Most if not all companies do this. I'm not sure why you're super surprised. From a security standpoint this is the most logical thing I've seen riot due in terms of social media in a long time.

If anything, it's really on the mods for entering the NDA when it's against Reddit policy to do so.

I don't see what's strange about Riot adding a conditional NDA for private communication.

Well the article suggests 2 other big game Devs that don't do it. It's not really anything new though that the subreddit is controlled by Riot.

It just means they haven't been in a position where they want to disclose sensitive information to outsiders in a limited capacity like this.

That said, I can't really imagine the kind of sensitive information that would be useful to inform "Reddit LoL Mods" collectively would be.

In fairness, Blizzard and Valve have pretty poor community relations teams. For example, a lot of pro players don't know who to talk to at Blizz even when it comes to problems like scheduling conflicts or travel to events. And Valve is notrious for basically not having a community relations team.

But that's not necessarily what this means. I really just don't care about it.

Yea I agree I'm merely pointing out that the statement that most if not all is not quite true. Valve well Icefrog does communicate a lot of pro players which I'm not sure if he makes them sign NDAs or not.

Well yes this incident doesn't necessarily mean that influence but past actions along with this give some convincing arguments for them influencing.

I agree with the premise, but disagree with the course of action.

I don't consider it wrong that Riot offered the conditional line of communication, but I consider it a failure by the Reddit mods who chose to do so to uphold Reddit policy that forbids them from entering a contractual obligation on behalf of Reddit without admin approval. That's not something I think Reddit as an entity should condone, especially given how inconsistent and moderation on the site is to begin with.

If Riot considers it important to enter a contractual obligation with Reddit organizationally, the moderators aren't the ones they should be going to. They might not know that (though given that the communication was proposed by an ex-moderator, I highly doubt that), but the moderators should.

If there's an open policy that's going to be laid out like you suggest, it should go through administration first. I wouldn't consider the agreement currently set up between Riot and Reddit's LoL subreddit mods to be valid, in that they took it upon themselves to "represent" Reddit as an entity when they don't have the authority to do so.

IceFrog probably only talks about balance stuff. I can see the Riot community team discussing things like server security/stability, hacking, and other stuff which is much more sensitive. In those cases, an NDA doesn't seem out of place.

During my time as a Wrench, we never had an explicit NDA but this was also several years ago when Riot was much smaller and didn't really have a formal Community team. But it was always made clear whenever we were discussing something sensitive that it was on a strict "we're telling you this to help you do things, but never ever disclose this to anyone else" basis.

The way I see it, one of the biggest problems here is the massive distrust the general community has towards the subreddit moderators and Riot's intentions. So being public about intentions and having a formal process seems like a sensible course of action.

That being said, yes stuff against Reddit ToS is wrong. Then again, Reddit's approach to moderation is so inconsistent I'm not sure where they draw the line. Reddit itself is having a philosophical disagreement about its direction as a site but I suspect they'll view this poorly.

So is ours, but I'd like to think that if LL moderation was offered a similar agreement there'd be better communication between the mods and TL admins about the situation as a whole.

To be fair, I don't think riot would ever want to have an official pipeline to TL since the standard thought process here is still that riot is wrong about everything all the time.

I mean, at least from my perspective, it was never necessarily "right or wrong" in the absolute sense, but "do I agree with the design direction they're taking League in as a game".

At some point I just accepted the fact that the kind of game I wanted League to be and what Riot wants it to be aren't the same.

Probably the first time in recent patches that Riot has actually fucked something up IMO is the veigar rework.

But if you took GD at face value you'd think riot is a bunch of idiot savant monkeys who actively try to ruin their own brand but somehow fail at fucking their game up more than they fail at making it.

Well I mean even among things where there's no direct analogues, my favorite version of the game was also one that was pretty generally unpopular, so even if you took DotA out of the equation, I can accept that my view on what League should be like is pretty unorthodox. I was already kinda bitching about things before I even got my DotA 2 beta key and started playing DotA again.

One thing I always wonder is what Lee Sin would be like as a champion if rather than removing the double-E bug and buffing the shit out of everything, they didn't buff him and balanced him around the double-E bug.

Why do mods even have relationship with riot? Wasn't the whole point of reddit supposed to be bottom up community driven aggregation of news, events, articles, and dank memes? I don't see why riot should have any hand in moderation crew of reddit.

Meanwhile, my predictions of what riot is going to do / wants to do are almost always right, but super unpopular here :D
