WCS EU Production - Behind The Scenes

Hi Friends

After working with them on Blizzcon for some design work last year, we quickly began talking to Salon Alpin about producing a full new identity for WCS Europe. One of the immediate challenges we realized was a lack of access to players for long shoots, a fairly small budget and a short time to get it all done.

It was a ton of fun. Lip has done lots of great work at TL on PonyTails, the Race Logo shirts and the TSL4 intro....obviously this impacted our choice to get them involved with WCS, and im really glad it worked out so well.

WCS 2014 | STARCRAFT 2 EVENT IDENT

When ESL asked us to produce an intro trailer for WCS 2014, I was elated. Immediately after that, I realized that we would have to deal with the fact that the previous year’s intro had been a cutscene from the magnificent Heart of the Swarm cinematics. How could our visual style fit in this context without making us and ESL look silly in comparison to the magnitude of what had gone before?

that is one awesome opening, I personally would have gone down the more realistic route with a pro gamer and a keyboard mouse.
but damn first time i saw it, my mind was blown away :D

I really love the new intro, great work guys!

But is there as possibility that we might see something like this in future?

I think having the players in the intro is still the best, would it be possible to have shootings with the players at the ro16 when they all come to the studio? Or is it something we might never see in EU since the players are too spread out?

Edit: I could've posted any of the OSL/MSL intros, the important point is the players are always in the spotlight.

One of the issues we also had to think about was what keyboard and mouse would we use? What if we used a Razer keyboard and then signed Steelseries as a sponsor? We started to work on this in November. Thats why we went the digital route.

The reason we didnt focus on a specific progamer was so that the identity revolves around the idea that this is every player...and could be an unknown player - the idea of not being a star and competing etc. Also the turn around time between Challenger and Premier is a couple of weeks....makes things much tougher with the distance problems to pros.

The OSL intros are fantastic but have the benefit of every star player living within a 30 minute drive for shoots....and reshoots etc. I hope we get there some day!

Wow, I love the intro and had a ton of questions regarding who made it (Blizzard's ex-IGN team, ESL???). I'm so glad you posted this and it's awesome to see how much work went into it.
