So I was talking to a coworker and he was saying how his girlfriend has to use a fresh new towel every time she showers. We both agreed that its completely absurd, since once you are out of the shower you are clean. So naturally drying yourself with the towel leaves nothing but water which can just dry off and be used another day. Out of curiosity we wanted to see how many people reuse their towels because we had a split number of people around work. Some grab a new towel every day and some reuse.

I pretty much change mine once a week, that way I can wash it at the end of the week when I do all my other laundry.

I've noticed that a towel that is reused multiple times starts to smell sour, especially right after you dry yourself with it.

I usually change mine between a week and two weeks... if you shower properly, all its doing is wiping off water so i think its sort of a waste to do it any less than a week, though i can understand that some people want it washed more often than that.

How can you use the same towel for over a week? Showers get you clean, yes, but you're not going to be completely clean even after the shower (unless you're doing nothing all day). You can't even argue for conserving water because, really, one towel or three, the cycle takes the same amount of water. The only way you can conserve water is by not using a new towel every time you shower because you'll end up using a cycle just to wash all your towels.

What? The less often you change towels, the less often you need to wash towels. Of course it conserves water. And most washing machines allow for different sized loads, which use different amounts of water.

Edit: I guess I am just more conscious about this than most people, living in a desert and all...

He didnt say his towels smell after he uses them once or after he washes them but after reusing them a few time. I notice the same thing. They start to develop this weird sour smell to them

Could be water, could be soap scum, or not washing/scrubbing thoroughly enough and dirt or dead skin staying on it, or by reusing multiple times he means multiple times.

I always imagined that if you come out of the shower very clean, there's not much "uncleanliness" to be absorbed by the towel aside from water and perhaps a tiny bit of leftover soap/shampoo.

That and make sure you let your towel dry very well. Goes for any porous product (like dishwashing sponges). Bacteria and microorganisms multiply quickly in moist (and warm) areas.

Every shower I get a new towel..however it does make sense that a new towels shouldn't be switched so much because you come out of the shower clean..but its just what I'm used to..

If you hang your towel to dry after you've used it, it wont smell at all.
If you shower properly you are clean when you're done, so it doesn't really get dirty.

I use mine 2-3 times though, because I just like the idea of having a fresh towel :p

I do once a week with the laundry like the OP. I didn't know people switched towels every day...crazy. But probably I could have gathered that some people do switch so much since hotels do it every day unless you tell them not to.

Its fine to reuse towels. Just hang them up to dry so they don't stay wet. If they stay wet, bacteria propagates and they start smelling. I usually use towels 2-3x before getting a new one because using a new towel every day=mass laundry plus bad for the environment and using a towel too often deprives you of the fluffiness and they eventually do smell.

After I shower, theoretically I'm the cleanest thing in the house. Therefore, my towels should get cleaner every time I use them.

+ Show Spoiler +
Typically use towels until they start to smell. So between 3 days and a week or two depending on the towel.

i change mine everytime i shower. i use the towel to wipe my face after brushing my teeth and i think it's kinda nasty since dead skin gets on the towels. humid env+dead skin=perfect medium for bacterial and fungal growth. : (

i dont really understand why people would be wasteful enough to use a new towel everyday. I mean after the shower arent you supposed to be clean? Then you're just towelling off the water, so the towel should be clean every time, at least fairly clean. I've never had a towel smelling or seeming weird and I only wash them every time I do laundry which is once every two weeks, if i remember or have room on laundry day, and ive never noticed anything strange.

kdog question

To the people who reuse towels. Do you rewear clothes? Im not talking about pants or coats. I mean like t shirts, sweaters, long sleeves. I think everyone here changes their boxers daily.

Growing up, I never used the same towel more than once without washing it. Now that I've been exposed to the world of multi-day towel usage and have to go through the hassle and expense of doing all my own laundry in college, I generally use them 2-3 times.

Actually what you think is false.

#1 I watched an old Montel Williams Show (i know, great source right?) but there was some germ expert or smth on the show and explained that when you towel off millions and billions of dead skin cells scoff off and into the towel. And since it's damp and warm it's a perfect breeding ground for germs. You should never use a towel twice.

#2 Girls often have super wet hair and the towel becomes soaked when they are done with it, probably doesn't dry out in time or smells bad after a day.

I still reuse my towels though, probably change every 2-7 days.
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

Interesting topic. I change mine every 3-4 showers.

Which reminds me... has anyone staying in Korea noticed how Korean-Koreans prefer small towels (like 1/4 the size of standard in US. can't even wrap around your waist) and change them every day? Those small ones get soo wet after you dry yourself.

I've never met anyone who uses the same towel twice in a row. I do agree with the points made in this thread, but I literally have never heard of anyone ever, in my entire life, using a towel more than once. The world is a big place.

Wow. I have never heard of someone switching towels everyday until now.

It sounds like a cultural thing, I guess. Clean or not, I can't imagine wiping my ass crack with a towel one day, then using it to wipe my face the next. I think people underestimate bacteria, and how hard it is to rid your body of various germs.

5-7 days, doing laundry once a week.

On a side note: there isn't just water, there's skin cells, rests of shampoo/shower gel that didn't come off, maybe something else.

Also, of all the threads on TL right now, I decided to post in this one for my monthly post, because I found it the most interesting. That either says alot about the quality of TL threads nowadays or about me. Not quite sure.
Nobody ever reads signatures of people like me, do they?

about a week i'd say, our radiator in the bathroom is broken so the towel can't be dried properly, so it's just way too wet at about a week.

IF it worked, probably months.
