@ nony , i thought it was more of a time issue rather money, although the two are related.
Rich people have money to afford spending time looking for healthier alternatives whereas poor people do not have that luxury, a common example being home cooking vs fast food dining.

Eating healthy , but with a tight budget and little time, it is a challenge - but absolutely do-able. It just requires a little extra research, and, if you buy locally - knowing how to shop in your area.

I don't personally, but i know my friend has his own garden, and makes a lot of the foods he eats himself,

Also bananas have more price/healthy calories than apples :p
some reasonably healthy/somewhat cheap for their high calorie are -
dark chocolate, nuts, canola oil, cauliflower, carrots, peanut butter

but i do agree that you'll only have 2 of the three
[ ] high calorie
[ ] cheap
[ ] healthy

I don't think so sir.

What do you think then? Your posts are rather uninformative. Your first post in this thread you don't disclose the information as to whether or not you eat such an unhealthy diet and stay thin or whether you are horribly obese.

1. Environment/context/social influence
2. Lack of willpower/discipline
3. Lack of knowledge about how to lose weight
4. Lack of resources (can only afford cheap bad food, no time for exercise, no access to things necessary for exercise)
5. Genetics

And I agree with sadistx's assessment

3 and 4 don't really qualify. Everyone knows to lose weight they should eat less and exercise more. As for the cost of food, its a lot cheaper to buy a dozen apples than a bag of chips. Fruit and vegetables are cheap alternatives to a lot of snack food and can help save money by combining them with meals instead of other sides that people might be having.

Eating less and exercising more is not a good general rule to apply when trying to lose weight. "Eat less" is so vague it's stupid to follow that advice.

No its not, its implying you should consume fewer calories which is perfectly sound advice.

Say you wanted to lose weight. How many calories should you stop eating? What foods should you stop eating to reduce your intake? How should you exercise? Do you know about glycemic index and does it make a difference? Which fats are ok to eat? When should I exercise? Should I exercise on an empty stomach? How often should I eat to influence my metabolism?

Most people don't know how to answer these questions. That's why they're fat. Weight loss isn't simple and I'm sure most people who have tried to lose weight will tell you that. Saying you should reduce your intake of calories and exercise is not good advice.

What? You fuckin kiddin me? That's bullshit. Eat less and exercise. Eat the SAME and exercise. It WILL have a positive effect. And most people who are overweight know damn well what part of their daily diet they should cut out. There's no complexity to it.

if by genetics you mean fat lazy parents teaching their children their fat lazy ways, then yes.
Even if you're young with a high metabolism you're still going to get high cholesterol and be at risk for things like heart attacks.

Also eating pizza and bread isn't really that unhealthy at all. Pizza itself covers most of the main food groups.
Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Oh goodness me, FOX tv where do you get your sight? Can't you keep track, the puck is black. That's why the ice is white.

You're right, you will lose weight if you follow the rules of "eat less, exercise more". But it might not be permanent, you might pile the weight back on, even if you continue with the same diet. You might be doing your body more harm than good by not eating a balanced diet.

I'm not saying that eating less and exercising more is bad advice, it's just not good, because there are so many factors which affect weight loss.

What? HFCS is just a fructose sucrose mixture. Fructose is probably better for you because it metabolizes into glucose more slowly than sucrose (which is a double sugar with both glucose and fructose). Fructose is just an isomer of glucose, and has the same potential energy as glucose.

As for salt, it's not because of any additives. Additives to salt? A negligible amount of antistick stuff, and iodine, which happens to be essential for your body. It's because salt bonds with water and increases the water retention of your body, which makes you seem fatter, though absolutely no fat/carbohydrates/alcohol/protein is actually being ingested. That and saltier foods tend to make you eat more.

Oh, and sea salt is still NaCl

no reason in paying more for the same thing if you're going to overconsume it anyways

Just don't get snacks so it will be too much trouble to go to the kitchen and cook whenever you get the munchies. Your own laziness will be your diet.

I'm not sure if I agree with this... I think it's easier to start working out a few times a week than it is to make all the changes many people need to make in order to start losing weight.... then again people with severe weight-loss difficulty also have trouble working out probably...

1. Consuming high fructose corn syrup in soft drinks
Without a doubt the number 1 reason why people are fat is this. High fructose corn syrup is a highly highly concentrated sugar that is added in soft drinks and condiments. People consume these endlessly and wonder why they are fat. The human body digests sugars first before fats. If you have too much sugar in your body it'll take longer for your body to metabolize it. Your body will be working twice as hard to metabolize the sugar and will never get to the fat, which it then just stores. Want to know how much HFCS you consume? Look on the back of the products you consume and READ THE INGREDIENTS.

Healthy Alternatives: Sodas WITHOUT high fructose corn syrup. Yes, they do exist, you just have to read the ingredients and do a little research. No, you will not find them from any of the major soft drink companies like coca-cola and pepsi because they WANT you to be fat.

2. Consuming too much wheat & dairy
I know they say bread and milk is good for you. They say a lot of things are good for you that aren't. Are you going to listen to them? I've personally lost weight by abstaining from ingesting wheat and dairy. Try it and you will see that your body metabolizes and digests much better without them. I now only occasionally eat a pizza. Nothing wrong with eating it occassionally, but if most of your diet consists of bread, pasta, pizza, ice cream, cheese, milk, and cereal then its probably time for a change.

Healthy Alternatives: There are grains that are actually better than wheat, such as rice and beans. There are non-wheat breads you can find at the store such as Ezekiel Bread, Manna Bread and other rice and sprouted breads. Just do some research. For dairy there isn't much of a healthy alternative, but I will say that you can buy butter without milk fats, you can buy ice cream without milk fats and cheese overall is just god awful for you, but once in a while won't kill you.

3. Using table salt, ketchup and other condiments
It's no surprise that ketchup, mustard and mayo and other condiments contain high fructose corn syrup. No surprise at all, which is why its the third reason you are still fat. Don't believe me? Read the ingredients on the back of ketchup, mustard or mayo next time and see what it says. I personally like things bland, but if you are a person who loves to spice up their meals, then consider the healthy alternatives.

Healthy Alternatives: Use SEA SALT instead of table salt. Table salt is highly processed and contains additives. Sea salt is produced through the evaporation of sea water. If you want a sweet condiment try honey. Honey is a natural sweetner and beats ketchup any day of the week. By all means, if you love condiments consider the organic ones where they don't have additives and HFCS.

4. Using or consuming vegetable oil
Chances are if you eat out at restaurants and fast food spots you are ingesting vegetable oil. That's the oil they use to cook the food they serve you. Do you use vegetable oil to cook? If you do, consider using olive oil instead. There's a difference between good and bad oils. Good oils are the ones that contain a high amount of unsaturated fats such as olive oil. Vegetable oil contains a high amount saturated fat and worst of all they are hydrogenated which then produces trans fats the worst type of fat for you.

Healthy Alternative: Olive oil is the only oil I would recommend universally. Meaning it's good for everyone and has the best unsaturated per saturated fat ratio. From my research olive oil is superior than all the others.

5. Rarely exercising or sweating
How much sun do you get a day? Go out and get some sun and do a little bit of exercising. You don't have to run a marathon, but some sort of physical activity will not only benefit you physically but relieve stress and clear your mind. This is not just for fat people, but for people in general. We all have to keep our body and mind active daily. Energy consumed must be used and released.

Healthy Alternative: None

personally, my problem isn't the time hitting the gym, but my high metabolism so i literally have to eat massive amounts of high calorie food, and ... healthy at that as well.

I was actually in my school library today reading up on this stuff. Some theories listed:

1. Artificial Sweeteners - They mess with your body's ability to properly measure your caloric intake. Rats in tests conducted on this showed that they would eat more.

2. Lack of sleep - Reduces the output of a hormone that makes you feel full and increases one that makes you want to sleep. It was shown that 33% of people who slept less than 6.5 (?) hours of sleep per night on average were obese but only 22% of those who got 6.5 to 9 hours of sleep.

3. Fat Virus - Yes, a virus that makes you gain weight. Unfortunately I forgot most of the information on this one... Here's a link on the topic.

That's all I can remember...

It actually takes more energy to burn off the fat than there was in what you ate.

I would have to disagree. For me putting on muscle is pretty damn hard, and I've been eating properly and working out for a while. I'm still only like a month in though since I decided to start being a little more disciplined though. I see guys at the gym who look bigger than me even though I lift more than them. That is not cool.

The problem is that just working out a few times a week does surprisingly little to build actual mass without making other changes to one's life style for most people. Diet is hugely important.

Mustard? Mustard has vinegar, water, mustard seed salt, and a few spices like garlic powder and paprika. Might want to get some spectacles.
