After TvT victories over (T)TY and (T)ByuN respectively in the Round of 8, (T)GuMiho and (T)Maru met in the first semifinal of Season 2 to determine who would represent their race in the finals.

GuMiho opened the series by proxying a pair of barracks. Reapers came out two by two and, while Maru temporarily pushed them back with a cyclone, he had already lost ten workers. The follow up effort was enough put GuMiho up 1-0.

It was Maru who proxied on Odyssey. Although he didn't notch an outright kill, the addition of a cyclone and marines to his reapers was enough to cancel GuMiho's natural. Both players went for banshees from there, but only Maru’s were effective. Maru widened his lead with double digit worker kills while GuMiho marshalled a marine/tank force. When GuMiho finally moved out Maru had more than enough to answer and earn his first victory.

Maru opened command center first in game three, but it was GuMiho who executed the first offensive move, killing 11 workers while putting Maru's production under siege. Maru managed to even the worker count with a multipronged attack, but he lost too much of his army in the process. Up on supply, GuMiho punished Maru’s aggression with attack after attack. Maru kept hemorrhaging workers until he had no choice but to tap out.

GuMiho went for proxy two rax once again which morphed into a proxied tank and reactored marine push when his reapers failed to gain traction. Maru pushed out, killing the tank and canceling the starport. The cloaked banshees follow up prompted a quick concession from GuMiho.

Both players opened with cloaked banshees in game five. But while Maru's was proxied, GuMiho's was scouted. Maru was able to get minimal damage done but both players reached three bases on even supply. GuMiho ratcheted up the pressure from there, though, taking advantage of his superior upgrades. Maru held strong for a time, but finally buckled. Down multiple bases and nearly 70 supply Maru left the game to put GuMiho ahead 3-2.

Maru proxied two barracks at the watch tower on Whirlwind, but GuMiho discovered them with a scouting scv. He built two barracks of his own back at home and even managed to kill Maru's first two reapers without losing any of his own. From there it was a foregone conclusion. GuMiho simply rallied to Maru's main with a superior reaper count, giving the Jin Air Terran no choice but to cede the match. The 4-2 victory makes GuMiho the first finalist in GSL Season 2. He will wait in the finals for the winner of (P)Classic vs (Z)soO to be played later in the week.

I hope soO will win against him because he eliminated TY+Maru

But if the finals are soO vs Gumiho the story can be beautiful on both sides

Either one of Classic or soO will have no problem taking down GuMiho. For soO in particular, this is a golden opportunity to finally get that GSL trophy.

Gumiho would be a beatable opponent for soO in the final but I don't think soO's gonna get past Classic.

'King Kong' is exactly why this is such a golden opportunity. Gumiho's TvZ is crap compared to the Terrans you'd expect to see in the finals. He's the easiest opponent soO will ever get (in a finals).

As long as soO doesn't throw suicidally hard, the trophy is his for the taking.

GuMiho is 16-6 in maps and 6-1 in series against soO this year so I think he is favoured if soO advances

GuMiho's statistic vs soO is far more relevant. He beat soO in four Bo5s recently. Whether they're online or not doesn't matter, it shows that GuMiho knows how to play against soO and has successfully done so in the recent past.

16-6, 6-1 is one-sided enough that it shouldn't matter none of it was offline.

Online results count for something, but I'm inclined to discount them compared to GSL results. Quantity vs quality I suppose.

Can't fault you for weighting differently though.

yes he has experience, but bad experience. every single finals he was in, his enemy came out with something he had no answer against.

Of course he does, Gumigod in TvT is a beast!

Would love to see the Liquibet stats for this one.
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

GuMiho knows how to prepare for a finals. just ask MMA, Min, CoCa, Ryung and Puzzle... in the following season, he scored a 3-kill to win another GSTL, and it probably would have been an all-kill if they sent him out first.

I'd only favor Classic/soO for finals experience. There's always the chance Gumiho just mentally crumbles like ByuL. He's never been in a position to win a tournament of this level despite being around since the beginning.

In current form though...I think Gumiho is favored against either of them. He's looking excellent lately.

Gumiho is in good form currently, but he has beaten a grand total of 1 notable Zerg/Protoss on his way to the finals (ByuL). TvT has hard-carried him this far.

Classic on the other hand recently defeated TY, the best TvP player in the world, in both GSL and SSL.

If soO is his opponent it gets a little more doubtful. On the one hand Gumiho has a good online record. On the other, his TvZ is terrible compared to say INnoVation who will be soO's practice partner, and soO beat Maru this season and TY last season, both of whom have better TvZ.

Id favour Classic, but when he's in form like he is currently, I'd favour him against any terran to be honest.
GuMi has good tvp though, he should be able to produce an interesting finals against Classic.

soO is interesting, gumi's dominated soo online, Soo's got a lot of pressure on him to finally win but he does have the experience, and i don't rate Gumi's tvz that highly..but i can't see it being a 4-0 or 4-1 to soO either.

I like very, very, very, very, very few Terrans, but GuMiGod is one of them.

GO GUMI! I mean, I hope soO or Classic wins, but I won't shed a tear if the Towel Terran gets himself a Code S trophy.

I'd favor Classic over GuMiho in the finals. Classic is the best preparation player left in SC2, and when he's in form (as he seems to be), his ceiling is immensely high.

Not sure how 100% true that is...i still remember that halluc push he used vs ty on catallena

That was for 1 game (and in 2015, in LotV he's really not excelled at it). I believe Olli means preparing for longer series, and Classic is excellent at that.

Yup. Whenever Classic has time to prepare for a series or group he excels and shows up very well prepared for his opponents' map choices, strategies and playstyles. He's really really good at that and always has been.

I wonder if anyone will realize that the final two news posts of the season will be written by a different person than all the rest.

I wanted Maru to advance, but in a series consisting of primarily proxies, there is no true winner.

GuMiho has been discounted all throughout his journey and he kept winning. So I think he has just as good a shot to win as Classic and Soo.

I honestly can't favor any of the 3 to win, all even chances if I was a betting man. I know Soo keeps getting 2nd place but i think this time he wont be nervous anymore... so what if he gets 6th 2nd place

king kong doesn't stand a chance in the finals, sorry

'King Kong' is exactly why this is such a golden opportunity. Gumiho's TvZ is crap compared to the Terrans you'd expect to see in the finals. He's the easiest opponent soO will ever get (in a finals).

As long as soO doesn't throw suicidally hard, the trophy is his for the taking.

gumiho has bot better career and recent form stats according to aligulac vs zerg than maru.

that and he seems to be a tough personal match up for soo. i don't think gumiho worries particulary much about soo tbh.

Yeah....not gonna rehash the same argument for the third time. If you are curious, read the earlier pages and the "Season 2 2017 Semi Finals - Day 1" thread, it's been thoroughly covered.

If Classic wins this GSL which will most likely happen, will he officially be recognized as the most successful Protoss of all time with 2 GSL and 1 SSL ?

Behind Zest and MC I'd say. Arguably behind sOs as well, though that depends on your criteria.

I think those you can debate, depending on how highly you value Korean tournaments. Rain, despite obviously being an incredible player, has an odd lack of results showing for his reputation.

How can Classic be behind Zest (2gsl) and MC (2gsl) if he wins this one ? I mean 2 GSL and 1 SSL are huge since Korean value GSL > SSL > all

For Rain's accomplishments, look at this.

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/starcraft-2/483325-greatest-players-of-all-time-part-2

For understanding why Zest and MC are above Classic, look at this.

http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/482944-the-process-of-creating-the-top-15-greatest-list

I didn't include team league, so if you want to include that, then Rain is certainly above Classic in team leagues.

by that logic it would be Sniper>soO and Seed>sOs. There's more to it than just the number of Starleague wins.

No, SoO will dismantle classic and go on to get his second place. SoO will finish as the second best Zerg player ever and the second most successful sc2 player of all time.

Given that I liquibet soO in the season 1 finals and mod for him on twitch it should be obvious who I'm rooting for. Let's hope he wins for if no other reason than so he's in a good mood when we meet.

Much thanks to you, the writeups are sadly underappreciated but so important towards constructing a narrative and building hype. Still think the ones in like 2013 were the best though....

The amount of time that goes into writing them is scary. It's can be hard to describe linear, sometimes dull gameplay in an exciting, fluid, dynamic manner, but I think people appreciate it. TvT in particluar is a challenge . Without being spruced up it would just read: player a drops, player b sieges, player a counters, player b drops, ad nauseum. When a game goes on for 20 minutes it may be exciting to watch, but on paper it's very bland.

Dear Gumiho

I have been following Starcraft 2 since Wings of Liberty. You were there the whole time, and you never gave up. Now, you are one of the best players in the GSL, and no one is giving you the credit you deserve. You worked so hard. You make mech look viable. You are the most inspiring story in the GSL.

Please. Please, try your hardest to win. It would mean so much to me to see someone who has been working for as long as you have to finally win the GSL. You are the most inspiring story in the GSL. I love you Gumiho. Please win!
I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.
