Welcome, to the Semi-Pro Gaming League!
About The SPGL is an organization dedicated to building the middle steps of eSports: that vital area between ladder hero and pro player. Based on 8 distinct regions in ALL of North America, players can compete in various scheduled events to work their way up the competitive tiers up into a national finals. Better rankings carry over to each season where you can advance up, or drop down in ranking.
League Structure The SPGL has three different tiers for competitive play: *Open - which is just what it says and is the lowest tier *Main - This is the main tier and is the first instance of invite only. It is also the only tier where you can lose invite status *Premier - This is the top tier and the only one you can win prize money in. Each of the 8 regions in North America represented in the SPGL have ways of advancing up and down to the next corresponding tier. Seasons last 3 months, and rank in tier carries over from one season to the next. The SPGL also utilizes several different types of gameplay: double elimination, Swiss, and round-robin. These styles are utilized to judge a players skill over time, as opposed to just who is HOT one day, and cold the next.
Rules No Pro players that make a living off salary or streaming allowed. B-team and below players are exempt from this rule. Full set of rules can be found here. RULES + Show Spoiler + Official Semi-Pro Gaming League Rules (These are the base rules for any SPGL event. Rules are subject to change. If there are changes or additions to the rules, they will be announced before an has started, either through the event forums or at the beginning of the event being held) ________________________________________ Tournaments 1. All participants must represent themselves and play in a region they are a current resident of. College players will use their home state as residence when selecting the region to compete in.
2. If a player is late by 15 minutes to a game without getting an OK from both his opponent and a tournament official, that player’s series will be forfeited.
3. All tournaments will be played in a Bo3 double elimination style except for 1st and 3rd place matches which will both be done as a Bo5 series.
4. If your games are in the lower bracket and are at least 2 rounds behind, a 5 minute break max is allowed. Anything longer without consent of an official will result in a forfeit of the series.
5. Extended breaks may be taken pending estimated game time and clearance from the tournament official. Players should remain close by their PC in case contact must be made.
6. Tournaments WILL NOT use the extended series rules. However, the 1st place match will award a 1-0 advantage to the player that remained in the upper bracket.
7. Maps will be chosen from the current map pool and ONLY from the current map pool when deciding play. If there is an issue in the map pool (such as maps being no longer supported), officials will make an announcement stating the change.
8. No map may be repeated in the same series.
9. Players may only compete in the tournaments which they have been signed-up for, or invited to.
10. No observers, other than those permitted by a tournament official, may join a tournament game as a spectator.
11. Players must set themselves to Busy while playing.
12. Streaming of tournament play is allowed unless a player is being casted. Doing so will result in a warning for the first offense, and a loss of series for the second offense. Penalties do not carry over from tournament to tournament. I strongly encourage players who stream to direct viewers to watch via the tournament stream. -This is not to harm player’s income, but to help us continue to provide higher quality production, as well as support our sponsors.
13. In the issue of “Bad Manners” (BM): please take a screen shot of the BM and notify an official or admin only. Tournament officials will handle Bad Manner issues and the resulting consequences. Do not publicly post the incident. Advertising BM publicly may result in similar disciplinary actions.
14. If you have hardware or lag issues, let an official know. Rulings will be handled based on the extremity of the issue.
15. Players are to follow all instructions from tournament officials unless plausible reasons are given.
16. Race swapping is not allowed. However, players are allowed to change their main race between tournaments.
17. If your game is being casted, an admin will notify you. Notify the admin of your first map choice and they will create the game so that all necessary people are in the match. The admin will continue to create each game.
18. If a player has reason for a dispute against the rules, email drogith@nesc2league.com within 24 hours. The dispute will then be reviewed by all officials, and a vote taken. You will then be informed of the outcome. If there is any change made, it will be announced to the public
Round Robin/Swiss Style All rules are the same as above except for the following. 1. All series are Bo3 regardless of when the series is played.
2. Round Robin series are played twice a week and must be reported on time or the series will be considered forfeit for both players.
3. Visual proof is needed for a player to be awarded a forfeit win. (email, screenshot, etc)
4. Race swapping is not allowed while taking part in either style of tournament.
This Tournament's Format The format for this opening day tournament is a 16 man, double elimination, open bracket… 8 of them! Remember those 8 regions mentioned above? Players must register for the tournament in that region by following the provided links below. The top 2 players from each region will then compete next month, on August 18th, for a $1000 prize pool!
Subscription $5 will get you access to HD stream across all 8 channels. Plus, we have sponsor prizes to give away during every season that is restricted to only subscribers. Your contribution will also allow us to upgrade all of the streams as needed and add additional content beyond SC2.
BTW, entry is FREE.

So it's only 16ppl per region.
What are the qualifications? (based on ladder rank, tournament standing/accomplishments, etc..?)
Also how will you determine region eligibility?
PS. do i just have to wait for website to come up?
Just signed up, so i'm guessing it's first come first serve.

Rules page doesn't work right now.

This is really great. Good luck on this. Perhaps one day I'll be decent enough to compete for Michigan but in the meantime I'll cheer on my compatriots.

Just signed up, so I'm guessing it's first come first serve. There are a series of tournaments and other events taht are scheduled through the next 3 months of season 1. that will help fill out different levels of competition. As it is right now, this is open to everyone in North America... which is confusing that an Australian signed up... But I only posted about one event as it is easier to concentrate on the small picture until everything else gets brought into place
And if people don't make it in time for this event, there is another one being posted next week as a Swiss style... but you have to wait for that one

why is it a 16 man open thats really stupid when theres tons of people masters and above from each region, not to mention the 16 spots could get filled up with bronze level people...

We are actually working on a league as opposed to just a bunch of tournaments. That means promotion/demotion matches, month long (2 matches/wk) group play, all sorts of stuff. There will be a signup for one of those next week, I just didn't want to post everything up as it could be confusing all at once.

how is the prize pool divided? do the first round losers of the invite-only get a prize? or is there really no prize to the regionals other than an invite?

it shoudl be masters and up but players that are not pro yet, imo .

On July 17 2012 11:25 -ReD- wrote: how is the prize pool divided? do the first round losers of the invite-only get a prize? or is there really no prize to the regionals other than an invite? No they do not, the invite only runs like a normal tournament with prize distribution. As we are running on a thin budget this season, additional prizes, other than sponsor give-aways to subscribers, won't be possible until we pull in additional sponsors.

Is there an off-line LAN? Or just online?

It's not that though, It seems there is only 16 slots for each region so I figured by the time I could fix the problem every spot would have already been filled. No worries though, GL with the tournament.

Im happy to see a chance for good players to have a chance at becoming noticed. Hopefully this increases the talent field and creates some new teams. It also gives players in low masters/diamond something to play towards. Very excited for this.

so only 16 spots for each with open registration = instead of "semi-pro" you're likely to just get "casual". the hell am I supposed to do if the tournament is full already?

That is a 32 man open that takes place over the whole month (2 matches/wk). And that is for each region. There is a whole system that is being put in place, it will just come out piece by piece to make more sense. Also, 16 x 8 =128, so not as small as it seems overall
|
you have to seperate the "casual" from the "semi-pro." Looking at the brackets, I see 1-2 decent/good people in each. The rest are casuals who do not stand a chance. Have people sign up, write a short paragraph about their achievements, then sort through them, NOT on a fist-come-first-serve basis
EDIT: For example, as far as semi-pros go (I'm assuming your definition is people who don't play SC2 full time, IE don't receive a sustainable salary) Sandbox is one of the people who is a MUST. If he isn't in the tournament, then there's a problem that others were taken above him.
** I was only able to sign up/inform team last night b/c of luck in seeing the thread. Others who didn't are out of luck, right off the bat.

I hope that your league goes well. I have a piece of feedback: Your OP is pretty brief, and your league new and unheard of. I think it's a mistake to talk about (or even have) the premium subscription here. I did a doubletake and said to myself, "where are the selling features? I'm being told that I can see worse than pro players and I can pay money to enhance that experience"
I actually have little clue what that money affords me. Who's casting? Is it someone that I would ever consider paying for even? How many games does this get me? When are things broadcasted? Details about VODs. Who is even playing?
Hope this is received well ^^
|
where are the selling features? The selling features are the better stream and sponsor product giveaways to the subscribers. As for the casters, there are multiple casters for each region.
Who is even playing? There's brackets on zeek, just click on the pictures of the regions.
Not sure about the other questions DX

how would you determine if one is a pro and what not if they are just smurfing on another account since it's only online

For a $1k tournament this will be very unlikely. People usually only do that stuff for lower cash tournaments because if they get caught it's going to be pretty bad news for their reputation.
I'm still pretty concered about the 16 slots though I didn't get into the top for Midwest, kinda sad~ D:

Remember, Drogith will announce next week the second part of the league. It's larger (32 per region), and you can make the national finals in season 2, so it will be rather quick to move up! :D

I kind of disagree. There are some really good players that aren't on a pro team that will be participating, and it would be really easy for a smurf to blend in with them, and with that much money online I think it will make it even more worth their time and effort to try and cheat.
My guess is there will be at least 1 or 2 smurfs that play, and a crazy map hacker might possibly try to enter as well. In amateur (or in this case 'semi-pro') competitions, money often brings out the worst in people. They just need really good admins scouring the event looking for these cowards.
|
In my honest opinion, you NEED to make it unlimited players to enter the qualifiers. That way you WILL get the best players from each region, instead of accidently excluding the ones capable of winning them.
|
Does that mean MMA can play in this since he is a B teamer now?
|
Hope you guys realize basically no one is making a living from streaming/salary lol, including known pros. Just thought I would point that out.

|
Whoever is dealing with Ontario pm me!
edit:nvm :D

I'm assuming that it will be the first 16 players that check in, not necessarily the first ones to sign up. So, come 30 minutes before check in time...there's going to be an F5 fest.

So the premium access is $5 for all 8 streams, meaning you pay $5/mo... you get 8 streams of HD and access to all the VODs in HD for a single payment. It's the same as a team subscription. Anyway, we have prizes that we will be giving away to people that do subscribe from our sponsors. *This could be power supplies, towers, SSDs RAM, etc... As we get more sponsors, more stuff is given away. *Games? You will be getting an almost nonstop stream of games from 11a to ~6p based on the timezone. *The main broadcasts are only once a month, however during the week, some of the streams will be adding more content at no charge. This means more SC2 content, and other types of games as well.
The subscription also allows us to put more money into the broadcasts to improve all aspects of the league. These

What we are putting into place is an actual NA league that has rankings and structure in place to promote/demote people based on ability. I'll amend the OP to add in more information about that structure in just a few minutes. I just don't want it to be too confusing at first.

so why call it semi-pro ??

If you actually took the time to look at the thread before posting a question that has been answered numerous times, you would realize these things:
1. This is the first of many tournaments over the next months. 2. There will be different tiers of players, i.e. the the semi-pro is legitimate but there will also be other tiers.
ps. sandbox, you signed up late and the region you did is full of nothing but masters/GM players, so don't know why you and others are complaining; it's your own fault...there will be other tournaments and not everyone shows, you and your teammates should know that

So it's a number of tournaments that make up the first season, is there multiple tournaments that can allow you to get into the august 25 tourney or just this single one with 2 advancing from each region.
Sucks if it is as between the time that I started work, got home and checked it was already full.
|
These tournaments are the only way into the Season 1 final (August 25th), but there will be more tournaments coming up, you can make the season 2 finals.

Sucks if it is as between the time that I started work, got home and checked it was already full. Sign up for your region anyway. Once we reach a certain time before the tournament starts, it will be opened up to fill the last spots. And if you don't make it in, you'll get automatically for the August Swiss tourney.

Click the banner of the region you are from, that will take you to the z33k page to sign up.

It's true, I even know the answer to the ultimate question!

This seems to be very well done and thought out. That being said only allowing 16 people to sign up for qualifiers is a huge mistake. You are denying a lot of good people chances to play and that will only hurt what looks to be a fun/good league. I hope this gets changed but either way I hope this works out well. Best of luck.

I understand the concern that a lot of people have for this, but again I'd like to point out that it's not just a one-off tournament, but a full on league that will have different tiers and ways to compete. By limiting this tournament, all I'm doing is filling in each tier at the size that they are supposed to be. The skill of competitors will work itself out naturally with the promotion/demotion structure set in place.
Also, sometimes people don't show up for the tournaments when they are supposed to.

If you read the comments, OP will make an announcement very soon that will allow players, outside of the 16 spots, to be able to compete.

I wish you good luck, guys. I believe your mission is particularly important because, as you say, there is a much needed step between being good on ladder and beginning to be a pro. I think there are many people who could be considered to be in that position, sometimes because of skill, sometimes for other reasons. Besides, I firmly believe in tournaments below the highest gosu levels. It would be cool if there were (unofficial, private etc.) tournaments in every city, province, country (but also school, work, extended clan circles etc.), not for money but for the tournament play, tournament culture, some actual competition among live entrants sitting next to each other, as opposed to only massing solo ladder (of which I don't wish to say a bad word by any means). No anonymity, good sporty manners, consciousness of being recorded and possibly casted, inability to rely on, "I will just keep massing more ladder if this gamble doesn't work." It should also help the participants adjust to pressure after which they should be more capable of dealing with the stress of difficult games on ladder (because they've taken part in tournaments, so ladder won't intimidate them even with supposedly much to prove). So, all in all, GL HF!

Thank you for the kind words NewbieOne! I really hope this starts picking up steam so we can really get this running in NA. I know I'm in it for a long haul and so isn't my staff.

So jealous of all these tournaments in NA! Need more of them in Australia

Thanks, Drogith. As a Europe newbie I'm also looking forward to seeing what kind of builds and tactics semi-pros from the other server come up with. The subscription would be worth every penny but I probably won't have the time to follow, I'm already past deadline with my dissertation, so this is a working summer.

Semi pro refers to nearly pro, like GM (high masters) etc... Bronze are not "semi pro"
wtf is 16 player bracket for like 6 provinces? Da fuck is this shit.

This isn't just one tournament. This is a league, which will have more than just one event to get to the prize. Next month will have another event for the players that are unable to participate in this initial tournament.
Also there's nothing prohibiting Bronze players from playing, but the league system will put players in their right spots, making sure to "weed out" weaker players.
(That's from my understanding at least).

Not all the provinces are in one region, in fact I think they are split up into 4. Try reading and checking everything out before posting randomly please

Dual Sight needs to be taken out of the map pool. Just my 2¢

It's the last day to register! we are still registering for the tournament this weekend. after 40 mins has gone by during check-ins, it becomes "first come first serve". Also, Sunday, the Swiss tournaments will be put up and every one who does not get a chance to take part in tomorrow's event will get placed automatically into the Swiss. Make sure you check your Z33k accounts/email to complete the registration! Good luck everyone!

Can't wait to watch, good luck all!

it's jayaiwhy from Houston here, I'm gonna have to pull out from playing as I'm busy now.
Just letting the admin know
|
Just making sure everyone knows they are supposed to be checking in right now! We are staring the tournament at 10:55a in your region. For some reason PDT was showing up...
|
What are the rules for latecomers? I'm looking at my bracket (northeast), and not a lot of people have checked in compared to the amount that signed up.
|
Go ahead and check in, there we are working on getting things straightened out on our end and it does look like we will end up dealying northeast about an hour. so just hold tight and sign in.
|
How long until it starts? I checked in and now im going to get food in 30 mins. Hopefully it will be in 1 hour or 1 1/2 hours.

he said in the post above that it's delayed one hour

Yes but it's very confusing because on Playhem is said that the tournament starts in 2 hours. Then they changed it because there was some sort of mistake, making the time EDT instead of EST. Now it's said that it starts at 10:55 EST but it's delayed an hour. It's confusing to tell when this starts. I think they should just stick with the EDT for this qualifier because if you fuck up the time , people will schedule themselves to be ready for that time that was a mistake.

It was actually listed as starting as PDT not EDT, that was the issue. It's starting at noon EDT with the hour delay. But to one point, the z33k page says check-in starts at 10am and that never changed.
|
Can the admins to be lenient with me? I'm leaving to get food right now and I'll be back in 30 minutes. I should not be much longer. Winning this tournament is important to me so if I delay my match for a few extra minutes( if that's needed ), it would be a great help.

Edit: The byes are kinda messed up for NE still but oh well O.o

So I planned on waking up in time for the converted time (PDT->EST) and as a result missed the tournament. This occurred for (not surprisingly) over 40 of the signups. What do you plan to do about this? Having only Boyo from the Northeast along with a few mid masters is kind of a joke.. Edit: It's being taken care of, stay posted

It was good chatting with you on the stream and again I can't reiterate any more how sorry I am about what happened with the PDT->EDT blunder. And yes it truelly was a blunder. As posted in here, the check-in time was 9:55a based on region and 40 mins later it would be moved to first come first serve. We delayed the start of the East and Northeast regions and blasted social media to try and get everyones attention to the problem.
What will be going on is there is a Swiss tournament starting on the first of next month (August 1). All players that did not play in todays tournament will be automatically placed in these events. Those will be put up before Monday. The top 8 players from each region will compete in "up/down" matches to move up to this tournament in season 2.
Again, I am incredibly sorry about what has happened and I wish everyone the best of luck in this, and the Swiss tourney next month.

Invites have been sent through the Z33k page to sign up for the nationals on August 18th. We will be starting at 1pm EDT(10a PDT) with signups starting 1 hour prior to that. A more formal post will be made later.
For everyone that was not able to participate, invites will be going out to add you into the Swiss Tournament that starts on Wednesday Aug 1. I will post again when the events are setup.
Remember to SUSCRIBE! I have 8 items to distribute on August 1st. They will be randomly going to anyone who subscribes until that day. Depending on the number of subs, we may be giving out all of these prizes, or holding onto them until next month. Lastly, let us know what you though about the streams!
