Is it important? No. Do most people care? No. Do some people care? Yes. Did I find a previous thread on the cow level in HotS? No.
I read the thread on "There is no cow level" in blogs and decided to look for it. It existed in WoL, after all.
Click 10 times on the Starcraft logo on the first screen upon logging in. There you go. HotS has the cow level.
For those of you not in the know...
http://www.wowwiki.com/There_is_no_cow_level
Blizzard has, for years, been denying allegations of hiding secret "cow levels" in their games, especially the original Diablo, where the rumors first began. (If you clicked a mysteriously-spawned cow several times, it opened a portal that led to a secret area, hence the name.) Descriptions vary from report to report of what exactly a "cow level" is, but they are generally accepted to be secret areas that contain significant numbers of bovines (sometimes including powerful, magic-wielding bovines) and little else. So prevalent were claims by fans to have found the "secret cow level" in any number of Blizzard's games that their repeated, pithy response became a common utterance for fans: There is no cow level.

Yeah, it's pretty great in here. We're all mooing and shit.

Sadly, the majority of people going into the cow level chat room probably haven't ever even played the actual cow level and don't know where it originated

It's like a ponzi scheme. You recruit all of your friends. When you recruit enough, they become level 2. Promise them that if they get more people, they can be level 1.

Great find, now to advance the level. Maybe we just need more cows...

If I recall correctly, cow level was a troll in Diablo 1, rumored but didn't actually exist. So Blizzard figured they'd actually put one in Diablo 2 and it's been used as a cheatcode.
|
|
It was known since WoL really...

Yes! That is how I knew to look for a new spot to click 10 times on The only mention of the cow level in hots though so far had been a blog post claiming it didn't exist, so I figured it had to be found!

It also made sort of a semi apperance in Hellfire (the expansion for Diablo, produced by Sierra On-Line, not considered part of the story) with the Cow quest were you would get a brown suit for a "complete nut" (cant remember if he was in a cowsuit at that point or if it was the suit you were getting) and be rewarded with a black and white plate armour named "The Bovine Plate".

I'm almost positive 1 is just number of the chat channel. Its there for overflow protection I'd assume.
This is almost confirmed by the fact that the name of the channel at the bottom of the screen just says The Cow Level. This is also how general chat, Sc2 looking for team, Arcade and every other blizzard defined chat channel works.

Haha this is actually pretty cool I just confirmed that it works. Now all we need is for a mapmaker to make a cow level map...

This was in WoL as well, click the logo 10 times. Seems crazy to me that no-one knew about this.
EDIT: Well, few people. And it's not really a different method, you click the logo a bunch.

This is pretty old, you could do it in WOL. I guess noone knew about it lol... would hang there a bunch.

This was in wings too, nothing new.

There is actually no cow level in Diablo 1, and the rumor was absurd coincidence it seems. However, after so much noise about it from the community, Blizzard played along and really started making cow levels, as well as including the phrase "there's no cow level" in cheat codes and hiding it in all kinds of places in their games. It's one of those community-Blizz-community interactions, which make Blizzard so good and so popular / having a strong fan following.

? Diablo I (people were making up rumors for the Cow level in D1 since you can click a cow in D1, then they actually added it in D2).
Also if you mean the actual cow level, it's D2 obviously >.>.
I bet most people already know... it's not that old.
(Besides all the cool kids were playing StarCraft instead of Diablo II anyway.)
I mean, of course most people won't know about the D1 Cow (in SC2 chat rooms). D1 Cow originated at the time when everyone liked to make up myths around games back in the day ("if you clicked the D1 cow 50 times, it will open the Secret Cow level!" and "if you find a phoenix down in the BW campaign, you can revive Tassadar!!1" and "Mega Man X can use the Hadoken if you die 5 times and get a Capsule in some level!" oh wait that last one was actually true). I bet if you asked this on DIII.net (now D3incgamers or something), everyone will immediately know. It's well known in the Diablo community, this is the SC community, so it's understandable if people don't know.
So yeah, cow level is EZ stuff (anyone who doesn't know about it, no worries). I mean, my friend (who played the original WC1, WC2, D1, D2, and basically every Blizzard game minus WoW) doesn't know that the cow level originated because of rumors to the D1 cow (he never visits internet forums, reads wiki, or anything, he just plays the game and goes with the flow, so it's understandable).
Now if anyone were a real hipster nerd, how did the cheat code "Operation CWAL" for StarCraft 1 originate?
(Since this is an SC forum after all.)

Eh, what? I thought this was common knowledge. Did people on TL actually not know about this?

You said, and I quote
"Not new. Been around since WoL launch. Kind of surprised people still didn't know about it tbh."
The op says
"Did I find a previous thread on the cow level in HotS? No.

He's not saying the cow level is new, he's saying the cow level also happens to exist in Hots which is something some people, my self included, didn't know. Everyone and their grandmother is aware of the channels existence in WoL, this thread is about it being in the new game.
The thread is even titled "The Cow Level Lives in HoTs"
|
|
This isn't particularly special — they just moved the method to get there because of the GUI change — it makes sense. Technically the GUI change happened before HotS was even released, and the same method would be used for people without HotS now too, so it's hardly even HotS-related.
|
LOL are half the posts or more in this thread really people saying "gosh I can't believe nobody knows about this it's been around forever", that's hilarious.
|
|
Its cool they put it in at all but it would have been cooler if in the campaign or it took you to a small map with a bunch of cows from D2 that you can kill maybe a base with unlimited minerals or a short simple TD kind of thing.
|
Didn't they have this in another one of their games? I thought I remember doing something similar in WoL and getting this, not sure if my memory is deceiving me or not.
Edit: Just read through other posts, cleared it up.

Dont forget hellfire where you could argue the Cow level made its first actual apperance (i consider this the first itteration of a cow level though i definetly understand those who consider D2's itteration to be the first).
Warcraft2: Spam clicking a sheep will make it explode. Easter egg, most likely no direct corelation but as this was standard for games i can definatly see easter eggs as a base for the many cow rumors in D1.
Diablo1: Rumors about a cow level. Most likely because there was cows in the game and if i remember correctly interacting with one of them enough times would yield the dialogue "I said Moo.".
Hellfire 1997: quest from a person dressed as a cow with the quest reward "Bovine plate"
SC1 1998: Cheatcode "There is no cow level"
Diablo2: The cow level everyone remembers.
Operation CWAL was used plenty when i was young i was just so impatient. Since its origin was already answered i wont repeat it.

I'll just admitt I hadn't the slightest idea there was a cow level referance in SC or SC2, I know well the Diablo aspect and that it has had some appearances in warcraft universe, but didn't at any point occure to me it was in WoL.
So I'll just randomly bash people that found it by accident by calling them spastic as to not appear so clueless. /jk

I bet most people already know... it's not that old. (Besides all the cool kids were playing StarCraft instead of Diablo II anyway.) I mean, of course most people won't know about the D1 Cow (in SC2 chat rooms). D1 Cow originated at the time when everyone liked to make up myths around games back in the day ( "if you clicked the D1 cow 50 times, it will open the Secret Cow level!" and "if you find a phoenix down in the BW campaign, you can revive Tassadar!!1" and "Mega Man X can use the Hadoken if you die 5 times and get a Capsule in some level!" oh wait that last one was actually true). Now if anyone were a real hipster nerd, how did the cheat code "Operation CWAL" for StarCraft 1 originate?(Since this is an SC forum after all.) Dont forget hellfire where you could argue the Cow level made its first actual apperance (i consider this the first itteration of a cow level though i definetly understand those who consider D2's itteration to be the first). Hellfire 1997: quest from a person dressed as a cow with the quest reward "Bovine plate" SC1 1998: Cheatcode "There is no cow level" Diablo2: The cow level everyone remembers. Operation CWAL was used plenty when i was young i was just so impatient. Since its origin was already answered i wont repeat it. It works with all critters in WC3. There is even a campaign mission where you can kill 3 footmen disguised as sheeps before they change.
I had forgotten about that. Good catch.

There is no "level 2". It´s just a chat room called "The Cow Level" and the "1" is the instance number of the chat room. Bnet2.0 only allows so many people in one chat room. If more are joining, battle.net creates additional chatrooms.

Where are you clicking? You're supposed to repeatedly click on the "StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm™" symbol on the main screen after you log in. Try clicking on the big C of StarCraft 10 times, and you should enter the channel.
...moo!
