Yannick Agnel (born 9 June 1992 in Nîmes) is a French swimmer who specializes in freestyle events, and is a three-time Olympic medalist. In his Olympic debut at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, he won gold in the 200-meter freestyle, gold in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay, and silver in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay. He is the current world record holder in the 400-meter freestyle (short course), the European record holder in the 800-meter freestyle (short course), and the national record holder in the 200- and 400-meter freestyle (long course). Agnel's success have earned him Swimming World's European Swimmer of the Year award in 2012.
His tweet:
"I just finished installing Starcraft 2 ... EGStephanoRC better watch out ! Ah ah"
EDIT: Stephano's answer
Cavenamax says: "What race do you play ? What about an exhibition match ? Could be funny !"
(This sentence refers to a conversation between Anjellycar, Stephano's Community Manager, and fans about an exhibition match between Yannick Agnel and Stephano)
Yannick Agnel: "I think I will learn to play first before throwing myself in such an endeavor !"
Stephano: "Judicious choice. Don't hesitate, whenever you feel ready !"
Some olympic athlete are notorious for playing video-game, how amazing would it be to play Starcraft 2 with your favorite athlete ?
The tweet has also been picked up by french media, it's always cool to see that public figures like Agnel can make Starcraft a bit more popular than it already is just by tweeting about it !
Well, a guy like him would certainly show how hard work can make a good player. If the amount of dedication this guy places on the pool were to be converted into SC2, he'd probably be at Life's level. Not even kidding, we are talking about the best of the best.

Well, Stephano is easily the most famous gamer of all time in France. In the gaming community, i'd say a very large majority of people know who he is. But nationwide, impossible to say really :/
Oh my goodness this is awesome! Agnel was incredible in the olympics. Me being a former swimmer i know lots of swimmers and so i personally think this is amazing. Hope he streams haha :D

this athlete is a very cool, down to earth guy. he has a scientific bachelor and is a business graduate, on top of being fucking olympics gold medalist (he could have said screw it, ill make money with sponsors only) but he stated numerous times that he needs to be mentally in shape to perform his best in the pool. so he might make this one of his new hobbies and try to push it a bit, but don't expect anything high level mid-term either. but just saying, he is not saying it to shamelessly grab a bunch more fans. i'm also surprised he knows about stephano already actually lol.

More famous than ToD ??????
Depend. As of right now almost everyone interested a bit in esports knows who Stephano is, like "oh yeah the french that wins stuff? Ive heard of him", probably more than ToD because his success is more recent.
Some French mainstream gaming (non-esport) sites talk about Stephano often enough. So quite a few people know about him in France, even people who don't know much about Starcraft. Obviously people who aren't into games at all don't know who he is.
Tod was never really talked about out of esports communities. Not his fault, esports just weren't as popular at the time. But yes Stephano is definitely a lot better known.

Stephano is famous in gamerz community ToD was famous when gamerz community was really small
I'd argue our gaming community is still pretty small so I don't get your blurb about both of them. ElkY is pretty well-known all over when Poker skyrocketed everywhere. Not just France. If you play poker online. Chances are pretty high that you know who he is.

Well starcraft 2 as an esport is a loooot more popular than W3 ever was in France. I'm in medical school (so not really the more hardcore gamer/nerdy community ...) and I would say that more or less every single male here knows about pomf et thud and stephano at least by name (as in it's that dude that play starcraft, right ?).
This guy is fast but also really nice. He is not only a good swimmer I think he is in the top 10 of french's favourite sportsmen right now. Hes often on the news but also on TV shows. The main charity TV show in France called "les enfoires" (literally, the bastards), with mostly actors and singers and they sometimesinvite sportsmen. They already invited Zinedine Zidane and Karim Benzema and this year it was him. He has more than 100 k mainstream followers on FB... and posted it on FB...
As if he was not awesome enough, he is also a Daft Punk fan.
As both a swimmer and a sc2 player I find this really cool!
For those who don't know this guy: He has been an upcomming swimmer for the last two-three years or so, he is quite young. He had a truly AMAZING olympics. He managed to crush everyone in the 200 free(won by like 1 sec IIRC, which is huuuge at that level) and also anchored the 4x100 free relay, in which he did an amazing split time which caused France to beat the US for the gold medal.
Not to be negative here.. but seriously is SC2 such a bad game that we need a separate thread when some famous guy decides to install it? I am pretty sure thousands of celebrities/famous people are playing all kinds of games all the time.
"Yannick Agnel is a gamer. The double olympic swimming winner tweeted last night about his debut in Starcraft 2, the most famous esport game.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but last year LoL surpasses StarCraft as the world's most popular video game. :/
It's a quote from a journalist, not me. And, I it's "famous", not popular. (Also esport game, not video game..) LoL is a great game but didn't invented esport.

Starcraft was never the world's most popular video game. Not even close. And neither was LoL. It's probably farmville or wii sports or something of that nature.

Depends on how you measure popularity. Popularity != Total install base. You can make a good case for LoL

SC2 is completely different from games that celebrities usually play (cod/madden as examples) because when people play SC2 they tend to be more hardcore about it. Plus this is a Starcraft 2 website so yeah.
the games celebrities usually play are games they can just play to relax and from what ive read it seems like this guy is actually going to take SC2 seriously as opposed to playing a couple games a week

That guy said the most popular eSport game... I don't count farmville as an eSport game at all, but my standards are pretty high, since I don't count LoL as eSport game too. ;D

Im sorry but most famous french gamer will always be Elky. If you are not into esports, nobody knows about Stephano in France. Hell most of the French people i meet in Seoul have no idea who Stephano is.

Famous, not popular.
No, the guy I was quoting, carloselcoco, wrote "most popular video game".

No, it's only a big deal when they do it publically , its excellent press and helps bring everything mainstream and get rid of negative gamer stereotypes.

No, not really : ). You may be thinking of Alain Bernard, the guy who he crushed in the 2008 Olympics. Though I wouldn't say it was Leezak who made him famous as he both held the WR for some time + he won the indivisual 100 free at the 08 olympics as well ; D.

His statement was accurate. If the thing Elky's famous for isn't gaming, you can't say he's the most famous gamer. Otherwise, Yannick Agnel is now the most famous gamer in France.
I wonder how far a proffesional sports star would go in competitive gaming, if they used their methods of practice and the mental approach they use when they do their sports thing.

It's nice for him that he received so much attention, i know i wouldn't if i was about to start playing sc2 tomorrow. But that doesn't make him good or anything, he's basically just saying he installed the game..
When someone as famous, young and prominent as Yannick Agnel install SC2 and tweet about it, it's good for the community. People who follows Yannick Agnel and never heard about Starcraft will soon know about it. Lots of people here would like to see Starcraft and esport grow more and more, so this is kinda of a big deal.
It also shows that our generation is proficient about gaming, even world class athlete. I can't wait to see what esport will look like when we'll all be grown up and have kids, our community will simply explodes in number.
It's a big deal for TeamLiquid anyway, they decided to highlight this topic in "This week in starcraft". So definitely belongs here

You mean, when Agnel will be streamed from the Millenium gaming house ? Don't worry, you won't even have to try.
ElkY is more famous for playing Terran, and being best friends with GiyoM (the only guy who ever won a starleague that isnt South Korean) due to the fact that that's where he got his money from, met the people who were good at poker to train with, and honed his ability.
You CANNOT say "oh he got his money from real estate" without the person having gotten a license, ok?

Thanks to share it with us anyway !
Please enlighten me, why is this worth a thread ? Should i make one everytime i hear of someone installing starcraft 2 ?
This is what kill e-sports. Why people must be so jerk about everything? We should help to raise the number of players and encourage to spread interesting facts like a notorious person (not related to e-sports) talk about e-sports. If you really think this thread is not worthy, you should consider just shut up.
