I put money earlier on the Portland/NYK game with a +7 spread on Portland. Already up 10 in the first quarter. This Knicks season has been too funny, seems like they get worse every game.

transparency doesn't mean anything, it's about redistribution.

Jerubaal is correct. Tax loopholes happen when businesses have revenues in multiple states or countries, have revenues and expenses where the timing can be fudged or have assets they can write up/down.

i don't want to detract too much from NBA and perhaps i shouldn't comment as i'm from australia and not the states, but i'm speaking from personal experience, i am employed by a single employer, my total salary is a single figure, but i easily managed to reduce my effective tax rate from 40+% to 20+% by simple distribution. it's not even magic, it's law.

anyway, how the hell did the rockets win lol

In the US you can reduce your effective tax rate by shit like having a mortgage, having kids, etc., but Kobe is way too rich for any of those things to make a significant impact. Though capital gains in the US is only taxed at 15% which is why most rich folk don't pay anything close to the statutory income tax rate, but for someone like Kobe who makes most of his money through salary/income I doubt he'll be able to get his effective rate under 25%.

NY shouldn't have to pay any taxes because they've "mortgaged" their future.

I am so topical.

Fun week ahead: From Nov 27-Dec 8:

SA plays OKC, Houston, Indiana
OKC plays GSW, Portland, Indiana
GSW play Memphis, Houston
Indiana plays LAC.
Miami plays nobody, per usual.

I am sure Kobe has good accountants that know how to funnel his money so he doesn't end up paying that much in taxes. That's just an argument against the Lakers when it comes to signing players, but the truth is that there are ways around it. There is more than one reason Kobe spends so much on the homeless in LA and other charities.

And I am a little undecided on this signing still. I mean in a vacuum it isn't bad (when I look at it in a business sense from the Lakers), they show loyalty, etc. And Kobe really is worth that much and more (he also made $3 mil in his first 3 seasons, so for his career he will still make less than deserved). It also solidifies the Lakers brand. By attaching themselves to Kobe's name in emerging Asian/world markets, it is a good move in that sense.

As for Kobe, I never blame a player for signing for the most he can. I would not hold that against him. And Kobe brings in more $$ than Duncan and Parker combined so not a good comparison in the pure $$ sense, but I see your point about the salary cap Doraemon. I commend players when they take less to make a better team, but in a way they have been stuck by "the man" and I never really like it.

I just don't understand how this all fits into the Lakers' salary-cap plans yet. It might very well be they have a viable plan, it just isn't revealed to us yet. We will have to see how this comes about in the next few seasons. This was definitely not all based on basketball reasons of course.

I just dont understand why people are going after Kobe for not taking a pay cut. He did take a paycut. From 31 million this year to 24 million the next 2 years. Its not his fault their is a cap.

The issue with Kobe is just that he's clearly not putting winning first anymore. So he's full of it the next time he uses that bullshit cliche.

The bigger issue is Lakers' management. I just can't comprehend how you cave to that. Does anyone think another team was going to offer him anywhere close to that? Even accounting for the hype and PR that surrounds Kobe, I think they paid waaay above market value.

at that point, George said, yeah we are winning now. sparked a 17-4 run.

I'm pretty sure they paid that not for the success of those 2 years, but past Kobe's retirement. They want to keep the man happy and loyal.
Lakers are gonna suck for the next few years tho.

He'll be happy no matter what - they're gonna give him a statue one day. Kobe said it wasn't even a negotiation, he just took the Lakers' first offer.

Kind of sad that the winner of the east is basically guaranteed home court in the Finals. I guess that's been the story for a while now, though. At least we don't have that horrid format anymore.
