I've been doing some research, and basically sitting on my hands for the evening, and I can't seem to find a conclusive result from anyone.

I have plans to drive with a friend from Atlanta, GA to Raleigh, NC for MLG tomorrow, however, Irene remains a scary prospect.

Can anyone throw down some convincing facts to sway my partner in crime to make the journey? I really don't want to play it safe and miss out on this, but he feels differently.

you will be driving in rain but inland of any of the dangerous stuff.
as you can see here: http://www.weather.com/maps/news/atlstorm9/spec_floater10_large.html
your route will be entirely west of the westernmost of those projections

Apparently Obama has declared a state of emergency in North Carolina. Doesn't that mean event needs to be canceled? Or at the very least delayed until the hurricane passes?

this is unfortunate, hopefully they can delay smoothly or irene will turn out to not be too dangerous

Imagine the worst, all of our favorite progamers dying. Holy shit. It would make esports even more [in]famous though xD

no. the governor declared a state of emergency, which is a state-wide event. basically it means they can get federal assistance for it. it is meant for the outer banks/far eastern edge of north carolina, but you can't declare state of emergency in part of a state. (well a mayor can, but this is extensive enough to have the governor step in)

Hey, nice, I myself am making the trip from Atlanta tomorrow. I'm personally not worried, though I think that the person I'm planning on making the trip with is. From everything I've read Raleigh might see some decent rain and wind, but nothing truly worrisome.

I live in Chapel Hill N.C. 45 min away from Raleigh and from what i've seen in the past Raleigh is to far inland to be in much danger. Just be careful on rural roads and watch for fallen trees.

I'm no hurricane expert but even if it isn't a direct hit, the models are showing that it will be a major hurricane hitting the coast of NC.

Information where I got the source found here:
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/graphics_at4.shtml?5-daynl?large#contents

This major hurricane is apparently quite large. Unless you are like 300 miles away from the coast, you will definitely feel the effects of this major hurricane.... either in terms of hardcore rain, or very very strong winds, due to the shear size of this.

Winds should be manageable that far inland as others above have said. Expect rain and winds. Watch for fallen trees as noted above. Drive safely and you'll be fine. Have a good time - I'll be watching from home as the hurricane makes its way north toward me!

So Atlanta to Raleigh means I85 through Charlotte which is REALLY far inland from where the hurricane will be.
According to weather.com there is a 50% chance that Raleigh does not even get rain.

If we do get rain we are most likely looking at 1-2 inches.

There is still a 5% chance that it veres west, hits Wilmington and makes a path towards Raleigh, but the hurricane moves slowly so you will either have time to turn around or just leave Raleigh if you are already here.

If you guys were on the fence about coming I can see this swaying you, but if you had fairly solid plans, I wouldn't let the 5% chance of wasting a drive turn you away.

Just to echo what others have been saying, Raleigh is like 150 miles inland, and on high ground. There wont be a problem. I lived inland about the same distance in Alabama during Ivan, which was much bigger storm. It came right over where i lived and it barely drizzled. Hurricanes by their very nature derive their power from the water and lose it quickly once inland. In fact, I'm more worried about losing the stream than delaying the event - if you have the opportunity to go DO IT! You might see something that none of us get to see if the stream goes down.

While the storm is large, the worst weather, including the super strong winds, will be compacted close to the eye, around the eye wall. Places like Raleigh that are that far from the eye wall won't be seeing anywhere near that. It will probably seem like a normal thunderstorm once you start to feel the effects of the hurricane and not much more after that because of the way it's moving. 40mph winds would probably be a good estimate on the wind speeds, which isn't a big deal considering you're going to be inside most of the time. Plan on it raining for most of your time there.

Other than that don't let it ruin an awesome trip! Have fun!

They will be there (if they aren't already) before it hit. (I don't know that for sure but its an educated guess )

Ok look your on the left side of the eye and there is no threat of a storm surge near you. You should be fine. I've been through plenty of hurricanes on the Texas coast the worst that could happen is the power go out. There may be a tornado here or there but chances of them happening on the left side of the eye are slim

LOL there is no storm surge in Raleigh because they are 150 miles inland.

The state of emergency is only for the coastal region of NC. Raleigh is no where near the coast. There is going to be a lot of rain though...
SC:BW has a higher skill ceiling than SC2? SC 64 is where it's at brah.

My brother is playing in the tourney this weekend and he said it is fine there atm. I am sure it wont bother too much with the event it self. The only problems i see are flights with people getting there and people wanting to leave afterward.

Irene isn't going to affect Raleigh until the middle of the day on Saturday so it shouldn't affect anyone's travel. As long as the power stays on, people in the convention center probably won't even notice the weather outside.
Of course, you only live one life, and you make all your mistakes, and learn what not to do, and that’s the end of you.
