So, you probably have heard of the fact that WTL Winter did a league merch run, and sold out 1000 in 40 minutes.

Here is the content of the merch drop (~$47).

Certificate signed by scboy;
Themed poker set featuring top league players;
Invictus Gaming player badges;
WTL mousemat;
WTL winner's trophy theme medal set;
WTL mug;

All proceedings of the merch drop (300K CNY, ~$47K) will be added to the WTL Winter prize pool:

250K CNY (~$39K) will be added to the league prize pool, spread proportionally among all teams;
10K CNY ($1.6K) each for seasonal MVP, best Terran, best Zerg and best Protoss player award winners;
10K CNY ($1.6K) for best on stream celebrations (exact amount of winners pending)

More merch will be available for subsequent seasons for extra funding for the league, with the ultimate goal being increasing the total prize pool to 1M CNY ($160K) per season.

Good stuff and good news!

This is one of those measures they had planned for a long time to support the league, right? Super cool the see it become reality.

SCboy says he will open sales again and wants to make them available to the world as well, nothing set in stone quite yet though.

If I am reading this right, the proceeds of each merchandise sale, $47 USD, has been put back into the prize pool.

But those items cost money, and there is also the cost of shipping, right? Or is $47 the net profit made from the merchandise sales, and the profit is being put back into the prize pool? If $47 is the cost of the items and shipping, SCBoy is actually losing money to do this (not to mention the time and labor invested to do this, which in itself costs money).

Either way, the World Team League is a great way to support the pro players and give them extra money to support their livelihood as pro SC2 players. So a big thanks for SCBoy for supporting the SC2 pro scene with the World Team League

It's not net profit but sale price. The organizer absorbs the material costs themselves and put all the money they gathered back into the prize pool in order to support teams. I'd say it's kinda like a way of donating, while supporters could get some souvenirs either.

Correct. SCboy is basically losing $28K doing this. Alternatively, you can see this as the community contributing half of the additional prize pool, the other half scboy added themselves.

That is awesome to hear!

Also this is a sick set. Like I'm sure a bunch of people, I would be super excited to purchase future iterations of that set at much highest prices than $47 (assuming it can be shipped outside of China).

Go scboy!!
