GTX 460 768mb getting terrible fps

I recently built this computer in the hopes of finally being able to run sc2 at ultra. I was pretty heartbroken when I entered my first game and my fps hovered around 8 from the very outset. Here are the rest of my specs:

Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit
Phenom 955 x4 3.2ghz
4gb Corsair RAM
1920x1080 resolution

Yes I am running Ubuntu with wine, but I'm beginning to doubt the OS is the major problem. If this card got normal framerates on win7, Ubuntu would have to be cutting over 80% of its performance which I just don't think is happening.

Although there is another factor; I don't have access to the latest nvidia drivers with linux (the latest is 261.00 and I have 260.19.06). If 261.00 fixed a lot of things with sc2, maybe win7 is my best option.

So has anyone else experienced or heard of this problem on the 460? I can't determine whether my card just sucks or if I'm in dire need of windows.

Is it possible that your power supply isn't powerful enough?

those specs are similar to mine (probably even better), and I can run it on ultra smoothly using windows 7... so i'm willing to bet that it IS your OS

I'm running your exact specs, except I have Windows 7.

I'm running SC2 constantly at 60 fps. I may only be at High, but I really don't have any problems... if you play desert strike, that's a different story.

My PSU is 500 watts which is fine I think...

Okay then it probably is the OS. I had googled some pages about people having troubles getting the 460 to work for sc2 which made me nervous that my card was strugglin as well.

Also I didn't want to believe sc2 and wine were so incompatible because I didn't want to shell out the money for windows 7 xD ohhhh well

i'm all for open source and free software but if you're gonna be gaming on your pc (and there's no reason not to with that graphics card), you better damn get windows xD

It's most definitely your OS, A defective card, or Bad case/Cooling.
i get a decent 30 fps in max food 1v1's in ultra

but now a days i use to to play Starbattle in 100+fps
Same Exact processor but at 3.6 ghz, GPU, Ram and Resolution with 600 watt

but with "Free" Windows 7 ultimate.
it's Almost too Easy...

It's not an Ubuntu issue per se. The issue is wine. Are you using the latest dev build? Whenever running modern games with wine I would always suggest using the dev build as opposed to stable.

Yeah, I have a Gigabyte GTX460 1000mb and it works like a charm, so I can't really help you there. But I hope you figure out the problem!

I have the same card, I stream at 1280x720 with everything on low. No you cannot do 1080p + Ultra graphics on this card its a budget card. I also own a 1GB model in my home in Canada and it can ALMOST do ultra at 1080p but it still cuts frames. Even then I live to stream/vod so its impossible.

Either lower your resolution too either 720p or to keep 16 1600x1024 is between 720-1080 and you get the same screen real estate.

Running Starcraft2 in Wine

Make sure you are running the latest wine version.

You can modify wine settings to greatly improve the performance.
Winehq has many details and to maximize your fps you can test out several things from there

My settings below:

+ Show Spoiler +

Settings
+ Show Spoiler +

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D]
"DirectDrawRenderer"="opengl"
"Multisampling"="disabled"
"UseGLSL"="disabled"
"VertexShaderMode"="hardware"

You can edit these settings using regedit (aka "wine regedit" ).
The simplest way to use these settings is to save the above spoiler into a text file "sc2.reg".
Then load these settings using "wine regedit sc2.reg"

You can of course use different settings for different games, the above method will however modify the default settings wich is probably ok ( but should still be noted).

Added
Note: you will not get the same performance in ubuntu that you get from windows7, but you should still be able to play using medium settings I guess.
(If I modify wine settings, I can play 1600x1050 with medium settings with decent fps using rougly the same cpu (but my gpu is a geforce 275)).

Yeah I have an x955 and an Asus GTX460 with 4 gb of low latency ddr 1333 ram, and I run the game so perfectly, and can stream, encode video of it, save video if it in real time, at ultra. It's most likely because of Wine.

Also I got a 700 Watt Power Supply. And it's 80+gold, so it's efficiency means it's utilizing about the same power given out to the components potentially as a 800-900 watt of regular old style power supply.

Also don't be afraid of it. Windows 7 is the best release of Windows I have seen since Windows 98.

It's well worth shelling out the money for windows 7, that will most definitely help you. Your processor/ram/video card is more then sufficient to run sc2 very well so no problems there, also updating drivers can be quite helpful so go ahead and do that if you decide to switch over to windows 7.
