see I fails). And you know how to import videos? Drag them to the timeline then cut them if necessary? and add multiple video track? And do you know how to add effect to video clips? Just how noob are you at sony vegas :D O btw.. do you know where I can get that background music on those videos?

Hmm.... I have a newer version which is sony vegas pro 9.0... so now this might be weird b/c you said older version but i have newer... lol.. (Also, I got this for free and I know a way to get it for free so if you're interested, PM me about it.)

Hmm... I'd be honest with those questions. I only have the program, never really play around with it YET. I've played around with Final Cut Pro and made myself a news reel video once and that took weeks. But for Sony Vegas Pro... unless it's similar to Final Cut, let's just say... I'm LIKE A TOTAL COMPLETE NEWCOMER into the software as if I just got it.

As for the background music on that... it's an OST from the Korean drama "New Heart" as that's where it origins from. I don't have the OST and I'm trying to find it myself atm. Haha.

After Effects is really your best bet for bringing particular effects in mind to life. There are many AE tutorials out there that show you some cool stuff. I plan on learning it myself this summer.

For editing I use FCP, which has worked well for me so far.

Nice vids though. If I think of any I really liked in particular I'll edit this post.

At first I was like OMG how different would it be 8.0 and 9.0 but I figure out the solution.. I CAN just screen shot of what I am doing and add little note to it using paint then you can like look for the button that looks like the one I screen shoted and yay? Lol It shouldn't be TOO different 8.0 and 9.0 but yeah. Yeah the explanation shouldn't be too hard now since I can now just screen shot what I'm doing. The way I'm replicating the effect is quite tedious(I had just try to do some of it) but it get the job done.!

Oh nice nice! If that's possible to show me and give me an explanation, I would be more than glad! Thank you so much, ISighZ! I gotta think of a way to repay ya if everything goes well!

And once summer is around the corner (not yet for me), I think I should really take time to spend and learn about editing.......... nah, I'll probably do something else and procrastinate.. lol

Keep in mind that many are made by numerous paid professionals thrown in a room.
Also remember that those video's are melodramatic and therefore, the scenes are most epic.
Just throw in a TON of pictures/clips with as many different transitions/effects (not obnoxious) so that people will need to watch it many times to see everything.

Are all those made by the same person?
People are imbeciles, lucky thing god made cats.

No, not all of those are made by same person. The first one is an actual Korean drama opening song and credits. The ones afterwards are all fan made by different fan groups in each one of them... which is why some of these people KNOW how to make this style/format of video.... I'm guessing Koreans since they ALL relate to Korea in a sense... so they have a hidden "mason" league in Korea to do this is my guess...

That stuff is really cool. I've always wanted to get good at those. I only played around with those slideshow makers. Not the horrible ones like the free microsoft one. But they were only so cool compared to videos like the ones shown above. I hear most people use the sony vegas pro.

Okay.. I just finish mine.. And I spent like 30 minute writing an explanation then I reread it.. and it's very messy..So I think I found a better solution. Anyway I think you know how to import video/image/music file into vegas and also how to put them in the timeline and adjust how long the image/video should be in the timeline. The three main things you need to know is Pan/event/Crop, Keyframe usage and the Cookie Cutter effect. To learn those three things, I suggest you watch youtube tutorial on them. Also you need a lot of video track but that's easy you can just right click the timeline and select add video track. Let me know if you have any questions.. I think I can explain better if you ask like how to recreate the effect from 0:10-0:12 things like that.
Have Fun! I'll post a link of my ending product in a bit. I want to fix it up a bit before upload to youtube!

omfg now that I think about it, you are right. alot of korean dramas use this style of opening lol...
the songs are either similar or the same as well

Yea, which is why I sometimes get hooked on Korean dramas just because of those epic openings... I mean the storyline is all similar with someone getting cancer, love 3-4 way triangles, messing other relationships, etc but these types of opening just gets me going! Lol

Definitely, I want to learn how to make videos like this and more! Perhaps we should have a joint TL video editing workshops, seminars, sessions via vent, IRC, livestream, threads, something...

Can't wait! Show me your final product and tell me how you were able to do it! Curious to see how others can make videos and all. And I like pikachus! :D

Yea, which is why I made this thread, to hopefully see what others feedback and opinions are in regards to these type of intros. Like I mentioned, we should form a group of video editing learners in TL and have sessions/workshops/etc! And sony vegas pro is free to get if you know the directions to do so and it's pretty good which is why a lot of people have it. In the real world though in the media field, it's like 70% final cut pro....

Oh hey! I just watched your video and it's pretty good! I'm impressed you were able to make that similar style on your first try like that! Now, I know about youtube tutorial videos but I tried searching and watching so many that I don't even know which are the right ones to watch. Some of them are utter crap and unless you have specific ones you know of, I refuse to search thru weeks finding videos again...

But a written explanation would be nice though. I mean I don't care if it's messy, but for anyone who just started out video editing (like me), I think some sort of directions of step by step or something of sort would be nice. I mean even if it doesn't get to have the user understand what the heck he's doing, as long as it gives the direction to complete the task, the user can always go back and learn as he goes along or look back and see what he did. That's just my opinion.. but thanks...

Okay then! Before you start, the setting for the project is important, like if you start your video with standard tv.aspect ratio make sure all your clip are set to that setting or if it's widescreen. I used wide screen so on the project video properties, I used these setting. http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/4838/22785793.jpg

Not sure if you know these but if you do, I don't want to explain it. Do you know how to import video/image/music files into vegas and drag them into the timeline to use it? I'll start with some stuff you need to know. Say you drag a 5 minute video but you only want the part from 3:50-4:00. You can manually go to 3:50 of that video then press "S". S will cut that video apart, then you can press delete of the part you don't want to use. Now you have 10 sec but in order to sync it better to the music, you want it to last to 12 sec. And maybe if you expand(Do you know how to expand video, make it longer?) that video clip to 12 sec, you will see something you don't want like a extra person or in that last 2 sec or there's nothing to see. You can just go back to the 10 sec and hold "Ctrl" then expand the clip to 12 sec. It slows the 10 sec video clip so it lasts 12 sec on the same clip. It's slow motion. of course if you hold "Ctrl" and shorten instead of expand the video clip. 10 Sec clip Hold ctrl to shorten it to 5 sec clip. that 10 sec will be shown in a spam of 5 sec. That's speeding up aka fast motion.

I'll explain Pan/Event/Crop, Keyframe and Cookie Cutter then I'll show you how to do a certain effect. For Pan/Event/Crop, after you drag your video/image,Click on the pan/event/crop, I pin pointed it on the image. Then you'll see a new window come out. Make sure you set the preset to
16 Widescreen or the setting you start with at the project properties. http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/4028/80999196.jpg After that click on the open white space with the dots, and scroll your mouse up and down, you'll see the image shrinking or expanding on that window depending on you scroll it up or down. Anyway you'll see a giant F in blue, that's the stuff you see in the preview. whatever that is shown on that giant F is the stuff shown on the preview screen. Go to the corner of the image being shown and stretch it. Play around with it. Look at the preview screen as you play around to see the effects.http://img39.imageshack.us/i/80838555.jpg/ Now the image is only in the middle, but you can positional it to be on the top right, left or bottom. Just click on the Giant F and hold onto that click and move your mouse around. Now you can put the image anywhere you want. I think that's it for event pan crop.
Keyframe- Keyframe is that diamond look alike thing. You can add as many keyframe as you want by click on the keyframe timeline then move the image on the Giant F then a keyframe will be added. http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/4373/80529183.jpg Keyframe is like your first key frame is your starting point and the 2nd keyframe will be the place you want the image to end up. Okay so you now have the 1st keyframe your image position on top right, then click on the keyframe timeline then move the image to bottom left. Now you added a 2nd keyframe but the image is at bottom left. Now play the video and see the effect. Make sure you move that 2nd keyframe a bit away from 1st one, so you can see the effect. http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/6425/63427797.jpg Try to play around with that. You can put the 2nd keyframe in mid then add a 3rd keyframe farther from 2nd keyframe and move the image to a different place. a 4th keyframe etc. PLAY AROUND with all the things I had say. I gotta go i'll come back to add other stuff. if you read it.. let me know if this description is any good.. and if you have any questions. It's probably a lot to grasp!

Okay for cookie cutter. That effect is under video fx tab. There are some preset setting that you can use, but I usually click on the reset to none and drag it onto the video to set my own setting. When you drag it to the video clip. On the preview screen, you probably see no change. On the pop up window with the cookie cutter effect, go change the size, then you'll notice the change. To recreate most of the effect, you probably want to change the shape to square. After you move the size down a bit, you'll see that the image is only in the middle. To change that go to the space that's on the left of the Size, you'll see a rectangle with white space and in the center there's this thing. You can click on that and move around it. Play with that a bit. To go back to the effect if you accidently except out that cookie cutter effect just click the green cross. It wasn't green before but it's green after you put an effect on it. http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/2549/57392369.jpg .
When you move that thing to the left, the preview will show the clip on the left but the image will probably be different now, like it's not the image you had wanted to show. http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/3473/44521123.jpg. To make it show what you wanted to show, go back to the event/pan/crop of the video and move the Giant F, you should note the change. http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/1179/60151309.jpg.
Notice that the cookie cutter effect also have keyframe stuff you can play with. Play around with it. Like on the 1st keyframe the size can be 0 then on the last keyframe make the size full size. Or 1st keyframe size full and last 0. 1st keyframe with 1 split then 2nd keyframe 2 split, stuff like that play around with it.
If you gain the basic understanding of the three, the rest is easy.
Remember to do this, you need multiple layers of video tracks.
To make something like this, http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/8080/52686496.jpg
First, you need one video to be on the left, you can easily do that using cookie cutter. Then add 3 more video tracks(just right click and add video track on your regular timeline). Then you can use Event/Pan/Crop on those video to shrink those videos to fit the screen where ever you want. To make the video move left or right up or down just use the keyframe effect. 1st keyframe stay where they are then on 2nd keyframe move the giant F up or down. I think that's it..
To make your video more flashy. add transitions that's under transition tab and put them to your video. To make it sync to the audio, just make sure your video end at the part of the audio you wanted to end. I THINK that's all... Let me know if there's something you are confuse or any questions.! Have fun
O btw.. let you know if you want to know the settings I used to render my videos. It's HD quality.

Mad mad mad props to you ISighZ, I haven't really gone thru going into your directions yet but I will once I finish my finals this week. Then I'll have the entire month of June to work on this and perhaps I'll learn a lot after playing around with it as well. But really, mad props! I'll get back to this to show what I came up with in the future with an another blog but wow.... another reason why TL is fucking awesome!
