With IEM Katowice in the books, StarCraft returned to Korea for the first two quarterfinal matches of GSL Season 1. First up was a ZvZ between (Z)soO and (Z)Scarlett, with (P)Stats and (P)Classic taking the stage right after.

(Wiki)2018 Global StarCraft II League Season 1

Quarterfinal 1: soO 3 - 0 Scarlett
  • Game 1: soO and Scarlett both opened with 13/12's in game one, though neither was able to do any economic damage. Both went into two base spires, with similar timings on their thirds, but the game turned into a stalemate as both players amassed mutalisks. Scarlett made the decision to drone up and attempt to take a fourth base. Still on three bases, and with a much larger zergling count, soO ran his lings into Scarlett's fourth and then her base, while his mutalisks threatened the third base. The fourth died and so did 25 drones in Scarlett's main and natural. Her economy ravaged, she left the game.

  • Game 2: Scarlett failed to do any damage with her pool first opening, giving soO a slight economic advantage that he parlayed into faster +1 ranged attack and speed for his roaches. Scarlett droned heavily on three bases, which allowed soO to attack and claim a slight worker lead. Scarlett attempted to add hydralisks to her composition, but soO stayed on roach/ravager, hitting with +2 while Scarlett was on +1. Biles landed all over Scarlett's army as soO went up 2-0.

  • Game 3: Scarlett used her early gas to get +1 carapace for her zerglings, but soO, behind almost ten workers, flooded zerglings into her natural, hitting before her speed had finished. Scarlett only lost five workers in the initial attack, but she canceled her baneling nest while soO allowed his to finish which set him up for a lethal second wave. Roaches came out for Scarlett, but there weren't enough. With no hope for a comeback, Scarlett conceded, sending soO to the semifinals.

Quarterfinal 2: Stats 3 - 2 Classic
  • Game 1: Classic opted for a faster expansion in game one after opening stalker/sentry. Stats opted for blink and a faster robotics facility. It all turned into a waiting game as both players macroed into chargelot/archon/immortal. Stats was the one that moved out though, taking a fight near Classic's third. He was able to win the encounter, giving him a 1-0 lead.

  • Game 2: Stats' proxy robo and gateway failed to do critical damage on Ascension to Aiur, partly because Classic's oracle and adepts forced defensive warpins in Stats' main and killed a lot of probes, weakening the attack. Stats set up a contain with sentries and stalkers, but lost more workers to a pair of oracles which forced him into more aggression instead of attempting to macro. Classic had a void ray and immortal against pure stalker/sentry by then, which made the hold an easy one. Stats tapped out, evening the series.
  • Game 3: Classic went for a two base all in with an immortal and a warp prism in game three. Stats held a double digit worker lead and blink when the attack hit, but he was never able to match Classic's stalker count and fell behind 2-1.
  • Game 4: Classic and Stats both opened stargate, with Stats going for three phoenixes then an oracle. They combined for nearly ten worker kills, but Classic's pair of oracles managed to kill 15 probes in reply. Classic had a worker lead and a faster third, but Stats had immortals in his composition and a forge spinning while Classic did not. Classic felt forced to attack Stats' third due to his upgrade disadvantage, but +2 finished in time for Stats and, combined with good prism micro, easily won him the fight. With very little left, Classic tapped out soon after as Stats' counterattack destroyed his army.
  • Game 5:Three phoenixes and a pair of adepts chipped away at Stats' worker count, who took the more exposed third on Neon Violet Square. Both players macroed up over 130 supply, with Stats making the first move as he crashed into Classic's fourth base with a higher archon count and less immortals. Distracted by zealots running into his natural, Classic lost the fight and his fourth base. Stats gave him no time to recover. A little more pressure broke Classic as Stats took the match 3-2.

(Z)soO and (P)Stats advance to the first semifinal on March 14th.

Matches 3 ((P)Zest vs (Z)Dark) and 4 ((T)Maru vs (P)sOs) of the Round of 4 will be played on Saturday, Mar 10 4:00am GMT (GMT+00:00)

If my count is right SoO overcome INnovation and is now the second players with the most GSL semifinal with 7, MVP is still first with 8. He will have the chance to became the player with most final if when he beat Stats.

According to TL predictions, Stats should've been out of GSL in the round of 32. FeelsGoodMan

He already has more finals (6) than MVP (5) or Inno (4)

Mvp was in six, won 4 of them. He lost to MMA and Life in GSL finals.

Mvp won 3 GSLs and one Korea + World Allstar thingy, so I guess that Fango didn't count the Korea vs the World one as a real GSL final.

Let's just call it Code S finals to clarify.
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

I wonder why Mvp GSL vs the world counts as a GSL for him but it never does for Inno. Fanboys need to prop up his image or something?

Because it was labelled a GSL then by GSL itself. I agree it's silly, doesn't count for Zest either, but it is what it is.

So when GSL was called WCS Korea it does also not count as a GSL win? The labeling is the important part?

Whatever, it's really silly as you said and what counts is if it was a Code S or not. And soO was in the most Code S finals.

It was held by GOM so it counts? I dunno, I don't decide the general consensus. All I know is GOM made a G5L trophy for Mvp in case he beat Life, because the community had agreed he'd won four GSLs.

Personally I don't really care, I'd just like a bit of consistency.

Oh yeah that trophy was sick.

I also think we need consistency, so we just have to add Code S I think. So Mvp was in 6 GSL finals, but soO was in 6 Code S finals and that's more impressive.

Of course Mvp > soO since he actually won finals .

Stats is the most solid and well rounded protoss of all time IMO.

Great army positioning and micro int hese battles. The two losses seemed mostly build order related.

Weekender/korea vs the world style events don't count. They aren't nearly as fair or competitive as a Code S. People only think they are because it has GSL in the name.

Code S is what people refer to when they say "X won GSL".

So, if we only count Code S; what about the open seasons? Do we take them them away as well? What about the Super Tournament, that Polt won? Is that gone as well? This tournament happened in a time, when GSL was still young and we didn't know, that a clear Code-S/Code-A-structure would continue to exist for 7 years.

GSL vs World is considered a "real" GSL, because it was seen as such, when it happened. It was considered as important as a Code-S-win, when it happened. Describing it as something minor is just wrong, if you consider the historical context.

After all, isn't elevating something because it has "Code S" in the name the same thing as elevating something because it has "GSL" in the name?

GSL vs World is considered a "real" GSL, because it was seen as such, when it happened. It was considered as important as a Code-S-win, when it happened. Describing it as something minor is just wrong, if you consider the historical context.

After all, isn't elevating something because it has "Code S" in the name the same thing as elevating something because it has "GSL" in the name?

You're missing the point. It's nothing to do with the name. Being called Code S is no different to being called WCS korea, or GSL open season or whatever. The point is, when you say someone "won GSL" it means they won a particular season. That's what matters.

When Innovation plays in GSL he's labelled with three gold medals, not four. When Zest plays he's labelled with two etc. Afreeca don't include GSLvsTW and GSL world championship events for a reason.

Random weekend tournaments shouldn't be included. Gom/Afreeca have run plenty of those over the years (GSL blizzard cup, Hot6 cup, GSL vs the world events, Super tournament, GSL world cup etc). Just because some of them have GSL in the name doesn't mean they carry the same prestige as Code S (or similar).
Zest, sOs, PartinG, Dark, and Maru are the real champs. ROOT_herO is overrated. Snute, Serral, and Scarlett are the foreigner GOATs
