The round-of-eight group stage of WCS Winter has concluded, determining the players and the seeding for the final playoff gauntlet. Six players from the Europe and Americas regions will compete in gauntlet style playoffs (similar to SSL or Proleague), with the winner claiming a first place prize of $12,000. The playoffs will see the previously online competition move to a live setting (details TBA), and is scheduled to be played during April 6-7.

Europe's RO8 round-robin saw Global Champion Serral's aura of invulnerability fade even further after IEM and WESG, as he suffered 2-0 losses to rising star Reynor as well HeroMarine. #1 seed Reynor is in prime position to get take care of unfinished from 2018's WCS Montreal, where he nearly ended Serral's WCS Circuit reign in the grand finals.

WCS Americas had more predictable RO8 results as Scarlett and NeebNeeb came out on top of the Americas field, but China's TIME threw his hat in the ring as a title contender with a 2-1 victory over Neeb. Meanwhile, America's Astrea continued his quiet underdog run by slipping into the playoffs in sixth place over more seasoned competitors in Probe and puCK

Hope Reynor can close it out, the kid has a bright future ahead of him. Serral honoring Blizzcon tradition by slumping in the new year, even getting 2-0'd by multiple foreigners. Heromarine the dark horse, but how do you lose to Lambo while beating Reynor/Serral? EU playoffs should be pretty good.

Time shaking things up in AM is cool too.

Dang, I was really hoping Puck would make it through. He definitely didn't play his best games this tourney, unfortunately.

Reynor's gameplans against Serral were so cool, some of the best ZVZs i've seen.
Serral under-preformed to be sure, but i still like his chances, I dont see him losing to Heromarine in a bo5, despite the group stage.
and in the grand finals, I think he'll be prepared for Reynor, or at least better prepared. It was clear, he really dindt do anything special against Reynor, just his run of the mill standard ZvZ. and Reynor kinda used one of his silver bullets.
The ling-lurker strat was amazing to watch, but I dont think it would work a second time, it's not the new zvz meta, i dont think, it was a one of a kind snipe-strategy

Reynor vs. Serral was very exciting to watch. The casters even said this was a standout series. I want to see Ling-Lurker more often!
Stopped watching ESL content in 2022 when the company was acquired by Savvy Gaming Group. Also object to sponsorships by the U.S. Air Force. Thanks for the lively discussions about sportswashing. StarCraft II is not for me anymore.

Great to see Reynor doing so well,TIME coming third in NA and Astrea advancing to playoffs . Overall, I found the round-robin format quite good from a spectator viewpoint.

Hoping for two TvZ finals: HeroMarine vs Reynor and Scarlett vs TIME.

Map score is the first tie breaker over head to head? That's kind of odd.

Map score first is the most common way to break ties I'm pretty certain.

Don’t worry, Neeb will have a chance to get even.
I root for Euro Zergs, NA Protoss* and Korean Terrans. (Any North American who has beat a Korean Pro as Protoss counts as NA Toss)

Maybe. Blizzard seems to like that (IEM/WCS Winter) while others (WESG) preferred head to head as the first tie breaker.

In normal sports, head to head is ALWAYS the first tie breaker.

Many sports break ties on goal/point difference, which is the equivalent of map difference.

Depends, big groups/leagues tend to goals while smaller groups usually use the head to head, but that's sport to sport different.
I imagine France should be able to take this unless Lilbow is busy practicing for Starcraft III. | KadaverBB is my fairy ban mother.

With regards to SC2, I think map score is a lot more fair than H2H, and map score rewards consistency. Taking a look at Scarlett versus Neeb, Neeb won the H2H, but I wouldn't say he played better overall than Scarlett. Neeb outside of his loss to Time took 4 losses in six wins, whereas Scarlett only took 2 losses in six wins, which means that Scarlett played 4 perfect series to Neeb's 2 perfect series.

Read on twitter that Serral has been ill for some time, probably affected him a bit, how much I have no idea.
Reynor did look like a beast, but seems there are terran builds that are good vs zerg atm so we'll see what Heromarine can do.
