Tournament is now in progress, please check for your matches!
http://www.z33k.com/games/starcraft2/leagues/8153-spgl-season-1-main-tier-swiss-tournament/groups

Welcome, to the Semi-Pro Gaming League!

BTW, entry is FREE. Invites are going out for previous registrations. Registration is now open for everyone! Make sure to PM SemiProGaming on the z33k page with your region so that we can place you properly!

Rules
No Pro players that make a living off salary or streaming allowed. B-team and below players are exempt from this rule.
Full set of rules can be found here.
RULES

This Tournament's Format
This event has a 32 man "Swiss Style" tournament that starts on August 8th and continues throughout the month of August. The top 8 players from each region will compete with the bottom 8 players from each region of the July tournament in September. Those matches will determine who moves up to the the 16 man invite, and who will be competing in the "Swiss Style" tournament next season.

Players ranking 9-24 will be get automatic invites to this tournament next season.

Players ranking 25-32 do not get invites to season 2 and are free to enter any future "open" events to try again for "invite" status.

Swiss Style Tournament Structure
The Swiss style tournaments are very similar to round-robin where every player would eventually play each other once. However, in Swiss tournaments, players with better records will compete against players with a similar record. There will also be no repeat of matches, so there is some leniency when it comes to the matches and win-loss record, but over all the better players come out on top and those needing work filter down.

About the SPGL
The SPGL is an organization dedicated to building the middle steps of eSports: that vital area between ladder hero and pro player. Based on 8 distinct regions in ALL of North America, players can compete in various scheduled events to work their way up the competitive tiers up into a national finals. Better rankings carry over to each season where you can advance up, or drop down in ranking.

League Structure
The SPGL has three different tiers for competitive play:
*Open - which is just what it says and is the lowest tier
*Main - This is the main tier and is the first instance of invite only. It is also the only tier where you can lose invite status
*Premier - This is the top tier and the only one you can win prize money in.
Each of the 8 regions in North America represented in the SPGL have ways of advancing up and down to the next corresponding tier.
Seasons last 3 months, and rank in tier carries over from one season to the next.
The SPGL also utilizes several different types of gameplay: double elimination, Swiss, and round-robin. These styles are utilized to judge a players skill over time, as opposed to just who is HOT one day, and cold the next.

If you did not register for the tournament that happened last weekend, you have to wait until Monday until it is opened to the rest of North America. It's just to give time to everyone one that got an invite code to check-in.

I think the zeek site is messed up again since it looks like each link goes to the same region's tourney. Just a heads up!

Nope, it is supposed to. The Swiss tournament signs up through a single page atm, that is why it is very important to PM me with what region you are from when it opens to general public on Monday.

And I expected a tournament with Swiss players ;-) .
Well, I like the Swiss tournament format, it is very player friendly. Each plyer plays all turns and after some time gets matched against players of similar skill.

Not the first time I've seen someone think that. I have found this tournament is a lot better for finding the best players and rewarding them. Round robin can get you some really bad results, especially if you do not play against every single player.

I used to play chess competitively as a child/youth. We nearly always had the swiss system. In these youth tournaments it is mainly about the players, and the tournament experience is really much better than an elimination format. And you cannot do round robin with 50+ players. The downside is that it is not very specatator friendly. There are less all deciding matches, which means less hype for a match. The other downside is that the admins have much more work due to the high number of matches. An advantage is that this format will much more likely be won by the strongest player.

Well, we get the advantage of deciding after the matches which to cover, something you don't get in chess matches. And there will be deciding matches, since top 8 is the location you want to be at, that gets you to the up/down matches for next season.

For this tournament? No. But success in this tournament allows you to start working up to the national finals, which is where the prize pool is, a $1,000 pool over the top 3 finishers in the national final.

Invite codes were sent out to people that did not get to play in the tournament that was done here: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=353343

Tomorrow morning I will be opening this up for everyone else so we can fill up all the regions.

And as stated, there is no prize pool for this event, however doing well in this will push you up to the higher tiers in this league where a prize pool is present.

It seems I need to clarify something. "Open for everyone" means you do not need an invite code now. However, if you played in last months tournament, you still can't play in this event. This Swiss style tournament will determine who gets to move up to the top tier and is invited for cash prizing, and who stays at the same level to compete next season for another shot at glory.
