so i'm going for a rather short vacation to washington dc this weekend
and i thought i'd ask what there is to do and see in washington. im looking forward to the museums and the art galleries (the only thing i looked up so far), but is there anything else?
i guess it's sort of hard since i didnt write down any of my interests, but you can be as general and as specific as you like haha
oh and im staying in a hotel in downtown i think.

I tell everyone I know to go to the National Archives to see the Declaration of Independence. You can see original signatures of the founding fathers and everything- definitely one of my favorites that some people overlook.
Definitely check out at least a few museums, holocaust museum is really good (but quite sobering) and the American Natural History Museum is probably one of my favorites as part of the Smithsonian.
Spy museum is pretty sick too but you gotta pay like 20 bucks to get in which blows.
Art gallery is really good as well.

you can easily spend a day or two at the national mall, visiting all the museums (natural history and air and space are the best ones), looking at the obvious monuments, blah blah. chinatown is nearby and though not really anything special it's near the mall and full of people
if you take the red line west there's the national zoo which is awesome and more of the bar scene. if you're into more touristy stuff NW dc has a lot of beautiful embassies and architecture. dupont circle is really nice to walk around during the night. really, there's no point in asking for tips more specific than that, you will always easily find something to do there.

Maybe the high cost is to encourage you to sneak in.

i guess it depends on the type of person you are, but i always found the monuments to be a big letdown when i lived in dc. there's not much more to the lincoln memorial than what you've already seen in a picture. i'd go with the smithsonian museums and the zoo, the spy museum and holocaust museum are also must sees, though the latter is quite the downer as one might expect. i'd avoid doing things like a white house tour or sitting in at the supreme court (if they are even in session) since those are security hassles. dupont circle is okay at night, but you still get a lot of douchey yuppies trickling in from adams morgan. enjoy!

oh, and if you are going to do the monuments, i always thought it was more fun (as well as considerably less crowded) at night

DO NOT go to the National Aquarium. It sucks balls. The Zoo is awesome though

The new national air and space museum is pretty awesome. They have a flight simulator in there that'll rock your world. I got in and just started doing barrel rolls
