Though many saw Maru's victory as a foregone conclusion, it was still a relief for South Korean esports fans who saw their vaunted League of Legends team take silver after losing to China in the gold medal match.

No. What is this rule? Gold medalists can skip military service? Yes for Football players. South Korea with Heung Min Son from Tottenham Hotspur is in Grandfinal (vs Japan) now. South Korea won 4 years ago and all players were exempted from Military. Son didn't attend (Leverkusen said no to him). This rule exists since WC 2002.

No. What is this rule? Gold medalists can skip military service? It is a very hot topic right now in Soccer world because Son Heung Min of S. Korea team career relied on winning the Asian Game gold medal for male soccer. https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/aug/31/more-than-a-game-not-just-gold-on-line-for-son-heung-min-in-asian-games-final This is because there is a law for military exemption if athletes can win medals in a competition where all type of sports can compete in (so no World Cup or specific sport championship). I think it's written in the law/rule that it has to be bronze medal up for Olympic or gold medals for Asian Games. Since this Asian Games has Starcraft 2 as one of the sport competed, I was wondering whether Maru would be eligible to apply for exemption or not. But it's in the experimental sport category so it might not count.

Kinda crappy that eSports not given same treatment as other sports though, makes no sense in esports. games are too short-lived, most games lives about 2-3 years, few games like sc2 live a little longer. football etc do exists for 100 years and are going to exist next 100 years.

No. What is this rule? Gold medalists can skip military service? Yes, people who win Olympic medals are exempted from military service except some token basic training for a few weekends. This was expanded to those who win gold medals at the Asian Games. Maru doesn't get exemption because it was a demonstration sport, not a medal sport. Maru could lawyer up and press the issue, although the general principle is bringing pride to Korea or raising Korea's international profile, and maybe StarCraft 2 doesn't do it that much. The hard part is not pressing so hard that he looks like he's trying to dodge service but argue that he's legitimately better for Korea as a pro-gamer than a soldier (and this is more like convincing your mom, not a bunch of people on a forum dedicated to the game).
