Week 2 Preview

Round 5 started not with a whimper, but a bang. Not the kind of thunder that reverberates in the heavens, but nonetheless our introduction to the end of the season made a bold statement. That statement was "Brood War rules subtext: Proleague won't end without a bang".

As we discussed last week, Starcraft can be a cruel profession. One day you're Stork, winning Starleagues and ace matches, the next you struggle to win against s2 (a 'less than star' zerg).

These transformations exist all around us. A caterpillar grows butterfly wings as a newcomer takes down a starleague champion.

You could be any member of the ACE team. Each of them, a legend in his own rite, a Starleague title for over half the team members (sorry YellOw). Their transformation has been less elegant, while flashes of brilliance remain their average self struggles to keep up with the game as it is played now. Even RuBy and Much, who still showed promise as regular A-teamers in their house of origin have been lacking lately.

For HiyA the transformation is a full cycle. There was a period when he was capable ofall-killing of a competent team. That period was followed by a prolonged stretch wherein he battles mediocrity. This week he showed a bit of his old spark, and beat Flash in an ace game.

Perhaps the most significant of all, a team most known for having a questionable zerg lineup gave it their all and kicked ass. On the flip side, Stars fielded 4 zergs and lost against a CJ that fielded all 3 races.

Lets look at some other stats from this year.

Statisfaction
by Heyoka

In the past few weeks that I haven't been writing statisfaction, I've continued to think about numbers, graphs, charts, and other things I like to talk about to show the appearance of intelligence. There is a backlog of ideas now so its time to share anything of interest to you, my friends, the community.

The idea here is to get an idea of where the individual game wins are coming from for a team. I swore this was an original idea I had but apparently its common on Fomos. I did it slightly differently than the one I saw, instead of charting every game played this will only include the top several contributors, the requirement needed to be in it is having played 5 games in any round.

Take total game wins, break them up into how many each player got, and display it in the best kind of graph (hint: its pie). This isn't completely current as it doesn't include the first week of round 5.

None of it is particularly surprising. Flash, Jaedong, and Leta are in the same range for how much they win for their team. Oz's entire protoss lineup has 2% of their total wins. WeMade is impressively balanced, as is CJ and to a lesser extent STX. MBC is a solid 65% terran wins.

There are a few funny things that seem somewhat misrepresented. Bisu has a good percent of SKT's wins right now, which is in no way indicative of his current performance. RuBy has a bunch of game wins for ACE, but thanks to a 2-10 showing last round he also has a larger than normal portion of their losses. DarkElf shows up in ACE's graph and he doesn't play for them anymore (the same can be said about Luxury and UpMagic though their circumstances are less honorable).

Overall a pretty good way to 'aid in chin-scratching endeavors' as Snowdrift once said.

With that out of the way, here is how teams did in the last week.

Week 1 on Liquipedia

Grape had his TV debut this week. You might recognize him as the b-teamer our own ret took some games from last year. He didn't fare so well here either, losing to RuBy in a PvT.

Of particular note, the week opened with Snow beating another terran, and going on to take down Kwanro later (in an amusing game where Kwanro tried to base trade then refused to leave long after he surely knew he had no shot of coming back from). We keep touting him as someone to watch and it will keep happening while he is tearing up the league. Backho saw his return after months of no TV time, and promptly lost to Flash. One can assume the terran monster was a little upset about what happened last time they met.

The most important aspect here is how these results changed fantasy propects, however.

Fantasy Proleague
by IntoTheWow

A new round begins. New hopes, new chances, new player picks.
The standings don't mean much yet, the first batch of trades is coming. What to do? Will I regret having (P)Bisu on anti? Is (P)BackHo back?

STANDINGS

SUMMARY

  • Pick me! Pick me!
Popular picks are a double edged weapon. They are usually the safest picks but at the same time don't set you team apart from the pack, earning you a decent spot but usually not that high. The most popular picks were kind of predictable:
    • (T)Sea: cheap, slumping, but decent player. High chances of acing. Disappointment Meter: Off the charts
    • (Z)EffOrt: OSL champion, 20 - 2 or so in his past games. What if he slumps again? So far, so good.
    • (P)Movie: I'm actually surprised at this one, since Snow was a popular pick as well. I guess he was just too cheap to skip him. Hopeful.
    • (Z)Action: upcoming, best new Z rookie. with hyvaa showing no signs of life, his chances of playing increase a lot. Promising.

  • Disposable Hero
In one of the latest interviews, SKT1's head coach explained that (P)Bisu didn't show up for the match since he was left at the team house cleaning toilets undergoing special training.
The interesting thing here is that despite having one of the largest fan-base, he's the most popular anti-team pick (649) almost doubling the second most popular anti team pick (Lomo, 358).

  • What? Your magikarp is evolving!
In their only match this week, Hwaseung OZ had to face KT. The score was 2-2 and every starcraft fan was peeing themselves in excitement, waiting for (Z)Jaedong vs (T)Flash to happen. OZ's coach threw the pokeball and to everyone's amusement, a fish came out. (T)Flash showed a sign of disappointment which would stay after the match was over.
(T)HiyA goes 2-0 and defeats Flash in an ace match, gaining 8 points in one day and a big trade value boost. 434 teams scream in agony.

  • Samsung Khan't
Samsung KHAN, a team with 2 of the strongest Protoss players. SKT, a team whose Zerg line-up has been laughed at many times. One, two and...three. SKT1 wins 3-0, all Zerg victories. (P)Bisu anti owners feel relief, (T)fantasy owners curse themselves, but not as much as anyone who picked anything from Samsung.

One would think that with a new round, teams would have time to adjust themselves. But no, all the trends from last round stay more or less the same in the first week of round 5. The only alarming result besides T1's mauling of Khan was (P)Kal losing 0-2. The (Z)Shine hate bandwagon is back, hop in.

See you all next week!

While individual results bring us what we all love, as reports our job is to bring you the trends. Big picture stuff. The happenings of an entire race, entire teams. Storylines. Drama.

Did you know Classic got only his second loss on TV this week? It was at the hands of Movie. His first loss was during last year's proleague season. To Flash. It was his first game on the big stage. He certainly is blossoming into a solid regular, though without specific flair it goes largely unregistered.

Back to the topic of a single all-encompassing view, 'in-depth guy' has noticed a few things and is interesting in sharing.

Hite SPARKYZ

SPARKYZ was hit hard by the match-fixing scandal, as four of its members, Yarnc, go.go, type-b and Justin, were suspects in the case. The former three admitted their wrongdoing and were dropped from the team, while Justin, a ring leader, was officially indicted along with "Mr. Ma" and has admitted his guilt on all counts. To top it all off, the team's head coach was dismissed -- the most highly-placed head to roll as a result of the scandal. With an A team of only six players at the end of Round 4, the team was a shell of its former self and it was even rumored that it might disband; a very unpleasant thought aside from fantasies involving Leta joining CJ.

Yet SPARKYZ hasn't become the second punching bag of Proleague, the new Air Force team, as they beat Woongjin Stars and ACE in the last weeks of Round 4 and MBC in their first match of Round 5. Leta went 4-0 in those three bouts, with notable victories over free and Sea. "Even though we’re in a difficult time right now, we need to work hard together to create a miracle," the team captain asserted in a post-match interview. With the Horangutan working his PvP magic, Puma ready and willing to cheese "for the team’s win" and rookies SungEun, 49[ScM] and 45[Name] added to the roster, new coaches Zeus and Side have their work cut out for them. Can they bring their team to new hites?

Sunken Break

Bisu

Although his fans were long in denial, things came to a head when Bisu was put on temporary leave in March. The mood was still optimistic since this was an obvious throwback to his trip to Thailand, which preceded one of the greatest watersheds in Starcraft progaming. But history can only repeat itself as a farce, and after netting a few wins in the earlier part of Round 4, Kim Taekyong is now on a five-game losing streak with losses to the likes of Lomo and Juni. The decline continues: on the bench but never sent out in SKT's match against STX, he didn't even appear during the team's recent match against Samsung Khan. Apparently the one-time Revolutionist is now undergoing special training at the team house. As SKT's star player, he's still guaranteed his outfit's full support, but will it be enough? With SKT Zergs on a tear and Best delivering better results, Bisu's spot on the roster is looking more irrelevant every day.

Both Sea and Light lost this week. A change in the team? Unlikely, but it embodies the troubles they have had for the last several weeks. Especially considering their total-win graph we began today's Proleague journey with.

We're big picture people though, you see. No reason to stop with two players when you can look at the entire league. That means it is time for...Proleague previews.

Week 2 Previews
by flamewheel

Hi folks, previews. Aren't they fun? Hopefully this in conjunction with IntoTheWow's FPL piece will help you make smart trades in the few hours that you have left. Either way, I'm pretty excited for the matches this week, so let's take a quick look:

Round 5, Week 2 Matches:

STX SouL vs

MBCGame HERO

Glancing at the matches this week, I see one of two things: balanced matches that could easily go to ACE, and one-sided all-you-can-rape buffets. Leaving out the third of the trio, now we just have the good and the bad. I won't go so far as to say that there's any "ugly." Normally I write about the matches that I think will be epic, but I'm going to look at the other side for a bit.

The Bad.

WeMade FOX vs
[image loading]
MBCGame HERO

(T)Sea is sucking, I'm sorry Yum Bo Sung, but you've been traded off my team this week. Maybe if you start playing better I'll put you back on, but as of now...
So yeah, fourth place FOX is dominating. Third place MBC is not. I'm bracing myself for this absolute slaughter, but I hope Sea can do it. I've already given up on (T)Light. (T)Midas is cute :3

Air Force ACE vs
[image loading]
KT Rolster

Need I talk about this one? Sorry ACE. Maybe you can practice for a Flash snipe in the Ace match again if it gets there >_>

CJ Entus vs
[image loading]
Samsung KHAN

CJ 3-0, since Coach Cho makes amazing decisions. You heard it here first, January's going to send (T)firebathero out and (hopefully) (T)sKyHigh will snipe him, since I haven't seen sKyHigh play in a while. Actually, it'll probably be (P)Snow that does the punishing, but he's got MST... Stork's going to get mauled by (Z)that freaky Alien dude, and while I'm hoping for some epic (P)JangBi storms, I don't see it happening for KHAN.

STX SouL vs
[image loading]
MBCGame HERO

You know, last round I was excited for this match. And then it went to Ace due to some tediously long matches... I'm looking at you, (T)FrOzen and (Z)HyuN. And then (Z)Peace was sent out. The hell? This time around, I don't think MBC is going to have the depth to stop STX and all its choices.

The Good
.

+ Show Spoiler +
Oooh, and you thought there was a link!

Hwaseung OZ vs
[image loading]
Woongjin Stars

I wonder a few things about this match: will (Z)Kwanro run into (Z)Jaedong? If he does, he'll get mauled. If not, he'll probably win. Will (Z)Princess see playtime? Many FPL players hope so. Will (P)BackHo destroy everyone in 2010 provide us with hilariously amusing/fail play? We all know how these matches turn out. Either Jaedong OZ loses 1-3 or takes the match 3-2. I'm hoping for the latter, with (Z)Princess winning in Ace!

Suck it, Killer.

Allllllllright, thats it for now. Games have already started this week, so be sure to check out if your favorite match happened. This coming week is sure to be full of exciting matches. At the very least, it will begin to answer the question about whether this proleague season shows true transformations or just aberrations within normal play. Hopefully it will lead to an answer if teams can truly change or if it was merely an illusion.

As always, enjoy the games! There will be less SC2 this week so what the hell else do you have to do?

This Proleague update was brought to you by Team Liquid's PL 2009-10 coverage team - heyoka, pangshai, l10f, snowdrift86, flamewheel, and IntoTheWow. Many thanks to keit as usual for the stellar graphics!

I am doing sucking so much balls at this FPL because I'm doing something different. Oh man. I hope it changes soon. Those pie charts made me hungry...

Great writeup though. Poor Sparkyz. I wonder what their morale is like D:
