i wouldn't really worry about it, everyone is fatter at their 10yr reunion

edit: to clarify, i'm not discouraging you from dieting, but if you're going to diet and exercise and eat healthy, do it for health reasons -- doing it for a single event is just going to make you inconsistent once the reunion passes

HS reunions are built around coming back and bragging about yourself. Sounds like the perfect reason to go on a diet to me, don't know what you guys are talking about.

If you don't want to eat chicken every night there are a lot of things that are just as good. Any kind of fish fillet, tilapia, salmon, catfish, etc. or white meat pork, all very high in protein and very low in fat. Unless you smother the fish in tartar sauce, then I guess it's not that good for you. Keep your metabolism going throughout the day by eating things like fruit / vegetables / salads / yogurt / cottage cheese / high fiber cereal / hard boiled egg whites / etc.

losing weight is pretty simply : burn more calories than you consume.

I always thought it was all the beer and steaks you consume in Korea. I'm pretty sure if you cut back on those and exercised you could lose some weight, but I'm not about the entire 12 kg. You could always stalk progamers and take picture of them or something- that'd be good exercise

losing 20% of your weight is no easy feat, especially if you don't have that much body fat to start with... ultimately I don't think it really matters what diet you choose as long as you're exercising more calories than you're intaking.

oh and let me know when you're in jersey =)

I don't stalk, but trust me - taking photos of the progamers will not lose you any weight. Considering the amount of food parties I've had with eSTRO I'm not losing any weight this year!

I didn't read this whole thing, but the biggest thing you can do to help yourself is to plan all your meals ahead of time. Being out and realizing you have to eat is one of the worst things that can happen, because then you get stuck eating at some cafe and probably breaking your diet.

The atkins diet is the most effective in terms of weight loss.

I don't wanna be thin then die of a clogged artery... I mean, I know I should be eating more protein and stuff but don't really wanna eat chicken all the time... nor wanna drink protein shakes.

I've heard Atkins referred to as a "low-carb ripoff diet." I don't know the exact specifics of Atkins, but there's some things it advocates that other low-carb diets don't such as unfermented soy, raw vegetables, and of course all the processed junk they sell. Anyway, I'll agree with the general premise. I believe that a low carbohydrate diet or lifestyle choice is the most effective in terms of weight loss, and specifically fat loss. And you won't get heart disease.

Basically, on this diet you should eat things like:
All meats with full fat. Dark meat chicken, fatty steak (ribeye, yum), pork belly, etc.
Eggs with yolk of course
Full fat cheese
Raw Milk or Table Cream since even grocery store whole milk is fairly watered down.
Cooked vegetables

If you want to bring something to work to eat, chicken, ground beef, sausage, etc. hold up in the microwave pretty well.

When you do eat carbohydrates, eat them sparingly and avoid sugar, juices, and highly processed carbs.

Traditional weight loss diets are based on cutting calories, which leads to semi-starvation. It will help you lose weight, but they leave people hungry and sap them of energy. This combination of the body's decreased energy output and hunger is why so many people struggle on these diets. You also lose large amounts of muscle on this kind of diet, and your goal is to lose fat, not muscle.

Low-carb diets are high in animal fat, moderate in protein, and low in carbohydrates. This combination does a better job of satiating hunger and is the human body's preferred energy source. Most low carb diets allow you to eat unrestricted calories as long as you keep your carb count below a certain amount (something like 30g-60g max) and eat plenty of animal fat. Keep in mind things like fruit are still carbs and should be factored into your daily carb limit. The diets work despite unrestricted calories because the body can burn off excess calories as heat and the body won't slow down its the metabolism like a semi-starvation diet does.

Carbohydrates trigger the body's insulin response which slows down the metabolism of body fat and causes your body to sore more of it. This is why sugar is especially fattening and the first thing removed in any weight loss diet. More complex carbohydrates also produce a lower insulin response, but animal fats produce no insulin response.

Animal fat doesn't lead to heart disease. Here is a somewhat short explanation: Cholesterol levels show some correlation with heart disease, but people with low cholesterol levels show higher rates of cancer. The all death rate is about the same. More accurate tests such as High Density Lipid (HDL), Low Density Lipid (LDL), triglyceride measurements show a much greater correlation with heart disease. These lipids carry cholesterol and triglycerides throughout the bloodstream. When a person eats a heavy carb meal (especially a sugary one), the liver produces more triglycerides, which requires more lipids to carry it. The presence of excessive LDL and triglycerides along with a low level of HDL is what correlates strongly with heart disease. I also want to specify that it's not the presence of HDL or LDL cholesterol, it's the lipids themselves. HDL and LDL cholesterol are the same cholesterol and that level is irrelevant. It's the number of lipids and triglycerides that matter.

Traditional human diets prefer high fat, low carbohydrate diets as well. Before the birth of farming and civilzation, humans hunted animals and gathered some fruits, vegetables, and nuts. Animals provided the bulk of the calories and humans had a preference for fatty animals. Native Americans hunted older buffaloes because of they had larger deposits of fat than the younger ones. The vegetables needed cooking or fermentation before being digested and the fruits in traditional diets had less fructose in them than the fruits today, which have been bred to be sweeter. Some populations live entirely off of meat and fat, like traditional eskimos and they are free of obesity, heart disease, cancer, etc.

I like the low carb, high fat diet because I get to eat foods I love. It's high energy food and satiating. If you have tried other diets, and haven't had much success, then I highly recommend giving this a try for a couple months. I tried to keep this post short, yet it still ended up 3 times longer than I wanted it, but hopefully it helps.

Hmm, thanks guys for your imput thus far.

I can't do weigh watchers as it's not available in Korea.
I've been to a 한의원 before and it just makes me so hungry that I'd rather just eat sensibly.

I don't drink and eat steak all the time, either Ever since all our guests left for the summer I've barely drank (just that one night with some TLers on the 21st.) Only went to the all you can eat steak place cuz it's a good place to entertain group meetings.

Basically it's just the fast foods - not even the burgers and fries but even the Korean food I eat are heavy in sodium from what I hear. We tend to eat a lot of processed stuff since it's convenient, but I guess I can go and buy brown rice to mix with the white when I cook at home. I definitely am looking to get into a habit of eating better. (and saving some money while at it.)

Celery is expensive in Korea. So are banana and they are all processed. Funny how in America there are so many resources and foods one can eat to be healthier yet .... yeah.

So... more fish and chicken... maybe roasted potatoes... salads. Steamed veggies? Lean steak or pork, no sauce.

Cuz I was always friendly with most the kids at my school and I am genuinely curious as to what they have all been up to in the last 10 years. Yes, we have facebook for that now, but still. Also, gives me a chance to go back to the States for a week.

Low carb diets are not sustainable. That's the #1 problem of all diets in general, and especially of low carb diets. If you really want to do it right, you change the way you eat every day and you don't call it a diet, because that usually implies temporary change.

Ah, hope it works out well. Everyone I've talked to that's been to one said it was awkward... and depressing when you meet the people whose highpoint was highschool. D:

EDIT: Depending on your cooker, you might need to 50/50 the brown/white rice. Mine turns out weird with all brown.

Hi Susie, you should really consider eating 5-6 small meals a day. The best way to do this in my experience is to pack a snack for between breakfast and lunch, then split your lunch up into two meals.

Also, and I know it really sucks, you will do much better for yourself if you don't eat after 8:00ish PM. Your metabolism naturally slows as evening sets in and it prepares for sleep, so late night munchies are generally stored mostly as fat.
