It is well known that many Starcraft 2 players did indeed play Brood War before they jumped into Blizzards next big RTS title. I've scanned through the forums and I cannot find a post about this yet, neither can I find one on Liquipedia.
I recently found out that MMA used to play in SKT1 under the name 1988. Similarly a few weeks ago I understood that Rain (Korean Protoss), a rather new player in the SC2 spotlight, used to be By.Sun. With the kespa invasion, I found it interesting to make such a post to have a place to refer to, when in doubt. But also because nostalgia is incredibly awesome and to gather all the info/memories regarding this topic from forum people in one place seems mighty fun.
The idea is simple. I'll list all the replies in this post, starting with the two mentioned. Let the info hail!
Other games (if some games outgrow this consolidation it'll get it's own list!).
Dawn of War ------------------> Select Supreme Commander ----> TLO DotA --------------------------------> BabyKnight Company of Heroes --------> HuK Command and Conquer -> Apollo (caster)
There are no restrictions what so ever. Players swapping games during SC2 beta or kespa invasionists? Just as equal!
Any game will be listed.
Instead of asking "Why is not player X and Z on the list?", post info about the player stating game (race for brood war and warcraft 3) and name changes.
This is gonna be a long list, 70% of the best players in the Korean SC2 scene came from BW. It'd be easier to do a list of players who didn't come from BW.

A long list is a good list. The goal is not to gather everyone like so (even though that'll be a product of this thread), but merely to know who's who. If they changed name or not. Making a list witheveryone NOT coming from Brood War or Warcraft 3 is not helping in this cause.
Nevertheless, before it's moved, all the GSL finalists in chronological order, from Liquipedia.
Fruitdealer used to be called Cool
Hopetoture used to be Rainbow (he since changed his name back to Rainbow, to the joy of the foreign scene. This led me to presume Starcraft players needed girly names, and to change my ID to Ribbon)
MarineKing used to be Claire, a B-teamer
Nestea was Zergbong, a 2v2 player turned joke 1v1 player.
MC was Iron
Rain (the Terran) was apparently never a BW player, according to Liquipedia? That seems wrong.
MVP was on Stars, and a legit A-teamer, but I'm not sure what his ID was
July was kind of a big deal in BW
No idea about Inca, but does anyone care?
Polt was a WC3 pro
MMA was an SKT1 B-teamer
Losira was Thunder, a B-teamer on Oz.
I don't know about TOP
Leenock was A rank in ICCUP, but never joined a team
Don't know about Jjakji
DRG "played BW competitively", but wasn't a pro.
Genius is endless and forever
Don't know about Seed
Life was literally in diapers during the first OSL, and might seriously have never played BW competitively at even an amateur level.
Revival: Once a B-teamer for MBCGame Hero, now he is in TSL
Symbol: Don't know what team he played for in BW, his ID was Neel, played zerg. He beat IdrA in one of GOMTV Classics 2-1.
JYP: Once he was also a BW progamer under the ID Smart[S.G], now plays for EG.
ByuL: Now playing for Fnatic, he was also an ex-BW pro, under the same ID. In his last season of BW career, he went 4-0 in PL. For some reason his team didn't play him enough.
Fruitdealer: Another ex-BW pro, formerly on eSTRO. He was a ZvT sniper for the team, iirc he was 2-0 against Nada
Heart was another ex BW pro, formerly on the ID KT.MGW)Strict
GanZi was also a BW pro, a Woongjin Stars Terran.
DaeZanG was also an ex-BW pro, Woongjin Stars Protoss, now he is one of the Korean commentators for GSL.
TheStC, HopeTorture, TheWinD also were ex-BW pros.

fOrGG (or whatever capitalization he uses ) never actually wanted to be named Fin, he stated that he had used a smurf account to run the qualifiers and Gom automatically picked the username as the player name. After a while he got around to changing it.

This is important. The essence is to identify former brood war (or war3) players, who might have been forgotten, as starcraft 2 players.
I am looking for names that are standard for each player during the brood war era. irOn -> MC feels like an ideal example, but that might just be my prejudice. He might have used that for a long time before.
Right should be right. Though I feel most in the list so far are actually accurate?
(Although I guess if you had him you'd have to have pretty much every foreign SC2 player as virtually all of them who were well known in SCBW made the switch to SC2, still, you've got the WC3 players listed so...)
On October 29 2012 20:59 Epoxide wrote: On any notable player on LP2 there is a link at the top saying something like: "To see x Brood War career check y(link to x's LP1 article)"
My point was that a nobody B-teamer that did not play any televised game or barely attended any offline preliminaries would might not have it listed. It was a precautionary method so he didn't think that any player he searched would have a known BW career listed.

There is a distinct lack of Bisu. And Stork. And Fantasy.
It would be really neat if the OP included people coming from other games, too. The majority of SC2 players come either from BW, W3 or didn't play competitively at all before that. What I'm curious about are those that come from other games.

Indeed he was, from Jinro's liquipedia
Unperturbed, Jonathan threw himself into his gaming. Becoming well known in non-Korean Starcraft circles by the moniker FrozenArbiter, he became a moderator on TeamLiquid.net and curated the site’s Starcraft 2 forum until the release of Blizzard’s long awaited sequel to Starcraft.
Really funny to see all the changes to the names. I mean most players are young, but I think we all have a username or two we regret.

Good list. Good to see ust.Rabbit and MacSed on there, as both were on one of my WC3 teams at one time. WC3 for life.

Yeah I remember that. Artosis talked a bit about a Command&Conquer world champion switching to SC2 and then we saw some pics of Artosis, Tasteless and crew having some beers with dApollo in some Korean restaurant. I'm sure dApollo had a pretty good upbringing to SC2 in that group.
And just to say he was A-level zerg would probably not exactly do him justice. I mean, wasn't he like the best player of the entire NA continent at some point? Not really sure though.

if I have to name 4 coolest, smartest and deadliest wc3 players, they all played UD
axslav was known for his cool 2v2 with strifecro, achieving some success in WC3L
Moon is commonly called the fifth race, but his true Korean nicknames were The Fantasista and AndroJang (Andromeda Jang)
SeleCT was part of the SK.intel, the first foreign wc3 proteam in Korea. He went to win back2back WCG in DoW, went back to wc3, disappeared and re-emerged in sc2.
Polt was good enough to emerge from nowhere and make a quarterfinal (iirc) run in one edition of MWL (wc3 MSL-equivalent). Then he just disappeared (for college apparently)
Grubby used to make an excuse for losing out of a Linkin Park song
m00nglade was some mediocre night elf. Zenio was some mediorce orc on ladder
for the above list: elfi: UD for team fnatic rabbit/macsed: human sjow: oldschool human of team AMD64 Stephano/namaa/coldfuzion: never heard of them, prolly amateur/chobo.

I did some reading up on it when I bought WC3 under the delusion I would actually enjoy DOTA (Not a slight on the game I just got flamed all to hell for being the noob I was/am), and have dabbled against the AI when bored and or drunk. Moon's stuff was impressive and Grubby's series where he commentated a few matches, he recently re uploaded them, were really fun. That game is so complicated.
Stephano if I had heard correctly was known-ish, but not a super top level human player.
