BaseTradeTV has always been one of the key pillars in the StarCraft community when it comes to event and weekly cup coverage, never failing to put on a show. Having hosted numerous small tournaments and show matches in the past, no single one has been of this caliber. They are bringinng us a featured online tournament running over the course of 3 days featuring players like Life, Jaedong, Stork, MMA and Bomber among many others. Once again we get to see Stork in action against non-Proleague players and more of players like Solar and Byul. Will Stork be able to perform better than he has at previous foreign events? Lets take a quick look at the groups and we'll let you decide on who will advance.
Group A - Bomber, ByuL, JYP, Oz The first group consists of a group of veteran StarCraft players, all of them with their competitive roots in the early WoL scene. Bomber, being not only the recent Redbull Battlegrounds champion but also WCS runner-up comes into this tournament as one of the favored players. Though he may have had an early downfall at Dreamhack Valencia, Bomber has never been one to get down on himself when there is a goal on the horizon, and he will surely be back in good spirits for this (very significant) online tournament. Byul, on the other hand, is someone who has never tasted the sweetness of gold. Being on team Incredible Miracle, Byul resides in Korea and nowadays participates in both GSL and Proleague, where he made quite a name for himself as the "Wrecking Byul" early on in the season. Team Spectre's newly acquired recruit, JYP, is an irregular competitor in the tournament circuit these days. This will be his first tournament since the pick-up and it would be a great initial statement if he were to make it out of this group. Last, but not least, we have Oz. Oz has proven over and over that he more than capable of making it deep in both offline and online tournaments as he has become a frequent high placer in WCS AM. If he brings his A-game and the unique builds he was once famous for, there is little doubt that he too is more than capable of making it out of this group.
Group B - Journey, puCK, Jaedong, Life Group B consists of our first foreign contender; IvD Gaming's puCK. puCK, being one of North America's greatest, has sparked many upsets in the past. Being a regular WCS AM Premier league competitor, puCK is now faced with an even greater challenge as this particular group hosts two GSL players, one of them being Life. Life's tournament dominance, while nowhere near that of late 2012, is still a force to be reckoned with even though he never made it to bracket play at the recent IEM Shenzhen event. Coming into this tournament however, one could actually question Life's chances of making it far seeing as ever since his Dreamhack Bucharest win, Life has been dropping out of tournaments a little too early for a player of championship quality. With this in mind, Jaedong must be feeling confident in his chances in this group. After another semi-finals placing at IEM Shenzhen (losing to an in-form Taeja), Jaedong once again hunts for a tournament title. This may only be a small tournament but he will take any glory he can get. Journey may be perhaps the most unknown player out of all those playing. Being one of the 4 Terran players and an ex-SKT1 player, Journey comes in as perhaps someone who just wants to make big enough of a statement in order to be picked up by a team.
Group C - SuperNova, TLO, Solar, Harstem SuperNova is another player not only looking for a Heart of the Swarm championship but also a team. Being a regular ro32 Code S player, statistically he should have a good shot at getting out this group along with perhaps Solar. Solar comes in as the group favourite as his recent monster run at IEM Shenzhen was more than excellent. Losing 3-4 to none other than Taeja in the finals is not a disappointing finish considering Taeja is currently still in God Mode. With that and Solar's performances elsewhere in mind, this group should be easy for the Samsung Galaxy Zerg player. TLO and Harstem would have to pull something incredible out of the hat in order to make it through against opponents of this caliber. While TLO is known for sometimes bringing out incredible play, he also carries the reputation of boping early and under performing. And of course, once again it is the "Year of Harstem" so perhaps he'll miraculously plow his way to the finals.
Group D - MMA, Stork, HyuN, Revival The group of death consist solely of well groomed players. MMA the second place 2014 WCS finisher and past GSL champon, Stork one of the illustrious TBLS, Hyun the 2014 S1 WCS Champion and Revival the WCS AM 3-4th place finisher. MMA keeps proving over and over again that he's one of the top Terran players and a great addition to the Acer roster. Stork having had rather disappointing foreign results, still stands strong in Proleague and defends Samsung Galaxy's honor both there and in individual tournaments. Now that he doesn't have Proleague to think about, Stork may come into this with the right mindset and perhaps more prepared. Hyun's run at Dreamhack Valencia ended earlier than many anticipated, so picking up some extra cash here would not be too bad. Given his online prowess in the past, he will neither be unfamiliar with the format nor unprepared for the challenges it presents. His WCS finishes speak for themselves and so he has a good shot at making it out of the group. Revival on the other hand has seen less overall success as compared to his opponents recently. With a solid WCS placement he comes into this group as perhaps not the favourite, but it wouldn't be a surprise if he made it to the brackets.

That hype video by Temp0 is amazing, haven't seen anything from him for ages now. I hope MMA does well, looks like an amazing tournament!
|
Nice preview!
There's a lot of potential in every one of these players, every group with tournament winners or very high placers in premier and medium tournaments. Can't wait!
|
Amazing tournament and amazing hype video!
Edit: Oh and regarding Supernova finding a team, it's looking good I think .
|
Tempo! That hype video made my day
|
Ooooh dat video :O So that's why Harstem selfies were being collected?
Super excited for this. I always root for the Dong but there are so many awesome players in this that I don't think I'll be disappointed either way.
|
Only 3 foreigners? Wow, let's give more money to the Koreans, don't think they win enough yet.
|
Tempo is crazy talented. Amazing hype video.

The remaining people I'm afraid...though I prefer good games.

That hype video is probably this best hype video ever made. And the best Temp0 interpretation too. Fucking GG I loved it so much !
|
That hype-video was nothing short of AMAZING. Temp0 is so fucking good.
|
This should be a good tournament!
|
Hah, that hype video was way better than I expected, good stuff.
As for the games, Sacsri has now shown us what castoff SKT b-teamers think of foreign tournaments. Journey to win everything.
|
Looks great. I'll be watcing for sure.

It's amazing how the players who work the hardest make the most money. And how they're also the ones most fun to watch.

On July 22 2014 09:47 FlowOfIdeas wrote: Only 3 foreigners? Wow, let's give more money to the Koreans, don't think they win enough yet. Even one Code S Korean can mop the floor with all but the best foreigners, and even Code A-level Koreans can go on a hot streak and turn into murder machines. You just can't stack a tournament against the Koreans without purposefully (and unfairly) excluding tons of good players just because. At the same time, you can't just exclude all foreigners, because even if you're just inviting token foreigners, that is infinitely better than no foreigners at all. Just giving up on foreign SC2 players, burying the idea that they will ever be truly skilled, is an unthinkable alternative. That would kill the dream. Bury it for good. This is a good middle ground imo. While they could have definitely chosen scarier foreigners, I seriously doubt that they didn't get them for lack of trying considering the Koreans competing in this tournament.

Just wanted to touch on the whole foreigner thing. We had originally planned on inviting 6-8 but there were a lot of complications. One of Polt's managers never got back to us, Scarlett doesn't like communication, Snute, Dayshi & Major all had Nation Wars to prioritize, etc etc. Nothing that is any one person's fault, but just coincidence of so many being busy.
This won't be our last tournament, but it'll be a while before we save up enough to try this again. Hopefully the next time is more foreigner time friendly :-) (Although, maybe we could always try the Destiny approach to things)

Hopefully not! The more Koreans the merrier! See Shoutcraft Invitational games and tell me that would have been better with foreigners?

Temp0 is beast. Invite the best regarless of country bomber hwaiting !!

Kinda disappointed from the Protoss roster (well at least Stork is in there ), but will be glad cause of the almost as deep as possible roster of Ts and Zs to watch the tournament (alghough wanna see JD vs Stork finals, no offense to Terrans, except maybe SuperNova if/when he mechs )
Have a quesiton though - what is the "Destiny approach of things" ? (rofl), made me curious that
|
Yeah I saw that! Good for him. He's a really cool player.

The video was really cool. One thing amusing in it is that "supernova dust" is probably origin of life and all bigger elements so essentially when supernova dust settles, life starts. Cool stuff nevertheless

Why is it over weekdays and not weekend?

Probably scheduling issues for some of the players/clashes with other tournaments. This weekend for example hosts not only SPL but also Nationwars AND ATC Finals. It must be tough to find the 'perfect' date for a StarCraft tournament as there are so many.

That hype video need to be more... to the front of front page TL or something, it is gooood and need more views =)

The Little One to win The Big One. It is written!

Tempo's lyrics was smart, and his flow was decent. His flow reminds me of another mc, I just can't put a name on it.
Give it another try, and listen deeper to the lyrics and flow.
Basetrade HYPUUUU!!!!!!!
Can't wait!

I loved the hype video for this.
Should be a great tournament. I do wish there were more foreigners involved just because the most exciting thing to me is "how far can foreigners go" and the best games are games where the underdog wins (or at least puts up a good fight). But that's just me.
|
Shit Temp0 sounds like Talib Kweli!
I knew his flow sounded familiar! Talib is my fav rapper.
Much hype! Can;t wait!

Destiny is also drafting players from the NA ladder, and I think Rifkin is referring to this as the "Destiny approach".
Remember, this particular discussion is about the ratio of koreans to foreigners, not about how to raise funds for the tournament.

Awesome hype video. Must have been a ton of work.
