The German programmer Tobi "Lorax" Lutke is known to be a huge StarCraft fan and even competed himself in BW (winning a tournament is one of his proudest achievements).
He was part of the team that built Ruby on Rails and went on to found Shopify in Canada, resulting in him becoming a billionaire at young age.
Just recently he offered Select an internship at Shopify on grounds of his progaming career and achievements in SC2.
Now he just doubled the HSC XX prize pool. He is active on reddit and might use TL, so thank you Tobi!

awesome, we have the most loyal/passionate fans, bar none

Didn't see it here at first, this is so awesome, wow.
|
So awesome - astounding to see the passion he still has for Starcraft and his generosity is so appreciated. Would not be surprised to see Shopify's name as a sponsor for future events!
|
So 2€ for the winner of the waterslide competition? Nice.

Billionaire starcraft fans, best starcraft fans.

If I was a blizzard employee I would be all over this guy trying to get a Shopify sponsorship.
Btw, long live rich starcraft fans that keep streams alive, double prize pools and create chinese teams for CTC.

After all the speculation about the scene, this is great news, Starcraft people, the best people

Everyone says that they'd spend money on esports if they got rich, this guy's actually doing it.

This is awesome and shows the power of the Starcraft community~!

Things like this give me hope that humanity will not drown in its own filth

Great to see such a generosity from the Shopify CEO. Funny enough they had a SC2 team competing at a Corporate Team League for charity that my company also participated. We didn't play their team due to Swiss format but they were a strong team based on the result.
Kudos to Shopify.

This is just absolutely incredible. Thank you so much, Tobi!

HuK also made a contribution before this, 3000$ for "The Game of the Tournament". Maybe make a TL news post about that too if you missed it

Yah, that´s right, I think HuK deserves some love, too Thanks HuK for still loving Sc2 and donating a huge amount of $$ for a "best game award!"

Eh, I wouldn't be surprised if it's from his personal funds. He seems to have a genuine passion for the game. Though, yeah, doesn't make him a great human being just because of it

Only 20000? That is a shame. Think about what you have on your bank account and what 0.002% of that would be.

Net worth does not mean he has a billion on a bank account somewhere. Also do you know how he spends his money apart from donating a million for planting trees recently? Who knows how much of his money goes into good causes and different projects of all kinds. If you want him to spend more, why should that even go into an esports event that does nothing for the world and is just entertainment in the end?
He has zero obligation to do anything for the sc community.
