Definitely something not good happened to him forcing leave right before upcoming WCS in two weeks.

He gave notice a month ago which hopefully means that he just found a new opportunity rather than anything else. Of course it definitely hurts for WCS to lose one of its 'champions'.

The first sentence said he put in his notice a month ago.
eh, why do I get the vibe that you are one of those people who want a Vietnam war or something worse to happen..

Definitely sad to see him go, it is a "positive" that he left his notice before all this drama with China

Best of luck in the future

The inventor of the term snowflakes was a gay millennial writer, who coined it to mock right wing asshats.

This is looking worse and worse. By now my main hope is that blizzard has decided to outsource the whole thing to ESL, which is why they don't need people at blizzard anymore.

Are you guys for real?

Anyhow, it seems to be a big loss. With Marc Olbertz and Kim Phan also leaving the boat this year on top of a bunch of community manager, it's gonna be hard to find someone with experience to stear the boat.

Don't worry. SC2 will be made open source and everyone will switch to Starbow.

Looking at his LinkedIn profile shows he moved to a different company. Still doesn't sound reassuring though, as he probably expects SC2 e-sports to either cease its operations completely or be cut down significantly in 2020.

To be fair, that's pretty much what everyone expects. I highly doubt that we'll have another year of WCS/GSL/Blizzcon.

Allot of key people in Esports ( none gaming developers) has either jumped ship or been fired. Guess Blizzard really is cutting down on Esports content in general throughout the entire company.

Just want to give context on the gaming industry and how it's relevant to Blizzard.

I think with this Warchest business, competitive SC2 will stay afloat at least one more year.

Then maybe WC3 Reforged will take over the RTS section in esports. We'll see

I expect WCS to end this year and W3 Reforged will take over as soon as it's out(if it ever gets out).

If ESL comes back in SCBW it is the end.

I don't know about running tournaments for a game played by 20 people.

Esport has been pretty much moved to Activision with the moves at Blizzard + shutting down MLG.

Depends very much on Blizzard I think. If they announce a WCS'ish system with WCS'ish prizepools, a lot of players would be tempted to switch and probably other sponsors then too

Wow, lots of doom and gloom in this thread. Maybe he did so well at his job he got noticed by someone else and took a better offer? Some new blood in the position could also be a good thing!

But for how long? Unfortunately the RTS genre is pretty dead these days. Warcraft 3 Reforged is probably going to be a big hit in the first weeks and maybe months but I really can't see this game becoming the next SC2.

Yes, many are understandably jittery. Let's all hope it is that simple and not a symptom of something else. Some variation of Occam's Razor could apply: the simplest explanation is likely the right one.

I'm glad Adrian Harris had the foresight to point out that he gave notice a month ago - otherwise some might be (rightly) having conniption fits. We all read the tea leaves to interpret the state of the union in different ways, but we all share a love for the game.

Depends very much on Blizzard I think. If they announce a WCS'ish system with WCS'ish prizepools, a lot of players would be tempted to switch and probably other sponsors then too

But for how long? Unfortunately the RTS genre is pretty dead these days. Warcraft 3 Reforged is probably going to be a big hit in the first weeks and maybe months but I really can't see this game becoming the next SC2.

The only problem RTS has, it translates bad to console. People claimed RTS is dead for a while now and here we are. Still loving RTS

Besides Blizz there are a few interesting projects developed right now. Out of the top of head there is Iron Harvest and A year of Rain

Let's be real, W3R isn't going to suddenly light everything on fire. It's way more likely that SC2 being the final bastion of RTS esports before it inevitably fizzles out in the next year or two, if not even sooner.

Uh, no? While I don't think that W3R will overcome SC2(unless Blizzard invests some money) I don't think that removing support off SC2 will kill it and all the e-sport will be suddenly dead. Sure, it will be way smaller, but dead? Don't think so, BW didn't die either...
I imagine France should be able to take this unless Lilbow is busy practicing for Starcraft III. | KadaverBB is my fairy ban mother.

It won't be dead for sure. The Chinese scene will surely support it further down the line, but like BW currently, it won't be the same in terms of mainstream attention, financial investment and long term sustainability. My point is W3R isn't going to be the successor of SC2 as a premium tier esports RTS that Blizzard very actively promotes and supports long term. I do, 100% hope to be proven wrong.

Oh yeah, in that sense I agree.

Of course there will be RTS games, no doubt about that. I was referring to a competitive scene. With players traveling around the globe, team-leagues etc. I believe that the competitive scene in the genre is pretty dead, aside from a couple of community-cups here and there.

I can only asume that the business-lizzards are about or at least think about to cut WCS like they did with heroes.
Progaming fto them is promotion. And why should they promote a game that has no competitors but the remake of a 2000s game by blizzard ?

It's not looking good, but several signs point towards Blizz not giving up on SC entirely. I think 2020 is still good / maybe some budget cuts.
But I would still be surprised that if they would just give the Hots treatment to the SC e-sport scene. Not impossible, but at this point i would say not that likely.
