Religious Topics?

I've seen some topics on TL that dealt with religion. More often than not (that is, in my limited viewing experience), they get closed. Are there rules against making religious topics here on account of their being flame-war magnets, or is there a set of rules by which a topic might abide in order to facilitate discussion oriented around religion?

We've had enough of them to know that they degenerate into shitfests almost immediately, thus they get closed pretty much instantly now. Just don't make them.

Pretty sure religion threads aren't allowed. They're almost guaranteed to degenerate into flaming, and there's practically no way to prevent this from happening. If you really want to discuss religion, you're probably better off doing that on some other forum.

They don't get closed on principle, but naturally, religious topics often evoke very heated discussions. A few religious zealots coupled with a lot of 'anyone who believes in anything is an idiot'-atheists are usually enough to make any religious topic unreadable after page 1.

If you really want to generate good discussion about religious topics, I'd suggest you put a lot of effort into the OP and hope that people will follow your example. Asking a mod to monitor the thread would definitely help as well.

Religious threads tend to get pretty out of hand and so the mods close them asap.

Basically people cannot contain their internet rage and end up lashing out at others in page after page of 1000 word posts. In the end, it doesn't even matter.

Feel free to try though, just don't take it personally when it goes up in flames.

Then I shall probably make no religious topics on TL. Thanks for the input and willingness to help a newbie.

people who are religious enough to defend their religion tend to be pretty stupid so the arguments are never very worthwhile.

I guess this is the official stance... I actually wasn't sure whether or not staff would even attempt to try to keep the thread open anymore at this point...

wooo here we go again!
Religious thread on TL are the most ridiculous things ever

like 1 % religious zealots vs 10% cynical, snobby atheist dicks
with 29% religious people getting grouped in with the 1% of religious zealots and the 60% of misc believers facepalming

You know how, in real life, a whole bunch of wars got started because of religious differences? it's pretty much like that on the internet too lol.
Can't believe I'm still here playing this same game

Case in point.

Lack of religion isnt really a religion though, more like a view, or stance.
Its a wrong one obviously, and all of you will burn in eternal hellfire for not embracing jesus into your heart etc
