1. Consuming high fructose corn syrup in soft drinks Without a doubt the number 1 reason why people are fat is this. High fructose corn syrup is a highly highly concentrated sugar that is added in soft drinks and condiments. People consume these endlessly and wonder why they are fat. The human body digests sugars first before fats. If you have too much sugar in your body it'll take longer for your body to metabolize it. Your body will be working twice as hard to metabolize the sugar and will never get to the fat, which it then just stores. Want to know how much HFCS you consume? Look on the back of the products you consume and READ THE INGREDIENTS.
Healthy Alternatives: Sodas WITHOUT high fructose corn syrup. Yes, they do exist, you just have to read the ingredients and do a little research. No, you will not find them from any of the major soft drink companies like coca-cola and pepsi because they WANT you to be fat.
2. Consuming too much wheat & dairy I know they say bread and milk is good for you. They say a lot of things are good for you that aren't. Are you going to listen to them? I've personally lost weight by abstaining from ingesting wheat and dairy. Try it and you will see that your body metabolizes and digests much better without them. I now only occasionally eat a pizza. Nothing wrong with eating it occassionally, but if most of your diet consists of bread, pasta, pizza, ice cream, cheese, milk, and cereal then its probably time for a change.
Healthy Alternatives: There are grains that are actually better than wheat, such as rice and beans. There are non-wheat breads you can find at the store such as Ezekiel Bread, Manna Bread and other rice and sprouted breads. Just do some research. For dairy there isn't much of a healthy alternative, but I will say that you can buy butter without milk fats, you can buy ice cream without milk fats and cheese overall is just god awful for you, but once in a while won't kill you.
3. Using table salt, ketchup and other condiments It's no surprise that ketchup, mustard and mayo and other condiments contain high fructose corn syrup. No surprise at all, which is why its the third reason you are still fat. Don't believe me? Read the ingredients on the back of ketchup, mustard or mayo next time and see what it says. I personally like things bland, but if you are a person who loves to spice up their meals, then consider the healthy alternatives.
Healthy Alternatives: Use SEA SALT instead of table salt. Table salt is highly processed and contains additives. Sea salt is produced through the evaporation of sea water. If you want a sweet condiment try honey. Honey is a natural sweetner and beats ketchup any day of the week. By all means, if you love condiments consider the organic ones where they don't have additives and HFCS.
4. Using or consuming vegetable oil Chances are if you eat out at restaurants and fast food spots you are ingesting vegetable oil. That's the oil they use to cook the food they serve you. Do you use vegetable oil to cook? If you do, consider using olive oil instead. There's a difference between good and bad oils. Good oils are the ones that contain a high amount of unsaturated fats such as olive oil. Vegetable oil contains a high amount saturated fat and worst of all they are hydrogenated which then produces trans fats the worst type of fat for you.
Healthy Alternative: Olive oil is the only oil I would recommend universally. Meaning it's good for everyone and has the best unsaturated per saturated fat ratio. From my research olive oil is superior than all the others.
5. Rarely exercising or sweating How much sun do you get a day? Go out and get some sun and do a little bit of exercising. You don't have to run a marathon, but some sort of physical activity will not only benefit you physically but relieve stress and clear your mind. This is not just for fat people, but for people in general. We all have to keep our body and mind active daily. Energy consumed must be used and released.
Healthy Alternative: None

can you list some popular soda brands that would be a good choice
Good read though

Sprite isnt near as bad imo since it has no caffiene..

Why drink soft drinks?
Water all the way man!

I agree that a lot of dairy isn't really good, but Milk is actually not all bad. Obviously fat-free milk is disgusting, and other milk has fat, but it's not that bad. The dairy products that are really bad are things like cheese, butter (kills your liver too), sour cream, etc.
Also, rice is just as bad as wheat per amount of calories. Beans are indeed good, I wouldn't bet on Manna bread being too good, no idea what ezekiel bread is.
Salt is just not too good overall, since it raises your blood pressure a lot. Not all ketchup has corn syrup in it, but a lot do. A good substitute to ketchup imo is to just buy tomato paste thingy, and mix it with some water, add some pepper and w.e and use that, it can be pretty good, add some garlic too.
Also olive oil has a pretty high % of saturated fat. It's not necessarily bad for you unless you eat too much of it, but if you want some really low % saturated fat oils for cooking, then grape-seed oil is probably the best.
agreed with everything else

Copypasta troll. These are the kind of garbage tabloid myths you might read in People's magazine. They get recycled in the media about 10 times a month to scare the sheeple.
The only one that has some merit is #5.
1/5.

Mislabeled. These aren't the top 5 reasons people are still fat. I'd say the reasons go something like this:
1. Environment/context/social influence 2. Lack of willpower/discipline 3. Lack of knowledge about how to lose weight 4. Lack of resources (can only afford cheap bad food, no time for exercise, no access to things necessary for exercise) 5. Genetics
And I agree with sadistx's assessment

i agree with all these, its a great thing that you are sharing this and hopefully the more people are informed they can start making the right decision and stop playing to their ignorance, great infromation.

Nony is so right its almost scary..

I think no.1 should be. Your fat if your sitting here trying to read how not to be fat.
Food things are right. But, it's not the only way to cut weight or to not being fat.
What he says isn't wrong, I wouldn't say it's the leading causes but it's a big reason why USA has the highest obesity rate in the world. USA consumes more red meat and pork than any other country on average. This could be a possibility also? :D
#2 though is the least of worries. Reduce fat or fat free milk and easy on the cheese and you should be alright. Bread is good for you def wheat bread (since digests and breaks down easier in your body).
I think everyone has access to exercise, not sure how you can't have access to it? willpower and discipline though is highly needed. Of course balancing your diet to the goal your looking for in results.(body building {more carbs & protein} or just losing weight {lesser carbs & cut calorie intake})

Pepsi tried making Pepsi and Mountain Dew without the HFCS (and with "real cane sugar"). They stopped sometime in June, probably because it was really expensive to make. (Marketed it as limited time only)
Also interesting to note that Coke made a Kosher Coke for Passover.
I avoid HFCS at all costs personally. Probably a big reason why I've dropped mad weight.

do you know if there is a difference in fat content between blended olive oil and pure olive oil?

Oh dear god. Why is HFCS inherently worse than cane sugar? Please show me some evidence that this is so. Fructose is fructose, no? Why is fructose from corn any worse than fructose from a sugar cane plant?
|
What about juice? Apple? Orange? Cocktails? Fruit punch? Is there a major difference between "from concentrate" and "not from concentrate"? Is it 100% juice when they say it's 100%?
|
They aren't the top five reasons, but there are still some interesting tidbits in there so that's nice.
Nony hit the nail right on the head, and not because hes a respected member of the community but because he's right.
edit: as for juice/pop and other drinks, they are pretty much terrible. I'm sure that there are some that aren't so bad but I just stick to water, tea and a little milk, with my unhealthy stuff being coffee and alcohol.
