yeah, but if you are playing nwn from a lore gatherers point of view its great. the lore books you find/read are all canon, the areas step into their histories a lil bit. and the expansions are great!
if you are playing BG or BG2 for the lore of the area only you are probably going to be bored, because the game is very much about what is currently happening in the games timeframe and not much else.
EDIT: Asmo if you randomly want some background on Pacelena, Byssalt is based on three cities: Waterdeep, Edo Kyoto, and Prohibition era NYC.

Well that and neither Baldur's Gate nor Athkatla are popular settings for most of the D&D novels to begin with. They're only really prominent locales because of the games in the first place--whereas Neverwinter was already a thoroughly explored setting well before the game.
I think the Volo's Guide to X series from 2E is still the definitive source for lore on the setting, though.
