SlayerS-EG vs ZeNEX
Recap

Liquid vs NSH
Preview

Check out the GSTL on Liquipedia

A Hard Day's Night

Ah, the GSTL we know and love is back. With a large number of series going all nine games last season, it was disconcerting to see the action end so quickly on the first two days. ZeNEX and SlayerS-EG fought fiercely in a series that was decided in an ace-match, where unexpected Ace, EG.JYP took down ZeNEX's Extreme.

Next up is an elimination match, as Liquid takes on NSH!

GSTL kicks off tonight at 09:10 GMT (+00:00).

Recap: SlayerS-EG vs ZeNEX

– SlayerS-EG defeats ZeNEX 5 – 4 in nail-biter

Match results from Live Report Thread by Dodgin.
+ Show Spoiler [Results] +

(Z)Life < Entombed Valley > (Z)CoCa

Slayers-EG wins 5-4!

SlayerS-EG became the first team to advance to the second round from preliminary group A, overcoming a spirited challenge from underdogs ZeNEX after trailing 1 – 3 halfway through the match. Life was once again at the head of the charge for ZeNEX, scoring three early wins over SlayerS-EG, while also taking down his second ace in two days with a victory over SlayerS_MMA. Though Life's rampage was eventually stopped, SlayerS were pushed to the verge of defeat when Line defeated Puzzle to make the score 4 – 3 in ZeNEX's favor.

With MMA and Puzzle already defeated, it was not a SlayerS player, but Evil Geniuses' JYP who was charged with saving the day. SlayerS' faith in their partner proved to be very well placed, as JYP came through with two clutch performances to rescue the team. After using warp prism and voidray tactics to defeat Line, he continued to roll over Extreme in the final, deciding match of the night.

SlayerS-EG now moves on to Group A in the second round, joining Prime, Mvp, and one yet to be determined team from the other qualifier group (containing LG-IM, TSL, and Fnatic). ZeNEX gets one more chance to qualify for the next round, and they will await the winner of Team Liquid vs New Star HoSeo in the final match of the group.

Player of the match: (P)EG.JYP

Life deserves a special mention for tearing apart MMA right after defeating HerO, but the real star of the night was Evil Geniuses' JYP. He had all the pressure in the world on him coming out as the final runner with two opponents to beat, but his micro and execution were largely on point as he delivered in the clutch. Terran snipers will be a problem for JYP, but with his great skill at PvZ and PvP, he's sure to continue being a great asset for SlayerS-EG down the line. Now, if he would only start doing the same for Evil Geniuses...

Game of the night: Game Four - MMA vs Life

Though it was a nine game series, none of the games were particularly great. Once a player had the lead, he didn't let go, and the games ended up playing out fairly mundanely. You may as well check out MMA vs Life, to see how a rising Zerg star was able to take down MMA in a ZvT, on Antiga Shipyard of all maps.

NS HoSeo

Team Liquid

by NrGmonk

Where They Stand

Team Liquid came off their last match looking fairly feeble after being all-killed by the supposedly weakest Korean team in GSTL. Their only win came from a shaky looking Zenio in a game where his opponent had an advantage and squandered it away. Their ace, Hero, could not even take one map in his best matchup on a favorable map. Jinro, in his return to the GSL stage, did not get to show his gameplay as he was caught unprepared by some of the fastest mutalisks we’ve ever seen. The twin foreigner Zergs, Haypro and Code A qualifier finalist TLO, were able put up a good fight, but looked outclassed by Life in the end.

That’s one way to look at it, but the other, more glass half full outlook taken by some Liquid members, is that it was a valuable learning and team-bonding experience. Another plus going for Liquid is that Taeja will be joining Liquid’s ranks in their next match, an addition that will surely boost both Team Liquid’s spirits and actual strength as a team.

*****

New Star HoSeo, in their match versus Slayers, looked like an incomplete team. They questionably sent out their ace, Jjakji, to beat one of Slayers’ weaker players. After Jjakji lost, NSH found themselves in a difficult situation to try to take out Puzzle. They initially tried sending out San in a PvP on an unfamiliar map with a tricky strategy and then sent out Sting, a player that just seemed outclassed by the solid and complete Puzzle. Finally when that failed, NSH was forced to send out their last remaining best player, Seal, in his worst matchup, crossing their fingers that he could get a miracle win and then have a good chance versus Slayers’ last player, MMA.

In summary, we learned that day that NSH struggles with solid Protosses such as Puzzle, as Jjakji is the only one with a particularly good versus Protoss match-up on the team. With Hero, a recent round of 4 Code S Protoss, leading the charge for Liquid, this could prove to be a problem for the New Stars.

Players of Interest

Team Liquid: (T)TaeJa
Taeja must have been disappointed yesterday when he got off his plane, coming home from the Red Bull Battlegrounds, only to learn that his team lost in such disappointing fashion without him in their first team league match. His return, however, puts Team Liquid’s roster count up to slightly less anemic six and gives them two top level Code S players. Hero will be especially relieved as now the burden of the team won’t all be on his shoulders. Taeja’s experience in the GSTL will also prove valuable as he is known for all-killing two teams in his GSTL run with Slayers.

NSH: (Z)Seal
NSH’s success in team leagues has always been a team effort. In every match they’ve won, a different player was the MVP. However, one player stands out as extremely reliable. Every time a high level Terran , Seal will be sent out to clean him up, and a vast majority of the time, he wins and goes on to win even more games.

I know you guys like the GSL statistics GOM posts during their matches. Here’s one I researched on my own. When NSH first broke out on the scene, they sent Seal as either the starter or against Protoss where he went 0-2. Since then, they have learned their lesson and almost exclusively been sending him out against Terrans and in all the team leagues(GSTL, IPL TAC, KSL) thus far, he is 10-4 when sent out against a Terran while having an overall 1-4 record when sent out against Protoss. This does not include the numerous Terrans and Zergs he’s gone on the kill after he wins his first game.

It is clear that Seal has an extremely strong matchup in ZvT and an extremely weak matchup in ZvP. He has even admitted in an interview that his ZvP was his reason for not being as successful as he could be. However, ZvP aside, Seal’s prowess at ZvT makes him an excellent counter, a sniper even, against Liquid’s new hope Terran hope Taeja.

The Aces

Team Liquid: (P)Liquid`HerO
While Hero did not perform well in his last match, he is still widely considered to be Team Liquid’s ace. Hero will be trying to exploit NSH’s weakness against solid Protoss I had touched on earlier, but I would argue that he will have a harder time than Puzzle did.

The biggest problem is that Hero has a definite weakness to Protoss, a race which has knocked him out of many major tournaments. He was recently knocked out of the IPL tournament of champions 0-6 by CreatorPrime, knocked out of IPL4 by Huk, and knocked out the GSL 0-3 by Squirtle. A Protoss sniper killing Hero seems much more plausible than one taking out Puzzle.

In addition, Puzzle, while having relatively poor results for his skills, is regarded by Koreans as an extremely strong player, with MC saying that he has top 2 PvT in the world, along with Parting. While Hero probably is at least very close to that skill in PvT, this highlights another potential problem for Hero. Jjakji, a Terran and Hero’s biggest threat, took Puzzle to a very close game on a Protoss favored map, so he’ll be a very formidable challenge for Hero to overcome.

Finally, Hero’s biggest strength, his legendary PvZ will be less useful versus NSH. NSH’s Seal has weak ZvP, and NSH’s other Zerg, Freaky, while showing very interesting play, does not have enough proven games or experience to pose a very plausible change to Hero.

NSH: (T)Jjakji
As the best player on NSH with the best overall results, Jjakji is the de facto ace, even if he usually performs around the same level as Seal in team leagues. However, you could argue that Jjakji is a more rounded player and Seal’s sniper-esque skillset is more suited for team leagues. Being the best, most well rounded player on a team, put a bit of pressure on you, however, as while his lesser teammates can usually pick up a win off of better players on paper, it is up to Jjakji to win more than that in order to generate the five wins required to win a match. We saw this in NSH’s last match where after Jjakji fell after getting NSH ahead, NSH struggled immensely to close out the match.

In some ways, Jjakji’s role of ace is less significant against Liquid, a team with not as many strong, solid players, who NSH’s supporting cast should be favored over. On the other hand, however, JJakji is still NSH’s best chance to take out the opposing ace, Hero.

Prediction

Given the proclivities of both teams, the matchup preferences of the players, and the small size of Liquid’s roster, I think this match will go rather predictably, centered around the aforementioned four players, Hero and Taeja from Team Liquid and Jjakji and Seal from NSH. Somewhere in the middle of the match, Taeja will be sent out from Liquid. Seal will try to take him out, and Hero will be sent to avenge Taeja. Then, Jjakji will swoop in to attempt to save his team. Whichever team can somehow surprise and break that chain of predictable events will have an almost insurmountable advantage and most probably win the match.

However, given that Team Liquid has weaker backup players in comparison to NSH and the fact that this imaginary simulation I’ve cooked up in my head favors NSH, I’m going to have to give the Korean based team the match.

NSH 5 - 3 TL

My greatest expectation is to see Jinro play for at least 20 minutes. TL gonna get stomped anyway.

I can't wait for the Banjo all-kill. Come on, you all know it is coming!

In reality, I think that it is right on key with the fact of those top four contenders, but TLO has a big chance to pull out a win or two, and even Jinro has a fairly good chance, I believe, (I mean, he has taken a game off of every player in his NASL group, save Polt) and I think that he can get a kill or two if he plays his top game (though, that could probably be said about anybody on Liquid).

On paper, NSHS has the advantage, but I still can see it go either way - upsets are very possible when Liquid is playing. Go Liquid!

TL Really disappointed me that last time, but I'M getting my hopes back up as TeaJa is now playing as well. still, maybe hero and TaeJa will win ONE or two games, but there is just not enough backup in the roster, as stated in the article ^^

I actually think TL can take this series handily. HerO/Taeja are better than anyone on NSH. When was the last time Jjakji has shown top level play? I mean don't get me wrong, he's a great player, but his GSL-winning greatness was kind of a flash in the pan.

I think you're thinking of HuK. The only game I remember of HerO was him playing in the starting match, and that match happened to be the first to I saw mass Collosi (HerO) die to Chargelot Immotal Archon (Other Protoss). That and the beatdown DRG gave him.

Realistically, I feel that HerO and Taeja are both more solid all-around players than anyone on NSH, so I anticipate it being a good match. I think the match will be decided by how well the supporting players from each team will play. All of the liquid players have shown flashes of brilliance, and I'm more than confident in Zenio and TLOs skills and I would love to see Jinro and Haypro play well and take a game off NSH!

Bottom line: I set my alarm for the last Liquid GSTL match (2:15am here TT) but fell asleep before it came on... I will be watching this time and I know the boys in blue will show the GSTL their strength! Liquid Fighting!

Not in the slightest =)

After all he took out SlayerS Zerg ace, their Terran Ace, and had to get sniped by their Protoss Ace (after beating their reliable Protoss protege). Most kills, important opponents, impressive fashion. Unfortunately Puzzle got in his way and once Puzzle failed it was down to the scraps to see who could get luckiest on the day =p

I was kinda disappointed at Life vs Puzzle game, it seemed like Life didn't even bother to try to win that game, i was really hoping for an all kill i guess.

I believe it all comes down to Hero´s nerves. I don´t believe that there are many Protoss with equally strong PvP given Heros incredible mechanics and micro.

The GSTL scheduling (and format) seems to be getting more awful every season. =/

Why not at least have group B play the first round before continuing with Group A?

The problem is if they do 2 groups concurrently, players do not have any significant time off (3-5 days), that means big ticket player would probably choose foreign tournaments instead, while support players don't have a chance to compete outside Korea until the team is out of GSTL.

Didn't think it would have been so close. Zenex is the worst Korean SC2 team IMO, and by a fairly significant margin....

That said, I agree with the prediction. NSH is a very strong team.

I hope everyone on the team in Korea is at the house right now and that you've been practising and analyzing together a lot. Maybe ask Artosis to come in as a coach and support in the studio for you guys?

Liquid hwaiting!

I want to see an actual foreigner team competing in the GSTL. Teamliquid is 3/5 Koreans, and basically all their hopes rely on those 3 performing well. EG partnered with SlayerS, so there's that. Fnatic is in the same boat as Liquid. :-(
The only hope is that Stephano for some reason travels to Korea, and gets to compete alongside TSL. He's the only one foreigner that has ace-like potential for any of the Korean teams.

I agree.

I believe it all comes down to Hero´s nerves. I don´t believe that there are many Protoss with equally strong PvP given Heros incredible mechanics and micro.

Hero has fairly bad PvP compared to his other matchups, I would bet on loads of PvP snipers against him if it came down to that. I don't think Hero is gonna be as useful to TL this GSTL as people think he will be, he is an obvious threat but seems easily snipeable.

Taeja or HerO needs to take 3 matches for Liquid to have a chance. NSH is a very balanced team, Liquid needs a...(wait for it).....heroic performance from their ace to advance

So if TL now wins tonight's match, do you get fired as a TL writer for going against them?

And can someone clarify, the loser of this match is out of the GSTL, and the other 3 teams are in?

Loser of tonight's match is eliminated, while the winner faces Zenex. The winner of that match advances along with Slayers-EG, while the loser is eliminated as well.

So if TL wins, they rematch against Zenex, and if they beat Zenex then, TL advances to group stage 2 and Zenex is eliminated.

That said, I agree with the prediction. NSH is a very strong team.

Honestly It's MMA's fault that it was so close, he went out to snipe Life on Antiga and got crushed.

On a similar note, I don't think that was even close to the game of the night... the PvT between Puzzle and Harrier was an actual close game with back and forth Give PvT the respect it sometimes deserves!

Eh they mentioned multiple times in the preview or cast by Khaldor/Wolf(I forget which) that Zenex feared him about all else.

These Matches are at 6:10 am here. Doesn't matter, I stay up for them anyways.

I'm pretty confidant that TLO can snipe Jjakji which I think throws this a little TL favoured. Zenio is a top tier player as well and should be able to pick up a win or two. Honestly I'm most curious who TL's fifth man will be if they need him, it seems close between Jinro and HayprO.

I really wish the whole team was in korea so that Ret, Sheth and NonY could add some variety to the depth of the line-up.

I know we'll talk about JYP's and his clutch victories for SlayerS but in my opinion the player that stands above everyone so far in this season has to be Life. Besides the all kill against TL the kid also managed to take out MMA and some change from SlayerS. Watch out for him to peak and gain some global recognition this season.

Taeja and Hero need to come through for TL badly or they are just going to lose again as bad as it feels to say it.

We may be biased but JYP got almost a little bit lucky that line did not scout the prism. I mean yeah JYP cleared out the ovies but that push always kills zergs when they don't scout it so why not put a ling there or something ;p JYP also got the absolute best scenario possible in PvP, Stargate vs Robo, then Extreme build a robo bay and he was sooooooooooo far behind. Not to take anything away from JYP because he is a great great player but I do not think that he deserved man of the match ;p

Despite TL getting all-killed against Zenex, I think they still have a shot. NSHS is a pretty strong team though, and Seal is an absolute beast, but I was pretty impressed with play by TLO recently and if he can pick up a win as well as getting a strong performance from two of their three Koreans on their roster they just might be able to pull this out.

Liquid just don't have the supporting players to win. Any of NSH's players could cause an upset and take the win for NSH. Liquid are relying too much on a couple of players.

I believe in TL!

Taeja, Hero, and Zenio all pack a hefty punch, and TLO is definitely no slouch. Add Jinro (who will have a better chance to practice, unlike their match against Zenex) and Haypro, and you have solid support that can always cause an upset.

Ren's Team Strategy Recommendations

TLPD Stats for the TL 6 (Korean Database, 2012/1/1 - present)
+ Show Spoiler +

Taeja (T - code S)
vT 66.67%
vZ 81.58%
vP 58.33%

Hero (P - code S)
vT 76.92%
vZ 68.75%
vP 33.33%

Zenio (Z - code A)
vT 36.84%
vZ 62.50%
vP 50.00%

Jinro
vT 61.54%
vZ 15.38%
vP 50.00%

TLO
data set too small

Haypro
data set too small

Taeja looks well-rounded with some very good TvZ. Hero has that noted weakness vP, but to be fair, it was a small sample size and his losses were to Squirtle and Puzzle (and a 2-1 victory vs JYP)... NSHS can't send out that quality of PvPer. He also has very solid vT snipe potential. Zenio has a surprising weakness vT, but solid vZ. Jinro is surprisingly solid vT, but extremely weak vZ. TLO and Haypro are still new to the Korean competitive scene (this time around), but recent belief is that TLO is getting pretty strong.

TLPD Stats for NSHS's Top 7 (Korean Database, 2012/1/1 - present)
+ Show Spoiler +

Jjakji (T - code A)
vT 52.27%
vZ 61.11%
vP 50.00%

Seal (Z - code A)
vT 42.11%
vZ 100.00%
vP 40.00%

Freaky (Z - code A)
vT 57.14%
vZ 50.00%
vP 42.86%

San (P)
vT 50.00%
vZ 37.50%
vP 76.92%

Tassadar (P)
vT 50.00%
vZ 33.33%
vP 68.75%

Sculp (T)
vT 55.56%
vZ 50.00%
vP 25.00%

Sting (T)
vT 36.36%
vZ 35.29%
vP 52.17%

NSHS has no code S players this season and 3 code A players. Jjakji is okay in all matchups with some vZ snipe potential. Seal's ZvZ seems really solid and should be a concern, but is below average in the other two matchups. Freaky is a bit of an unknown code A with a slight preference for vT and a slight weakness to vP. San and Tassadar have almost mirror stats and while both look like high quality PvP snipers, the opponents in those matches were mostly low Code A and Code B. The coach even had more faith in Sting (TvP favored, but weak overall) instead of Tassadar as a PvP sniper against Puzzle last match. That only leaves Sculp left to talk about who has a glaring vP weakness, but is otherwise decent.

Liquid Game Plan
NSHS top two are strong versus Zerg. Unfortunately for Liquid, half their lineup is Zerg. This will probably be a week to play Jinro over Haypro to limit the Zerg presence to TLO and Zenio. Freaky is a good starting player (well-rounded) so expect to play vs Z first. I like a Zenio start again for TL with a good chance of picking up the ZvZ win. NSHS would likely want to play a terran vs Zenio and that may force out Jjakji very early (Sculp would be a decent play at that point as well). If NSHS plays Jjakji with 4 spots left on TL, I like an attempt by Jinro to take him out. Jinro has some pretty good TvT and an okay chance to take out Jjakji, but the real goal is to force a long TvT and give Taeja a good look at what he will be facing. If Jinro fails to win, I like sending TLO next for another potential snipe, despite being ZvT strength vs TvZ strength (you don't want to send TLO out 4th or 5th with Seal still on the bench, but he could be held for later if Seal goes down early). If Jjakji is still standing, it'd be time to send in Hero (leaving Taeja as an ace). Hopefully Jjakji will be taken out before Hero. If so, I prefer Hero as the final boss (though I don't have a good reason why). I don't see Seal as a huge threat to TL with Taeja and Hero sitting on very nice vZ records at the end of the TL lineup. PLEASE DON'T PLAY TAEJA AND HERO TOO EARLY. So the real question is whether or not TL can beat the NSHS protosses. TL isn't particularly strong vs protoss, but with Taeja and Hero as the final two bosses, I feel like they should be able to take out the code B (maybe low A) protoss threat NSHS throws at them.

Honestly, TL has two Code S and one high Code A/low S players and NSHS isn't close to that. At this point, ZENEX is ahead of NSHS in terms of player ability, they just don't have the name recognition yet. Picking off Hero or Taeja in one game isn't a huge upset. Picking off both of them if they're played as the final two bosses (in either order) would be a huge upset.

TLDR: Play Zenio first, follow with Jinro in almost all cases, TLO 3rd, and save Taeja and Hero for last two (if vs Jjakji, go Hero 4th, otherwise Taeja 4th). If anyone can get through those two in order, they deserve the win.
Playing better than standard requires deviation. This divergence usually results in sub-standard play.

Rough deal for TL. =(
Beauty is not the goal of competitive sports, but high-level sports are a prime venue for the expression of human beauty. The relation is roughly that of courage to war.

It's going to be a tough match for Liquid.

I hope they send out TLO first though, and hopefully not in a zvz.

I honestly think TL takes this 5-2 or 5-3. If their opening player wins, I think 5-2, otherwise 5-3. I don't think it's unrealistic at all.

Though it was a nine game series, none of the games were particularly great.

exactly this... the teamleague and all these allkills / winning streaks are highly devalued if the games are decided by stupid mistakes -.- especially the win over MMA means nothing when MMA plays like a random code B terran, though it is nice for the record / statistics toi have.

I like how this time TL tasted how hard it is to win in GSTL and this time is giving themselves a fair prediction :D

I think Jinro will be sent out first. I think he performs better the less pressure that is on him, and if he can start Liquid off with a win, he has redeemed himself in so many ways.

Yes, I think Jinro should start first. However, I think that Zenio will be Liquid's first player again, as he was able to perform his job in their first matchup before he was sniped...

That being said, TASSADAR HWAITING!!!!

got my 허브컵 (chicken, ddeok, potato cup) in front of me and I am ready for a teamliquid win.

If I already sin with eating a whole box of the one above then make it worth teamliquid !!

Many many comments can be made about TL's substandard play today but it would be unfair to not mention that Tassadar is playing super well.

OH man this next match is going to be nail biting. Jinro and Tassadar are two of my favorite players (even though Jinro snubbed me at MLG providence when I tried to shake his hand)

Ok if Tassadar wins it will complete the all kill.
However, if Hero wins, Hero will reverse all-kill.

This is my prediction

to be honest, i would have had hero fighting on the second position. TLO is weakest against P.

It was a hard series to watch
+ Show Spoiler +

because i know that Liquid is capable of competing at this level, and i'm sure the team feels a sense of disappointment because they know they are capable too
HerO's game on atlantis space bear was a great morale boost though.

I'm still looking forward to cheering Liquid on in the next GSTL if Liquid chooses to participate again
