Today, Intel announced plans to bring amazing gaming experiences to PyeongChang ahead of next February’s Olympic Winter Games. As an extension of Intel’s Worldwide TOP Partnership and with support from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Intel will deliver two distinct gaming experiences to Korea in the lead up to PyeongChang 2018: the Intel® Extreme Masters PyeongChang esports tournament featuring one of the most celebrated esports titles of all time, Blizzard Entertainment’s “StarCraft® II,” and a separate exhibition featuring Ubisoft’s action-sports title “Steep™ Road to the Olympics,” the official licensed game of the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018.

Intel Extreme Masters PyeongChang, an extension of the Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) brand produced in partnership with ESL, will be open to any player, at any level via global online qualifiers, which will take place in November. A live qualifier event will also take place in Beijing in December between the top two qualifiers from China, with the winner moving on to compete against the rest of the field in PyeongChang in the lead up to the 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

Too bad there are no suspense, we all know who will win.

Is this IEM Gyeonggi replacement (prizepool etc) ? So we have as many events as 2017.

We can thank Mike Morhaime i guess.

So, how are the qualifiers ? And seeds ?

Sounds quite similar to IEM Gyeonggi. Which is good, I liked that tournament.

Great news!
I hope the global online qualifiers don't collide with HomeStoryCup, though.
And I wonder, if the qualifier will be on the new balance patch...

They cant possibly be doing it during HSC as several Koreans will be there, but they might do it during WESG EU finals. I assume the global qualifier will be in Korea so it will be extremely difficult for best EU players to participate in November. If its on the new patch, players attending Blizzcon and HSC will have very little time to practice anything. They should at least move the qualifier to December to make it reasonable.

It says "the best players in the world", so why talk about the EU ?

I assume Dark and Stats are not participating either? You got some strong ignorant bias.

I mean skillwise, not on a bo3 zvz.

Seriously, TY, Stats, Dark, Rogue, Cure, INno, herO, Gumiho, soO, Neeb, Maru, sOs, Byun, Classic, Solar, Byul, aLive win him in a bo50.

Soul 2-0ed him 2weeks ago, is Soul better than Elazer ? No.

Seriously? Stats, Byul, aLive, sOs, herO, SoO, Solar, Classic, Cure would most likely lose in a bo50. Dark, Rogue, Maru, Neeb hard to tell, he would most likely lose to Inno, Ty, Byun, Gumiho

Strength is uselss. "Better" is also uselss. The money earned by the strength only matters.

Soul win against Elazer at small tournament doesn't matter, But Elazer win against Dark at the biggest tournament really matters.

I feel like people are making a big enough deal about this event. Of course more details would be nice but I have a feeling this is going to be a really cool event.

Hell, this is on the Olympic website. It's a big deal!

The general media reaction to this is going to be pretty hilarious. Actually...the general public reaction is going to be pretty hilarious as well.

I think that was super common during WCG.

I recall that's what made WCG 2012 so ridiculous for Dota, they had LoL casters casting Dota 1 + Dota 2 while the Dota caster was drafted to go cast FIFA.

For me this is not a "normal" event for the usual sc2 community. It is the first time AFAIK that and esport is going to have an event so closely related with the Olympic movement. It is a BIG deal for e-sports, and even bigger for sc. All the community should try really hard to make this a success.

This thread should be featured, as a minimum.
