When I arrived, everyone was running around like crazy, a mask on their face.
A strange portrayal of a R&D lab. Looks more like a hospital than a Telecom company.

The HRs came to me and gave me a mask.

-ok, anyway, two guys here got the A flu !"
I don't know how it is in the other countries but in Japan, media are crazy about that. Actually, media are crazy about everything in Japan. They are very alarmist and paranoiac.
Security is THE issue here and when it comes to something like A flu, they talk like it is the end of the world, a crazy virus that is killing absolutely everyone or a mass destruction biological weapon.
The Japanese people are also very VERY cautious. I still don't understand why people here have ALL subscribed to the Secom private security/police and pay so much attention about security because Tokyo, tbh, is one of the most peaceful places I've ever been. I mean, com'on, look at these girls. You put just one of these girls, dressed like "that" in Paris, even at noon, she'll prolly get ass-raped (ok, I exaggerate a little bit. Just a little bit, uh).
So because of this kind of paranoia, people put their masks and I've been request to put mine too.

Ok, let me make this straight : this is USELESS.
Why ? Because it's impossible to wear a mask 24/7 and because Tokyo summer is so damn hot, everyone just takes their masks off when it's getting too horrible. And guess what ? They usually take it off in the metro (underground, train, tube... whatever you call it).
How the hell they wanna take it off when there are so many people around ? Don't they care about the infection anymore ? And why the hell the journalists or reporters are the only ones who never wear a mask ?
And com'on, the "normal" flu is killing much more people than this A flu so don't make it so big.
So if you are a doctor reading this and get pissed off because I write shit, please explain yourself but for me, the A flu is not that terrible (actually, if we got infected now and we manage to survive, are we stronger to survive to the next mutation ? this is just a question, don't flame.) and the mask... it's just a toy to distract people.
Btw, there is a good point in this mass hysteria : my lab closed for 4 days :D uhuh, 4 days of SC :DDDDDDDD

Yeah i think just about everybody is completely tired of this media alarmist bullshit, and really anyone with half a brain realizes that this is just another case of the media picking up something and running with it. Remember "Super AIDS"? (http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5529a1.htm), apparently one person showing a resistant aids infection means the end of the world for the rest of us. They're like this with every disease, including SARS. The diseases they should be afraid of, Ebola, for one, get completely ignored because they aren't so in the public spotlight.

japan does a lot of things that dont make sense. everyone does it, so they all think it's normal. it's not so bad, since you get used to it. it's never anything extreme like jumping off a bridge, though. it's just a bother sometimes

yeah the swine flu is ridiculousy overrated. I'm so tired of hearing stuff about it all the time, when it's functioning almost exactly as a common flu lol

I think Ebola isn't considered much of a threat because it's too deadly to be effective. Most people are going to die before they pass it to someone else.

H5N1 was different. Mortality rate was over 50%. But this swine flu is as dangerous as the common flu.
I swear, this must be some kind of another governmental bailout to support the pharmacist industry.

Of course, I didn't mean to downplay the mortality rate for avian flu, I simply meant that the East Asian governments have had bad scares before. That said, while the swine flu is as dangerous as the common flu in terms of mortality rate and symptoms, the original fear was that the mass outbreak would paralyze the healthcare systems. The fear of it being a second coming of the Spanish flu or the Black Death was a notion that the media implanted, and that seems to be the fear most are griped with now.

-wear a mask omgomgomg
-wash your hands 10000000 times a day omgomgomgomg
-use alcohol after washing your hands omgomgomgomg
-pay attention on x, y, z omgomgomgmg
like everyone has to multitask like crazy 200+ apm to stay alive because of the flu
