A friend of mine is doing a survey on the experiences of Starcraft players for a school project, please fill it out.
http://tinyurl.com/starcraftsurvey
It should take less than 10 minutes.
Thanks!
RESULT Pdf Tony just sent me his pdf that he's using to present his assignment tomorrow. Some interesting stuff
Thanks for all of the responses, blew away the numbers that all of his classmates got!
http://images.kelsin.net/SCpresentation-handout.pdf
More Info As most people are saying this survey is very short. Most people take only about a minute.
A lot of people were asking for an explanation. I know he's a PhD student in education and this is for a communications course he is taking. Here is what my friend wrote about it:
Hi, I am a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. This semester I am doing coursework that examines different activities by internet communities. In this survey I am hoping to gather data about the experiences of StarCraft 2 players in terms of what is acceptable behavior and usage of slang specific to this game.
I will post results here once I am done collecting and analyzing responses.
Thanks!
Once my friends sends me any result analysis, I will post it.
He's gotten a great response (over 1700!), thanks a lot for everyone that answered.
Pre-Result Stuff So far he just showed me this image (not final version but still cool):

Done.
Would be nice to see for what this is though. I mean survey for school but why?
Done, good luck!
Done. May I ask what kind of project?

can you give us a little more info, like what is the goal of this survey? as that survey was really short lol. it took me about 30 seconds. 17 of that on the definition of cheese. =/
done :D gl with your survey
Done. Takes less than 1 minute, not 10.
Done. Could you please let us know about the results, then we can compare it to the Blizzard statistics. Especially concerning race and league distribution.
Also, would this be a good explanation for cheese? + Show Spoiler +Going for a short-termed strategy, which either leads to very quick win or lose, but has very less or no option to go into lategame.
What school project is this for exactly?
Done, didn't take long at all. Hope you get enough responses!
Done.
It takes about a minute to fill, so op change the time needed, you will get more people doing it.
Done. Will you share the results?
Yeah 10 minutes was a huge over estimate
Any chance we can see the results when they're compiled?
Done, no way near 10minutes
I know he wanted me to know where I posted so he can post a follow up later, so results etc will definitely be coming once the responses slow down.
I will ask him for an explanation of the project and post if I get one.
He's an education PhD student at the moment, but I don't know anything else about the project yet
Done =) please share results later
Done, ye took about 1min.
Done. I second that request to see the results.
Also StarCraft is one word. Just sayin'.

Done , I know every one already asked but it would be call if we could see some results of it later?
Done. Indeed, share the results once you've compiled them! Good luck with defining "cheese." I gave it a good effort.
Done. Share them results. (Later that is)
Done, would be interesting to see results.
Filled it out for you, would you mind explaining the project a bit more? It seems pretty interesting.
Filled in, glhf to ya mate!

You should tell your friend to not bother with that survey and instead look at this thread as an interesting example of a chameleon effect sort of phenomenon
done good luck on your project!
Done!
He maybe misspelled minutes and seconds...

took the survey/
How many multiplayer games of StarCraft II have you played in the last month?
The options are between 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50+... seems like you would want a larger scope of options, i am gonna assume more people on this site have over 50. Fifty games isn't really a lot for a month. There is no way to distinguish between a person like me who plays 50 games a month and between a pro-gamer who plays 50 games a day.

Should be a week ;D
I have a few friends who I consider somewhat serious SC2 players who haven't played 200 games since release yet.
Cool survey though. Tell us what you're trying to find out and the results soon please ^^

Done. Definitely took about a minute to fill out... Would love to hear what the data is being used for.
You really should include a column about how often the person filling out the form makes sexist/vulgar/racist comments while playing. I know I certainly do, at least in team games.
done, took like one snd a half minute.
Done. And its StarCraft even in the thread name! :-)
Done. Actually really interested to see the results of the survey.

Thanks!
This is for a communications course he's taking this term.
I will post a link to any results or whatever once he gets them. He's very thrilled with the number of responses so thanks guys
I think you should have separated the "glhf" with the "gg" since many people might start out with it, but not say gg at the end.
Done.
Is it possible for your friend to post some of the results of his project once it's done? Would love to see not only the data from this survey, but also his analysis.
Thanks~
Just took your survey, and like everyone else I'm interested in the results. This is the second starcraft survey I've seen in a few days hosted on google o.o
Take into account that this TLrs you are polling, not the general noobie population
Done.
Also just want to note that the game numbers aren't that crazy. TL members probably play way more than average, but I'm sure there are many people (like me) who follow tournaments, but also need time to study and only get a chance to actually play on weekends.
Done. Let us know if there are any interesting results please.
Done, very interested in seeing the compiled results.
No option for custom game mode in "Which game mode do you play the most?".
Strange...

All done. Gl hf with the project.

He was originally aiming not only for a TL audience (hence me posting this for him).
Also it allows for very quick answers. All of us know to just hit 50+ immediately!
Done. Would love to see the results.
Done
Good stuff!
Wish your friend gl hf from us!
Hmmm, done. Although I might add that maybe you should've added custom games for game mode. I know people who solely play custom games. And would definitely like the results and what this was for!
Done, would love the results.
done, if you can id edit that 10min thing you said earlier, i didint fill it out at first, then decided to when i realised its 10x shorter than i thought.
sure thing. What is this about anyway?
Done. I would be interested to see the results at the end
Done, would love to see results at some point.

How does one define cheesing?

Could you please post the result?

I answered that chese is+ Show Spoiler + an unorthadox strategy aiming to catch the opponent offguard and take a quick win.

Done ! :D Hope you share the results.

Lol why are you using a dutch survey website while you live in America?
My cheese definition:
An opening that seeks to create an unbeatable advantage by hiding structures or cutting economy, usually results in an auto-win if not scouted, fails horribly if scouted. Examples: 6 pool, proxy 2 gate, cannon rush.

Ah. My apologies for that stupid question.
Usually its so hard to find respondents for these types of surveys.. Great community! Intrested in the results!
Done ;-)
Cheese- A build generally out of the norm designed to win you the game early with no contingency plan; or in a manner easily stopped if properly prepared for, therefore relying heavily on your opponent not being prepared.
Done, gl with the assignment.

Done.
Is badmouthing zerg racist comment? Its my race ^_^

I did it. Please post the results, this has piqued my curiosity.

done good luck phd student

Done! Wish to know the results!

Just fyi, you're going to get biased results in asking for "what type of gameplay do you play, 1v1/singleplayer, multiplayer, etc." because most likely one of your biggest sources is from TL.
Done. I'd be interested to see these results, as well.
Done, hope it helps him.
Took ~1 minute.
done, took >1minute.
Looking forward to the results, hopefully no one put anything retarded down
Done. Looking forward to results!

Done. Very quick and easy, everyone should go do it!

hmm.. kind of a different study with the results he's trying to reach, but I guess it works.
oh and done.
Did it, I do hope we can see the Project in it's final form.
I think for the how many games have you played in the last month Almost everyone would put 50+.
Done. Like many others have said... good luck with the results/project.
Done, Hope to see everyone else's input
Done!! I never knew i could explain the term "cheese" so effectively.
I felt like liquipedia

He fully realizes that. I mentioned that numerous times but reaching out to casual sc2 players is much harder. The response from the official sc2 is lackluster at best of course
According to what he's told me, that's actually one aspect he gets to discuss with his class, bias based on who you have the best access too!
I did this, although, I always say GL HF, but I rarely say gg unless its for a tourney or something, since usually games that take less than 10 minutes are just them thor dropping and mass banshee harass until I leave, I prefere games that are slightly drawn out, although I do have some respect for people who have perfected these strategies by executing them 1000x
Cheesing: Using tactics that require significantly more skill to defeat than to implement. Often used by inferior players to defeat superior ones.
done, gl with your project, keep us posted with the findings
Is this going to be a published study? Man I want to study internet culture when I'm in college xD
Done. How can this take more than 2 minutes is beyond me.
Done, please let us know what the results are!
btw, this should give some interesting results
i wonder what he can conclude from this
Cheesing: Any kind of early game all-in strategy in which the perpetrator has no contingency plan.
Done! GL with whatever your friend is doing
On November 15 2010 11:06 Fingulfin wrote: Cheesing: Any kind of early game all-in strategy in which the perpetrator has no contingency plan.
That's what I wrote too, but I simplified it a bit. An early all-in with no follow up.
As this is a survey about "acceptability" in our community, I would have liked to see a question asking whether or not the user thought of cheesing, as per their own definition, as acceptable or not.
That being said, I think it might shed some light on some interesting trends, assuming that the sample size is large enough!

Just add a simple word cloud made from the cheese responses, just a quick thing my friend sent me, might not be the final version. He's had over 1700 responses and his professors are blown away, thanks guys!

loll guys... A 'cheese' is a strategy that relies on stealth and hiding information in hopes of catching your opponent off guard. A trait of which is, if scouted and properly responded to, almost always fails and the cheeser has barely any way of coming back.
I am curious why you didnt combine words an variations together like "cheesing, Cheesing" or "scouting, scouted"
Too late now, but the first question is poorly crafted. It doesn't include all the options or "other."
Wow really makes me feel great to be a dmd player like 90/ of other players out there...
Interesting results thanks for posting
This was really interesting data to have. Obviously the respondents from TL are a very specific and atypical segment of the total SC2 population, but even so it was really interesting reading. I would love to see more research/data like this actually, from TL or wider. I find the whole "SC2 culture" re gg and the like to be really intriguing, as I do attitudes towards cheesing and stalemating games and the like.
Thank you very much for posting the results here, and I'm very much behind anyone else who might be moved to do this kind of research.
Thanks!
I'd like to see the data compiled against each other according to rank. As in how bad manner, race distributions, and all other data points compare according to the rank of the player that provided the data.
