Everyone has obsessive compulsive impulses towards various things in life. One of mine is an obsession with action symmetry. Parallels for this tendency can be drawn to strong foundations like the fact that body symmetry is a good indicator of overall health/fitness, and in physical appeal ie. bodybuilding. I make conscious effort to balance all my daily activities to preserve symmetry as best as possible. When I first started driving, I was even troubled that my left leg was seeing much less activity than my right.

Here are some examples:
- Clasping hands (interlocking fingers) in both positions
- Crossing arms with switched arms
- Sitting cross legged on the floor with switched legs
- Washing my face in the other direction (clockwise motion)
- Drying off hair with towel in other direction (clockwise)
- Occasionally, eating with left hand (protip: if you are having trouble with a spoon, try inserting in straight into your mouth, not sideways)

Challenges I have been unable to overcome:
- Writing with left hand (totally different because of the resistance of pushing motion, versus pulling when writing from left to right. Lefties writing should be naturally right to left)
- Brushing teeth (this one seems to be semi achievable but I don't dare to try it)

I am not ambidextrous, but I try to train my left hand to improve its coordination. It also trains the other hemisphere of the brain. Sometimes it's fun to challenge yourself and work out what's wrong; an important strategy is to mirror the dominant position.

Try some yourself. Any other habits that you switch around?

I've actually tried to improve using the left side of my body for things over the past couple months. Just by being busy, I haven't been able to practice regularly, but I do see improvements.

I do write with my left hand whenever I see the opportunity; ie. an assignment that isn't heavily graded or a multiple choice test. I also brush my teeth with my left hand at times, and I eat with my utensils in my left hand whenever I remember to.

I plan to casually improve my left hand for the next few years, maybe even longer, until I feel that my right and left side are at a satisfactory level of equality. I highly recommend everyone to try these things out.

In high school I had days where I would try to do everything with my left arm. It's so counterintuitive though, and I don't think it helped me become more ambidextrous in the long run since I only tried a handful of times.

I think athletes (soccer players, basketball, hockey.. etc) require some ambidextrous skills. Soccer players need to be able to kick with both feet so they can take advantage of a good angle when they're taking a penalty kick or just trying to score.

When I swim, I try to make my left side do just as much work as the right, so I maintain a good rhythm. This is very important since rhythm affects how you breathe, and even how fast you go. I don't do 3 flutter kicks (or whatever) each cycle because it throws me off balance. I have to work on trying to breathe on both sides though. I think this would make me more balanced, and therefore a better swimmer.

In addition when I play starcraft or type, my left hand gets a lot of action. I don't switch that around, but I'm sure it helps with being ambidextrous.
I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

Gotta have a mouse hand, duh.
I've tried doing things with my left hand, and I'm absolutely rubbish at it. And I can't be bothered to practice, but I'm sure its doable, I mean I catch much better with my left hand from baseball and I shoot left in hockey.

When I shoot a rifle, I alternate my trigger hand and the side on which the rifle is on for symmetry.

I'm right-handed and can't write with the left hand for crap, but I always brush my teeth and eat (fork) with the left hand.
I hate the post below mine because it feels War3-ish.

I tried writing with my left hand for a while in high school but it was too much effort to adjust. I always train my left foot as well as my right in football/soccer. I drive with my left hand (when not using both) and brush my teeth with my left hand too. I'm not ambidextrous but it just feels natural to use the left hand for a lot of things.

Oh yeah for swimming I learned pretty much right from the start to alternate breathing right side/left side for front crawl.
