Interested in advertising on our site? TL's primary audience is an 18-24 year old male demographic who show strong interest in video games, competitive gaming and technology. Please see our quantcast profile for more site information.
Direct Banner Advertising Buy a 728x90 direct leaderboard. See our advertising page for more information.
Sponsored Threads While banner advertising is a great way to get exposure, some advertisers have expressed interest in a more interactive advertising option. We've filled this need with the Sponsored Threads section where advertisers can pay a fixed weekly fee for a Sponsored Thread that will be listed on the sidebar until it expires. The advertiser then has freedom to post and use the thread to promote their product or service however they like - eg running contests / competitions, giveaways, soliciting feedback, etc.
We believe this will also be a great way for a community advertiser to promote his or her product. Thus, we will be offering a separate "community" rate for advertisers who are directly related to TeamLiquid or the Starcraft community. If you're interested in a sponsored thread, please contact us through the advertising page.

hmm this is very interesting, I gotta say I miss the "category icons" next to the news titles you used to have on the frontpage. It looks a bit more bland now with just pure text.
Its smart in a way that you won't get a bunch of banners and images cluttering the site, but on the other hand it might be difficult to attract sponsors when they get a thread title in like 8px large text font as their way of bringing in users to their actual advertisement thread. Surely not as easily spotted as an actual banner.
|
Sounds reasonable enough. I particularly like the fact that 'community rates' are being offered. This is a really smart solution for I believe it can actually add to the organization and highlighting of events and services, rather than have them thrown elsewhere.

I know many people use adblock, and just use a filter. I'm good at the blocking of things, but how do i go about unblocking just the "good adds"
|
I'm unable to see these in-house ads, if they're already up. I use AdMuncher, which updates itself periodically, as opposed to AdBlock. Is there an exception I can add to be able to view these specific ads?

What's happening with the Small VOD/Recommended VOD threads? I can still access them through search or through the forum index, but since Featured Threads isn't on the sidebar anymore, are these important threads going to be moved to other sections?
|
I really don't see the point of this, but good job I guesS? Edit: Does this mean gosucoaching doesn't get free threads anymore?
Awesome!

If you use the Chrome adblock, right click anywhere in the page, use the AdBlock menu and click "Don't run on this domain".

It does have "ads" in the URL so maybe your ad blocker is blocking it too.

R1CH, wouldn't that just enable ads then on livestream / ustream etc when i view them on teamliquid.
If not cool, else o well i'll give this a shot. Also, best place to report adds, website feedback?
|
R1CH i use a HOSTS file that blocks ad and tracking servers indiscriminately i know that the banner on top currently is a fastclick, i also noticed there was a flash based ad earlier too although it was till blocked. Is there a list of servers that i should unblock if i choose to view the ads.

There's plenty of people who would donate to TL if there was an option, don't really see the need for the intrusive ads and sponsors. You'll probably get more money from donations than from all the ads anyways.
|
I have a question. Is it safe to assume that all the threads currently in the non-sponsored forums are the type of threads which people won't have to pay for? And only threads and posts that are currently being closed or deleted will be in the sponsored thread forums? Or is the line between the threads that someone will have to pay to post and the threads which someone won't have to pay to post somewhere different?
While being absolutely precise is impossible, can you at least talk about what you have in mind?
|
Not sure I quite get the Sponsored Thread idea, so they are just popular threads on TL that the advertiser can pay advertising rights for? Or are they specific threads by TL that you nominate as sponsorable - e.g. I guess if you do a new TL Attack post you might want to put it up for sponsors as it will get a lot of hits and benefit from some interactive advertising.
|
I'll wait and see before deciding whether to block it with my userstyle or not. When announcing something like this to the community, isn't the most important thing to explain what the advertising money is used for? I'll assume some or all of it goes back to the community, for example, for future TL starleagues, the Liquid` team, and such.

Advertisers can make a thread of their own specifically for advertising something they're selling/trading, and have TL feature it in the sponsored section to provide coverage. Essentially just paying for the privilege of advertising in threads, if i understand the OP correctly.

It's not like we're showing popups or a huge leaderboard or skyscraper, these are the same sized banners that we've always used. As for the Sponsored Threads, this is a nice way to organize all the commercial offerings on TL without people worried about them being blatant advertisements if we allowed them in regular forums. I don't understand how you can find them intrusive in the slightest.

Sponsored Threads will primarily be for people who are part of our community but also want to promote a product / service, for example offering SC2 coaching or Starcraft related merchandise. They will also be used for people unaffiliated with our community to reach out and interact with us, such as promoting a contest, soliciting feedback, etc, with a higher rate charged.

Meh, if it helps keep TL running, I'm okay with it :D

Cool, Im sure the companies will get paid big time. So many people with so many advertisements relating to gamers. Good idea.

Although this is largely unintrusive and extremely reasonable right now. Please be careful. With increasing the commercial aspects of running a website, there runs the risk of alienating parts of the community, generally leading to the ever feared "sellout" threads and posts which will be inevitable.
So far though, I am largely happy with the changes, as I do find blatant advertising in threads to be quite annoying.
as the stalker would say i serve... for now

About the sponsored threads not being attractive, I don't entirely agree. The sponsored threads sounds quite unique to me in that there is the interaction aspect. The amount of attention for a thread can easily be assessed by looking at post and viewer count of a thread. Potential sponsors can look through that forum section's history. The sponsor information page could serve statistics on the specifically purchased threads on viewer and post counts (aggregated). Sponsors who have ventured into this path of advertisements could leave testimonials. The small advertisement space can initially be seen as an issue but good statistics can make up for that. I like the unobtrusiveness, and I give kudos to TL.

I am glad to see TL getting more revenue from sponsors! My only question, is this money mostly for keeping the website up, getting a salary for the guys playing in Korea, or maybe an income for Nazgul? Don't get me wrong, I love ANYTHING that helps you guys out in Korea and keeps the site growing and free. Personally assisting Nazgul for all his years of service is no problem either <3

Well played. Well played.
I am wondering why the featured threads icons are gone though, ie MSL, OSL, Proleague, SC2 links. There is definitely still space, either above or below the advertising boxes where these could go, and they provided a really simple way to jump into whatever it was that you were looking for.

Alright guys! i trust you guys know what u're doing as always i don't like advertisements though. EDIT: That said, ill check out these threads to see if there's anything interesting.

I think the Sponsored Thread section is a great idea from which the community as also the sponsors take advantage so its a win-win situation there. But im going to miss the featured Thread Section... I m sure TL staff has allready something up their sleves to replace the missed section

The google ads are never starcraft related...?

I know you said the ads were going to be "Starcraft related" but I'm looking at an AVIS rent-a-car add and it doesn't even list the car's HP or damage to light units. For $252 /week this car better at least be able to kite zealots. Please, let AVIS know that if they want to effectively advertise their Starcraft related product, they're going to need to include some of this vital information.
By the way, I opened my ad blocker so I can see the ads now. Don't want to miss out on supporting TL.net!

Maybe you can rent one of these:

Am I blind or something..?
I cannot see ANY ads anywhere. The only link I can find on any page which could be considered an advert would be thelittleappfactory.com.
I don't see any banner ads though, and I don't run any ad blockers. That being said, there is a blank space at the top of the middle column which would fit a banner ad - but there's nothing there. The HTML is:
iframe width="468" height="60" src="http://direct.fairfax.com.au/hserver/site=ONL.CH.FDADNETWORK.NETWORK/AREA=NETWORK.FDADNETWORK.dating/AAMSZ=468X60/acc_random=74960629525594420?" allowtransparency="true" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" hspace="0" vspace="0" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" bordercolor="#000000"
It doesn't show -anything- in that iframe though. Are you sure your advertising thing is working?
*EDIT: freaky deaky - after I posted this article, I saw an ad in that space. However, the next page I loaded.. no ad. And no ad here while editing this either.
*EDIT 2: Okay.. now I have TWO ads which are showing up - however other pages it doesn't show up. The HTML in this spot is different for the working ads. the html above does not show ANY ad. HTML for the working ad (or at least the comments so you can figure out which provider it is:
<!-- ValueClick Media 468x60 Banner Rich Media Code for Team Liquid --> <!-- Template Id = 14,876 Template Name = AdXpose for Flash Creatives --> <!-- ValueClick Media 468x60 Banner Rich Media Code for Team Liquid -->
SO, it would appear, that the fairfax advertisement setup is not working correctly, whereas the ValueClick one does.

Why do you allow advertisers such as http://www.xbids.com to advertise on the site? These are much more ethically dubious than even copypaste guides such as Shock's guide.
These penny auction sites are nothing but trouble.

I'd just like to point out that out of curiosity I tested it. If I turn adblock back on I dont see the ads like not any of them even the inhouse ones. :/ And it made it sound like they were supposed to go around adblock unless you added an extra filter.

Maybe... Most likely it just makes the person who has the ad make money though. I'm pretty sure TL doesn't get a cut in the revenues.
