A question for English teachers in Korea

I've been applying to recruiters because I plan on going to Korea to teach English after I graduate. I just had a phone interview with a recruiter from ESLPark. She said that now, because of incidents with foreigners, it's possible to have your visa denied if you have speeding tickets on your record, and that if your visa gets denied once you can't ever apply for it again.

Then she went on to say that she would send me information about some guy I can go through so that I wouldn't have to worry about the speeding tickets. But that it would cost me around 70 dollars more than getting it on my own.

Obviously this sounds sketchy as hell to me. I was wondering if any of you teaching in Korea have ever heard of the possibility of being denied your visa because of speeding tickets. Also, if you would recommend me recruiters, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Sorry I cant help you at all, but why would you get a speeding ticket if you are a foreigner in Korea?

Korea has one of the best transit systems. Driving in Korea is stupid.

edit: Unless you are talking about speeding tickets in the US, then that would make a bit more sense.

@OP: I do not know but I cannot believe that would be a reason to deny you. It has NOTHING to do with the profession or process of getting the qualification to go to korea and teach a language. Shit like that doesn't even matter in some really professional jobs. They will, however, fuck you over little by little later on based on insurance :D

Yes I have one speeding ticket on my record, that is the reason I am asking. I feel like they are trying to make an extra 70 dollars off of me.

Edit: It seems people are confused. I am not living in Korea now. I got a speeding ticket last year. My recruiter said that having it on my record can get my visa denied. I'm wondering if its true, or if they are just trying to make an extra buck off of me.

come to beijing. better place, less hours, more freedom. i can get you a job for around 25 hours week/$1000 a month plus free apartment. year contract. unfortunetly, the principal only wants whites so if you are interested (and are white) can prolly get you a job in a jiffy.

Honestly I would really like to, but you can save more money in Korea, and I gotta pay off loans.

what you mean you can save more money? you mean you can make more money? what does location have to do with saving money? also, there are no silly laws here to conflict with your earning money and/or wonton partying.
no one saves more than chinese... lol

It is completely and utterly dodgy. Do not trust them. Speaking as an English teacher here they can deny you for any offence on your record. It might depend upon the whim of the visa staff who deal with your application. So really your best bet is to apply through another recruiter since this one sounds shady as hell and then just hope for the best.

I recommend asking lilsusie about this since she is more familiar with the current laws than myself and will be able to tell you about the specific conditions for denial (hopefully.)

Honestly, there is a little known secret for white people who can speak English.

Step 1: Buy a ticket to Shanghai/Beijing
Step 2: Talk to a random university student who likely speaks English (because there are more English speakers in China than there are English speakers in America) and see if they know where the foreign bars are
Step 3: Find other foreigners and ask them where they teach English (Because they do). They will get you a job because there is a HUGE demand for white people who can speak English.
Step 4: Rent a cheapass apartment and enjoy your new life.

Honestly, this will work for ANYONE who is fluent in English and is white. And yes you have to be white. A few years ago my grandfather's friend got me to recruit people to teach English in China, and the first thing he told me was 'Only white people.'

lol thats VERY VERY sketchy. dont do it imo

But on the other hand..
Do you speak any korean?
I understand the best way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in it
but without at least a middle school level of korean it will be hard to teach succesfully

also. connections are very important
meet with families, go to social events and get your name out
koreans are always looking for the "latest trend" or the "next big thing"

Use a different recruiter. Sounds really really sketchy.
