As i was searching for some PC related information on the Tech support forum, i noticed that users really make shitty OPs and don't get punished for that.

As an example, there is a excellent topic on computer building and advices on buying PC hardware (or laptops, notebooks and so on) that is currently keeping updated by skyR (http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=137554). Despite the thread being active, there are a lot of jerks starting threads like "buying a new PC" and "new laptop, what to do?" and rubbish like that.

Made new rules should be added to Tech support so people would search for a solution first, or a few new topics should be made with general information ( keyboards topic, headsets topic, streaming topic) so people don't need to start another "best gaming headset?").

Also, a picture for reference

Any solution would be better than the current state.

Thanks.
I am not good with quotes

Well, aside from certain pieces of software that commonly come up, like Xsplit, and hardware spec stuff, which I agree should definitely be streamlined a bit, a lot of times the problems will be completely different.

Half the time, people are just naming their threads incredibly poorly. Unless the Tech Support forum was going to just have a sticky for each category, there likely isn't a way to fix it, since you'd be sticking people with a choice between possibly derailing and possibly duplicating. Both are against the rules, how do you make a post if you aren't sure if you're having the same problem?

I got kind of fed up with Tech Support a while ago and left, but I've been assured bad posts will be taken care of, so I'll probably start visiting again! As always TL is working on ways to make the forums better, so maybe we can come up with something for Tech Support :D

Have they considered sub-forums for tech support. It may clutter, but it feels like tech support breaks down to, stream settings and stream help, peripherals (mouse and keyboard), how to and what to buy for a computer, and computer problems.

Forum specific moderation might also work, if the stuff is in place for it. I know Tech Support has some real heavy contributing gurus, like Myrmidon and SkyR, who are really helpful, and would probably be safe to have moderating at least the subforum.

if you'd like you can start centralized threads like the computer resource build and we can just start pointing people there for things like streaming and peripherals. the thing about the tech support forum is that problems people have tend to be fairly unique and, as always, having 5 running conversations in one thread tends to get confusing.

it's really up to you guys, if you want to move towards centralized threads, make a quality op and we'll start enforcing it.
the world's a playground. you know that when you're a kid, but somewhere along the way everyone forgets it.

In most tech support forums usually you sticky a read me post on how to create a help thread and be it trouble shooting or building a computer, I don't mind the number of threads but rather the random quality to them.

Are we going to need a new tech support guideline soon since thehitman seems like he's about to be permanently banned soon and won't be able to update the OP >.>

And Plexa's sticky could use a spring cleaning. Some threads and information aren't relevant anymore such as how to never save a replay again, the ultimate computer build thread ( http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=124628 ), customized hotkeys, guideline to sc2 computers ( http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=113094 ), etc.

Most of the threads seem to be about streaming =\ so if anyone is experienced with that, they should start a centralized thread for everything related to streaming.

A slight aside, but BW general has seen an increase in "unpunished" shitty threads too, but I suppose they're not dealt with since there aren't so many threads in total.

So lately, Tech Support has been getting an influx of blatantly bad advice based on not reading the thread, or people just pulling stuff out of their asses trying to sound smart. I know nobody is perfect, and I'm guilty of not being right every time myself, but some of the stuff people try to say is beyond terrible advice.

Any chance we can get moderation on people who don't read the posting guidelines from the sticky? I know I recently reported a post where a guy said someone should replace a piece of hardware to fix a software issue, and nothing happened.

Oh, and this thread should really be stickied, it might cut down on the pile of requests that fall under it, and it's an amazing resource.

Ok, I hate to say it, but this is getting ridiculous.

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=233402 Didn't read the sticky guide, or he'd at least know what information needs to exist.

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=233377 Didn't even try to search.

Factor in people making anywhere up to five separate threads for one PC build, advice ranging from moronic to malicious, something needs to happen.

And if someone says "report it" I'll go ballistic. I lost my report button because people who don't understand the difference between good and bad advice are, for some reason, responding to reports in Tech Support and not doing anything about the stuff, so I was determined to be reporting too much.

Yet my blog post publicly mocking the same idiocy gets spotlighted...

Going to have to agree with Jingle here. The tech support forums needs some quality control. Too many redundant threads coupled with terrible advice makes it tough to read.. Luckily we have a few quality posters (Jingle, skyR) who make it a good place to go to for help, but overall any sense moderation is lacking.

What about the thing they have for strategy forum where there are special blue posts for good posters? Except in the Tech support forum they would have blue posts and certain moderating powers?

^That's one idea.

I also feel we need some mods/banlings that focus on specific subforums. Some are pretty neglected. As well, some need specialized knowledge to be able to judge whether or not a post there is actually good or bad.

I hate having to bump this thread again, but this topic doesn't seem to be getting the needed love. Stupid advice that can cost people a fortune, damage PC's, or cost a ton of time in reformats, along with people not bothering to even scan the front page, let alone search, lost me my report button.

But tell somebody it's stupid to talk about marketing projections like they're going to happen, and red text is all over the place?

Just have to hope more sane people posts with links to their reasoning and people don't commit to one thing too early on in a thread. I mean i do see wasteful suggestions but not as many just horrible suggestions and usually other posts catch it. There is a balance between having an active community and then just shutting them the hell down making them afraid to post.

The issue is that there's nothing consistent. You never know from one minute to the next what's allowed in Tech Support, the only thing you can be sure is safe is posting things directly against the guidelines, such as horribly inaccurate and/or dangerous advice.

Call people stupid for stupid posts in Tech Support in a Blog=Spotlight. Do it in direct response to their post=Warning, Report the posts for violating Stickied Guidelines=Lost Report Button.

The moderation doesn't make anything resembling sense.

The problem is, we can't warn for bad suggestions or incorrect advice, because that would be editorializing in the thread. There are a few very good posters in the tech support forum (JingleHell and wormwormworm come to mind...also Myrmidon I think? Can't think of others right now) whose opinions are immediately respected. We've kind of treated the Tech Support forum as we do the Strategy forum right now in that we won't warn for bad advice, but we'll let the good users straighten it out.

It's infuriating at times, but to do otherwise would be censorship. We've been internally discussing ways to make sure casual users know which posters are considered "quality" posters (generally posters who consistently give good suggestions or advice) as currently it's not as clear as it could be. Please be patient!

So you're saying that even if Tech Support is TL's Gotham, no Batman is needed? Strat had a purge. Tech, there's basically only the option of correcting people, but eventually correcting them politely gets to be impossible, when we know they're just going to come back, over and over and over, continuing to be rude and wrong at the same time.

I'm probably the worst at keeping my patience over extended periods of fighting misinformation, but even skyR has been getting testy lately, the overall signal/noise ratio has sunk like a brick in the last week or so.

But thanks for letting me know something's in the works, that at least helps.

Ban bait.

Also, I fully support penalizing people more harshly for giving out bad/wrong advice intentionally.

Meh, with computers it's always intentional. If you aren't sure, you should be doing what I do in those situations, and saying "I'm not sure, wait for confirmation from skyR.". If you know you don't know, you should either have several google links and say you don't know, or avoid posting altogether.

If you don't know that you don't know, you need the eye opener anyway.
