More like Mascherano the guy playing out of position is the real key to the defense. His cover play goes un noticed because its not needed most of the time but he's doing Puyolesque shit more and more often recently.

Yes, Mascherano is the new Puyol of the team. He does all that cover work, and he is the real captain of the team in the field. And he is great and autocritic with the media press. I'm glad he came to Barcelona, I miss Puyol so much

btw, I criticized a lot Iniesta last year, but today Barcelona collapsed when Iniesta was subbed.

Fun stat: Messi with that 2 goals has scored more freekick goals in 10 minutes than Cristiano in 2 years.

Defense in Barça is all about the total football they play anyway. The massive pressure on the ball right after they lose it is their defense. But yeah, Mascherano back helps. He's pretty much the best central defender in the world right now.

Normally I would agree with that. But the last 3 goals they conceded to Sevilla wasnt because the press had been broken. They were defending deeper, had numbers and were simply poor at defending both man to man and positionaly.

Mostly it was Mathieu for the second and third and the whole defense was culpable for the 4th. And Sevilla was smart enough to realize that it was working and kept fizzing stuff across the 6 if they made it into good positions and it made Barca veryyy uncomfortable.

Bartra is not good enough as a Barcelona central defender. He can't defend and cover will like Mascherano, he can't pass and combine like Piqué.

Vermaelen played well his preseason matches, maybe he doesn't injure this season (I know it is very unlikely...)

Eh it looked to me like they had just lost most of their concentration. They subbed out some important players and were like 'this game's won anyway'. To play the way Barça does, everyone has to be 100% concentrated throughout the game as it's the hardest style to play. They just lost concentration and that led to a couple of mistakes for sure, but overall everyone in the team is guilty of losing the second half in my opinion because they were too comfortable.

Yeah sure you could call it losing their concentration. To be honest thats exactly what it was. And you could blame the whole team for it sure, but if you keep offering the other team joy in very specific ways and they keep targeting that then its a weakness because most top players are able to adjust and self correct. And after the third goal there was no more this game is won anyway.

They were shaken you could see it.
