I vote 1. I don't think sc2 is nearly as great a spectator sport. People will eventually get tired of watching it, and that will come before the first sc2 osl.

2-4 sounds reasonable

which means that either jaedong gets diamond mouse and/or platinum, or flash gets platinum and/or gold (more likely the latter)

Or <fanboyism> Bisu will sweep the next OSLs and win a golden mouse <33333 </fanboyism>

At least 5. As long as there is demand (and Blizzard stops trying to kill it), BW will live on. SC2 OSL would be boring as hell to watch.

Voted 5+. I think the transition in korea will be rather slow. I can't see how SC2 in its current state is gonna take Korea by storm as most people hope it will.
Spectator-wise, it just doesn't have that ZING that immediately attracts a spectator.

2-4. I expect Ongamenet to host concurrent BW and SC2 tournaments starting in the near future, and going for at least a year or two. But in the end, I think one of the games is going to win out (at least in terms of prize league status).

I dont believe all the rumors, I dont see how with all the stuff going on in bw in Korea right now there could be such an insanely sudden end to it.
Voted 5+, hoping for 10+ and that SC1 and SC2 will coexist in Korea.

5+ is about 2 years. I wouldn't be surprised if BW keeps going until all the SC2 expansions are out.

I voted 1 because I can't see any more happening just from having read all the events happening up to this point. I am greatly disappointed as I would enjoy seeing 10+ more osls.
I hope flash gets a golden mouse.

i wonder if pro broodwar ends will all the progamers we know start sc2 and get to the top another time? flash repairs terran for sc2 and all should be good.

but yeah, im not too worried, cause the osl will continue within sc2 and proleague will always be very exiting. but i still voted for +10, simply because the koreans put that much work into broodwar and spent all that time mastering the game, i really doubt that they will just stop with broodwar tournaments, cause even if they did, wouldnt the fans complain hard so that it comes back?

the "5+" option kind of makes no sense, when there's 10+ too. Lets say I think there's 20 OSLs left, both 5+ and 10+ are viable options >.> (assuming that "+" ir a replacement for "<").

It will be more than 2-4 since I really don't think Korea will drop BW until SC2 is completely balanced which could take multiple patches if not expansions (which will take place over a few years).

I can see it being 2-4 tho if Blizzard is quick to make things good and B.net 2.0 is a big sucess.

I said 5+, but I don't know. I don't think BW will last more than 3-4 years from now, just because the people that grew up with the game will start getting older, and not many kids will want to play an old game like BW. I really doubt SC2 will ever take hold as a major progame, though. It's just way too boring to watch. People are just trying to peg SC2 into the role of BW, but sooner or later I think people will realize it's not going to work.

It's just annoying, because brood war became a great game on its own and then developed a pro scene on its own, but people are just trying to make SC2 into what brood war was, rather than waiting and seeing if SC2 is really ever going to make a good e-sport.

Isn't possible that OSL is going to have BOTH a SC2 and a BW tour?

That sounds most resonable to me.

I voted 2-4.

I get the feeling that, after the next OSL, they'll start hosting simultaneous BW/SC2 tournaments for a while (ideally, I'd like at least another 6 BW OSL tournaments) then eventually permanently switch over to SC2.

Whilst I'll be sad to see BW go, hopefully they'll keep it going whilst SC2 starts up until the point that SC2 becomes as competitive as BW is and then a permanent switch.

..Are sponsors going to sponsor a new game or an older game..doesn't seem reasonable to me..
I'd say 2 more OSL's, voted for 1 because I hope this OSL is the last, not because I don't like BW but because it's time for Starcraft 2. Grrr... Won one of the first OSLs back when you could win with basically any build..Foreigner's creativity > Korean find out what works and practice the hell out of it.

10+ I think/hope. While SC2 might be very fun to play, it's definitely not on the same level as SC for viewers/fans. Most of the cool things you see in SC2 are new build orders/openings. There's less emphasis on micro, and that's what really makes for a fun game to watch. SC has more ways to harass an opponent, and that ends up producing very entertaining games. Seeing reavers blow up 10 SCVS at once, a pool of blue goo as 4 goons trigger mines, mutalisks darting in and out of a mineral line picking off marines/scvs, that kind of stuff is way more exciting than seeing 2 people sit in their base and macro up (SC2). On top of that, SC2's battles are more heavily affected by unit composition, and when 2 armies meet, it tends to result in one of them getting completely crushed. Compare that to SC, where big battles tend to reduce the size of both armies, and reinforcements play a much bigger role.

SC2 will be exciting at first because it's a new game with shiny graphics and shiny new units. Once that novelty wears off, I'm fairly certain people will be dying to watch SC again. Of course, nobody knows for sure what's gonna happen in Korea with regards to live SC2, but unless Blizzard makes some massive changes to the game for the sole purpose of making it more exciting to watch, I doubt it will replace SC in the OSL entirely. While Blizzard might consider these changes later on, it will be, without a doubt, with an expansion that they can use to profit from them, which probably won't be for at least another 2 years (6 OSLs).

SC2 will take over quickly. The graphics are just that much better for watching, and most people will be playing SC2 exclusively, on release.

This. Also, if the OSL lives past SCII then I shall see if I can save enough money to start a college for gaming careers in the U.S.

i think it's unfair to be posting this now a lot of the sc2 scene probably doesn't check tl often right now cause of the beta hiatus that's why im looking through posts and seeing a lot of people say sc2 isnt a good spectator sport i think sc2 is a great watch even more so then broodwar with players like tlo around lol i said 2-4 but i think that bw will live on in a more underground way and there may be throwbacks every now and again but i doubt within 2-3 years bw will ever be back to the way it is now and has been in the past.

10+. I think BW and SC2 will coexist edit - for a little while. 1 is just too silly. I don't think all 13 teams will install SC2 on all their computers overnight, hop in for SC2 qualifiers a day after.

I think a better poll would be "How long will SC2 last before everyone realizes that it's insanely boring to watch, and Brood War is far more dynamic and exciting?"

Seriously though, I think there will be 2-4.

Omg this poll kinda makes me sad if 2-4 is true... we'll start hearing words of "I'll never be able to win an OSL" by top progamers who haven't won one, especially if they don't make a switch to SC2.

Good to see people simultaneously proclaiming the death of Brood War and the failure of SC2.
You sure are some happy prophets. If I ever need some extra pessimism when I'm feeling good, I'll know who to call.

The people in this thread who think a good e-sport is based off of how good it looks based on graphics... are terribly wrong. If that were true, there is a plethora of games with better graphics than SC1 and none of them have ever lasted as e-sports.

Now SC2 may be a better game than those others, but don't for a second think that the long-term success of an e-sport has anything to do with graphics.

I agree but felt like 5-6 was the right number (or most likely - personally the 'right' number for me is that it continues indefinitely). So I voted the unpopular 5+.

the problem with SC2 transition would be the AIR times of the OSL PL MSL... The game durations are shorter compared to SC1 and that might have a negative impact on # of spectators... People wouldn't want to go through hassle of going early and getting a good seat etc when the event lasts less than an hour.

That's just a speculation I have that is purely based on the limited knowledge I have.

Maybe 2-4. I think SC will have a hard time surviving in a world where Blizzard wants to strangle it to increase SC2 sales. Even if SC2 flopps Im confident by now that Blizzard is set on destroying the SC community to make sure people switch games.

I think the question should be rephrased as "How long will Blizzard allow BW tourmanets to exist?". I would say for a year or two at max while people are in transition between the games.

It's a little disturbing to think the OSL is ending and it's really not the tournament isn't going to end. It'll move on to Sc2. I don't think that's a bad thing. Gotta progress and it's only reasonable that they move on. Now we will be seeing the last BW OSL's soon most likely two, three before they make the switch.

For the record, it's not like Blizzard can turn off the lans of people who still want to have BroodWar Tournaments, I promise they don't have a huge switch that they can turn off to shut down everything. BW tournaments themselves will exist as long as people want to play in them.

2-4, SC2 gameplay is good, its just the interface that sux.

I take it youre not a frequent reader of the forum if you cinserly belive that Blizzard cant shut down tournamnts. If they start to charge money for broadcasting BW (something theyve started to do, just that havnt got any money yet ^^), some organisations could get a hard time broadcasting -> no broadcast -> no sponsors -> no moneys -> no leagues/teams.

I think, as I said in the previous post, that this is just a move to strangle the BW community to force it over to SC2. If Blizzard keeps on going the way theyve done until now I wouldnt say moving to SC2 would be progress as you would want it to be!

Sorry for straying a bit off-topic.

Is there no way to view a poll without voting yourself?
I voted 2-4 because of all the uncertainties going on with Kespa/Blizzard/Gretech right now, might as well be only 1 more, or if things get solved, 10+

Blizzard has failed to create another game that is great to WATCH (not just play), people will get tired of watching two big armies clatch over and over again especially since you don't clearly see what's going on. It's not entertaining at all to watch how many units a player can pump out, that never interested me in BW either. It's called intensity.

Still I voted 2-4 left, SC2 will have nothing to do with it though, but I really think the betting scandal is going to kill off BW as well as the current Kespa BS.

I really hope SC2 and BW coexist, because if not I'm done with professional RTS.

So I hope for 10+. I don't really know what's the most probable answer though. I don't think SC2 would replace BW naturally, but with Blizzard killing BW it could happen...

Some people seem to forget what happens with CSS and CS. The gameplay changes are way smaller than in BW-SC2, the graphics difference is much bigger (since the SC2 graphics are equal if not worse for the spectator), and CSS is even more compatible.

And even so, CS is still the predominant game. If SC2 replaces BW it's not because it's better, it's because Blizzard is going to kill BW.

I honestly don't know... Somehow I don't see all the BW pros picking up starcraft 2, otherwise they would have played the beta. I think it may take over eventually, but first it will have a smaller proscene with mostly new faces. BW and SC2 will probably coexist for atleast a little while, IMO.

AT LEAST 10 MORE. I BELIEVE.

Seriously though, SC1 is just so much more fun to watch than SC2. I just watched Moletrap cast some SC1 games, and he's the last SC1 commentator out there. But he's even screaming as he sees July's lings run around ForGG's firebats, and you rarely see that in SC2, which is mostly just 1 huge battle and its over. God I hope threre's a lot more OSLs because im gonna miss SC1 to death T.TTTTTTT

Love SC:BW to death but i can't say i'm not excited about the possibility of SC2 OSLs and korean pros getting into SC2. Blizzards just has to fix a lan option so the OSL etc. won't have to rely on blizzards servers.

depends on how well SC2 does in Korea. If it finds it Fanbase and (new) ProGamers, SC1 won't have that big leagues since I don't think there are enough sponsors to support two games. If SC2 doesn't beat SC1, there could be a lot more StarLeagues, since Korea was always kinda separated to the rest of the world, mostly Europe and the US, where SC2 will rule the next few years as supreme RTS (not to hard to know that =)

I think it'll be perfectly reasonable for them to do both a Brood War and StarCraft 2 OSL at the same time. It'll just depend on the pros attitudes after SC2 comes out. There will probably be plenty of them, including a lot of the bottom tier players who will want to switch over to SC2 but I think there will be at least some people who will want to stick with Brood War.

I really don't see any huge downside to letting the pros decide if they want to compete in a Brood War or SC2 Starleague so I wouldn't be very surprised if they allow both games to have OSLs simultaneously.

Hopefully they can run them both, but that would probably be too difficult.... I still don't know if SC2 has the staying power of SC:BW cause it is so well "polished." Instead of making a game that has weird quirks in it, they made a game that they wanted to be played professionally... and because it came out of that I'm not sure people know yet how to make a professional scene game, they try to, but atm, SC:BW is cooler.

5+ at least. SC2 isn't even out yet and there are two OSLs a year. WC3 and SC both run tournaments at the same time, I don't see why SC and SC2 can't live side-by-side either. Surely the legacy of SC players and teams and coaches, etc, are not going to simply pack up and move on. In economics you would consider it capital investment and it is always of foremost interest to make best use of your existing capital infrastructure before moving on and upgrading.

This is why companies continue to do things the "old way" for a good while when better alternatives exist. If you already have machines to do function X, it's best to keep using them, now that you've paid for them and they exist, until they wear out. Then, when it's time for replacements, you finally go for the new stuff. At present there are a lot of stellar SC players and coaches, each of whom has a lot of mileage left in them. When the kids start showing up at the SC2 team practice houses instead of the SC team practice houses, then the teams will start to atrophy and the tourneys will begin to wind down.

Until that time, though, the SC world has an enormous fan base who love their favourite players. They're not going to simply abandon their heroes because technology changes and a shiny new game shows up. Those people who skip school to bring signs to support their beloved players won't simply stop caring about them and go watch some n00b nobodies play SC2. It will take time for SC2 players to develop fans and it will take time for SC to lose its fans. I say 5+ OSLs easy.

Ill just quote what I said amongst the rabble of artosis's interview thread with Hwanni (http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=130668)

Anyone who actually thinks the competitive BW scene is going anywhere for at least a few more years is completely naive. It's going to take years for sc2 to get to the competitive level required to completely replace BW as spectator entertainment. Even if (and I do think think its a big IF) sc2 becomes more popular in Korea a year or so from now, BW will have to becomes decidedly unpopular for them to actually stop hosting tourneys, (especially considering how much spectator overlap could be cultivated.)
A lot of this anti-sc2, Brood War forever sentiment displayed on this forum is evidence of why BW won't simply fade away. And call me crazy, but I have a feeling this attitude is even more common amongst Koreans than that of EU/NA gamers. There not looking for a replacement, if anything, there's a healthy population that is threatened by the concept.
Equally naive is this assumption that most known top gamers, would consider "switching" out. As many more pragmatic posters have touched on already, a large part of the skill in BW is related to dealing with an interface that is simply outdated. It doesn't make the game less compelling to watch or in anyway take away from the talent these guys show, but its a reality I think people would do best to accept. Why would someone who knows their amongst the best in the world at BW (i.e. flash, jaedong ect) want to switch games to something they may very well not be not as proficient at?
It wouldn't surprise me if BW matches were still showing 6 years from now. Or if the real last OSL was a decade from after sc2 release.

I think its a little presumptuous to assume sc2 WILL replace sc1 altogether, and completely unfounded to assume sc2 will be so much more popular, it will destroy the majority of interest in sc1.
