One Day to Victory

With the dust settled on the meat-grinder that is the main day of a LAN, only Huk and MarineKing stand at the entryway to the upper-side of the grand finals. Still hopeful from the losers side are PartinG, DongRaeGu, Oz, and viOlet, and tomorrow they will all fight for the Winter Arena trophy.

Unsurprisingly, Huk is the only player born outside Korea still in contention. Following him on the made it furthest among foreigners list is NaNiwa, who made it to the fifth round of losers, and Ret and DeMuslim who each made it to the fourth.

Swedish Protoss NaNiwa had perhaps the most impressive run of today after falling to MarineKing last night, getting revenge on both of his semi-rivals NesTea and Leenock before falling to DongRaeGu late in losers. Even more of note perhaps is the amount of cheese he had to face, having to defend against all-ins five times in his last three PvZs.

The rest of the matches were largely to-be-expected results, with the exception of Grubby. The loved Warcraft player had a strong showing by beating Losira and ThorZain, and came within inches of taking down DeMuslim.

Update Log

+ Show Spoiler [Update Log] +

03:12 GMT (+00:00) HuK 2 - 0 Oz. Huk makes DTs again after they both expand, this time they do damage before an observer is out. Huk pushes out with archons, zealots, and stalkers and Oz is slow to forcefield his ramp and Huk walks over his army to take the game.

03:11 GMT (+00:00) viOlet 2 - 0 GanZi. GanZi tries several marine-tank-banshee pushes after a 15cc, but viOlet always has enough to take them down. The game threatens to go into a base-trade but viOlet's brood lords push the action back to GanZi's main, and after an extended battle he succumbs.

03:09 GMT (+00:00) NaNiwa 0 - 2 DongRaeGu. DRG 6 pools. NaNiwa holds by retreating into his main with a cannon, and gets ready to 4-gate. DRG then masses lings and runs into NaNi's main to kill him before his gateways have finished.

02:59 GMT (+00:00) NaNiwa 0 - 1 DongRaeGu. NaNiwa looks even in the midgame when he takes out DRG's third, but DongRaeGu keeps attacking in multiple directions and keeps NaNi's army scattered enough to take him down.

02:55 GMT (+00:00) HuK 1 - 0 Oz. Huk opens with DTs, an expands after they do no damage. In the midgame Oz chooses to take a third while Huk is massing colossus, and when Huk attacks into Oz's natural he barely comes out ahead.

02:47 GMT (+00:00) viOlet 1 - 0 GanZi. Violet opens the match with a familiar roach-ling-baneling all-in against a fast 3cc. GanZi holds with help from a banshee, but viOlet's followup attacks keep his SCV count very low. Eventaully viOlet charges in with lings, banelings, and infestors and fungals GanZi to death.

02:25 GMT (+00:00) Leenock 1 - 2 NaNiwa. NaNiwa takes an early third, Leenock is unable to force a cancel or destroy it with roaches. NaNiwa later pushes out after a second attack at his third, and stops Leenock's defense cold with great forcefields and target firing an overlord full of banelings.

02:23 GMT (+00:00) PartinG 0 - 2 MarineKing. MarineKing opened with a 2rax that included a reactor and a techlab, and PartinG was unable to find enough forces to fight it off.

02:18 GMT (+00:00) viOlet 2 - 0 DeMuslim. DeMuslim proxies 2-rax in the center of the map and kills viOlet's natural with several bunkers. Violet responds by making banelings, breaking down DeMuslim's wall, and killing him.

02:15 GMT (+00:00) PartinG 0 - 1 MarineKing. Parting opens with early gateway and immortal aggression which MKP repels, and then as he is teching up to colossus MKP drives him back and elevators into the main to win.

02:11 GMT (+00:00) viOlet 1 - 0 DeMuslim. ViOlet chooses a ling-infestor style build, while DeMuslim plays a game with marines, tanks, and a few early banshees. DeMuslim plays very passively and doesn't pressure viOlet at all, and he is able to take the map and win with infestors and brood lords.

01:46 GMT (+00:00) Leenock 1 - 1 NaNiwa. NaNiwa forge fast-expands as per usual and Leenock blocks it with a proxy hatchery. He follows it up with a roach-ling all-in and wins.

01:35 GMT (+00:00) MC 0 - 2 GanZi. MC opens with phoenixes after an expansion, presumably asssuming GanZi will banshee like every other TvP today. Unfortunately for him, he doesn't, and when the time comes to fight GanZi has more bio than MC can deal with.

01:33 GMT (+00:00) Grubby 1 - 2 DeMuslim. DeMuslim busts out the 1-1-1. He kills Grubby's base without challenge, and they enter a base race while Grubby retakes a hidden expo. DeMuslim has the bigger army by far but makes him kill it anyway for some reason.

11:21 GMT (+00:00) Ret 0 - 2 DongRaeGu. Antiga cross positions. Ret expands, DRG stays on one base and makes a lot of zerglings. Ret can't hold the attack.

01:20 GMT (+00:00) MC 0 - 1 GanZi. GanZi opts for a delayed cloaked banshee, which kills a few probes but doesn't cause too much damage. As MC is teching to blink on two bases, GanZi pushes in with several cloaked banshees, marines, and tanks, and slowly sieges the natural and finally the main to kill MC.

01:18 GMT (+00:00) Grubby 1 - 1 DeMuslim. In a midgame where each has 3 bases, DeMuslim out-multitasks Grubby with drops and constant harass. He kills his expansions and a lot of probes at the main and Grubby taps out.

01:12 GMT (+00:00) Ret 0 - 1 DongRaeGu. DRG 6 pooled. Ret did not hold.

01:00 GMT (+00:00) NaNiwa 2 - 1 NesTea. NaNiwa opens with proxy double 9-gate against hatch first. His first zealots arrive as the pool is completing and NesTea is dead.

00:57 GMT (+00:00) Grubby 1 - 0 DeMuslim. They play a long standard macro game, where the turning point is DeMuslim getting his army caught in a choke against colossus and storm. DeMuslim puts up a bit of a fight after but he can't replace his forces fast enough.

00:50 GMT (+00:00) NaNiwa 1 - 1 NesTea. NesTea opens with 10 pool and pulls half his drones to cancel NaNiwa's attempt to FFE, followed by taking 2 bases. NaNiwa makes 4 gates and cancel's NesTea's third after, while taking his own natural. NaNiwa stays on strong 2 base play and NesTea's roach-ling army can't stop him.

00:48 GMT (+00:00) GanZi 2 - 1 Socke. GanZi opens with cloaked banshee, kills a handful of probes. From there he goes into 1-1-1, which Socke can't even put up a fight against.

00:31 GMT (+00:00) GanZi 1 - 1 Socke. Socke opens a normal 1-gate expand and then after adding gates simply walks in and kills GanZi thanks to a late bunker.

00:28 GMT (+00:00) NaNiwa 0 - 1 NesTea. NesTea opens with a 2base roach-ling all-in that NaNiwa doesn't see until too late.

00:27 GMT (+00:00) MC 1 - 2 PartinG Metalopolis close air. Parting does this really cool cannon rush where he seals off the low ground using MC's natural minerals, and then makes cannons that can hit MC's mineral line. Even HotBid is impressed.

00:21 GMT (+00:00) MC 1 - 1 PartinG Both players open blink, with MC deciding to go nexus after while Parting adds two gates and prepares to attack. Both players have similar stalker numbers, but MC has a better arc and defends.

00:13 GMT (+00:00) GanZi 1 - 0 Socke. GanZi opens with cloaked banshees and transitions into a light 1-1-1 variant where he gets a CC. He kills Socke's natural easily, but Socke breaks the push after and makes one last ditch attempt to kill GanZi at the Terran natural. GanZi holds and takes the lead in the series.

00:10 GMT (+00:00) MC 0 - 1 PartinG Tal'Darim Altar. Both players 4-gate, with MC doing the three stalker before WG finishes version. Parting's first warp in though is from a pylon on low ground to the natural high ground of MC, which catches him off guard and the game snowballs from there.

00:04 GMT (+00:00) viOlet 0 - 2 MarineKing. MarineKing makes lots of marines and pressures viOlet's front constantly, where the Zerg holds with lings until he gets infestors and partially staves off death. MarineKing comes back with another wave as he is waiting for a spire and kills the near-unit-less viOlet.

23:49 GMT (+00:00) viOlet 0 - 1 MarineKing. Violet went for very strong 2-base play, repeatedly busting MKP and attempting to all-in to win. Back and forth several times, MKP held off just barely each time and went on to stop viOlet from having a third and won the game.

23:41 GMT (+00:00) Leenock 0 - 2 Oz Dual Sight, Leenock goes burrow roaches while Oz makes sentry stalker immortal. Oz goes to attack and some nice forcefields secure him the game.

23:25 GMT (+00:00) Haypro 0 - 2 DeMuslim. They each take several bases, and DeMuslim repeatedly pushes into HayprO's territory with marines, tanks, and thors. Trading favorably each time he gains ground with each attempt, until HayprO has nothing left.

23:18 GMT (+00:00) Leenock 0 - 1 Oz Daybreak, both players fast expand, Leenock takes his third, going roach infestor. Standard army for Oz, who moves out and kills Leenock's third. Leenock backstabs with roaches and kills Oz's natural. Oz comes back to defend, and his next push with blink is too big for Leenock to handle.

23:15 GMT (+00:00) Huk 2 - 1 Ret. Huk opens with 8 gates and warps in primarily zealots. Ret makes a valiant attempt at holding with roaches but eventually falls to reinforcements, and GGs after all his drones are dead.

23:05 GMT (+00:00) Haypro 0 - 1 DeMuslim. DeMuslim pushes into HayprO's natural and sieges up with marines and tanks. HayprO defends it well and breaks the push, but then overextends himself trying to stop Terran from picking up more bases and loses his army for nothing, causing DeMuslim to wipe him out.

23:04 GMT (+00:00) Huk 1 - 1 Ret. Huk denies Ret's third with a 6-gate attack, and then pressures him in the center while denying more bases. They fight for a long time, and Ret runs out of steam first.

23:03 GMT (+00:00) GanZi 2 - 0 Mvp.Update from Liquipedia.

23:01 GMT (+00:00) Socke 2 - 0 merz. Hour long game on Shakuras where they split the map and battle in the middle constantly. Socke is able to take 12 and 6 and win the long war of attrition.

22:53 GMT (+00:00) Huk 0 - 1 Ret. They make it to the midgame with 3 bases a piece, and battle constantly for control of the center. Ret is able to kill some probes with a ling runby, and Huk runs out of steam when infestors come into play and stop his advancement.

22:22 GMT (+00:00) NaNiwa 2 - 1 Sheth. NaNiwa takes an early third, and Sheth tries to pressure it with hydra-roach and drops. He is unable to do any real damage, and NaNiwa's army destroys him easily in direct fights.

22:18 GMT (+00:00) Mvp 0 - 1 GanZi. Shakuras close air, both players go tank marine. MVP gets an early banshee, it dies to a viking. MVP gets earlier siege and attacks, but it gets crushed by unsieged tanks, SCVs, and landed vikings. Ganzi rides the advantage to the win.

22:17 GMT (+00:00) ThorZain 1 - 2 Grubby. They split the map with few engagements and max out. Grubby picks off several full energy ghosts before a big battle, and powers through Thorzain with colossus and storm.

22:04 GMT (+00:00) NaNiwa 1 - 1 Sheth. NaNiwa goes for strong 2-base play again, but this time it includes colossus. Sheth is unable to engage in a favorable place and NaNiwa rolls him over.

21:58 GMT (+00:00) ThorZain 1 - 1 Grubby. Grubby goes up to 6 gates after his expansion and then breaks down Thorzain's natural.

21:49 GMT (+00:00) NaNiwa 0 - 1 Sheth. NaNiwa tries a 6-gate immortal attack with a warp prism for reinforcements, and Sheth holds with hydras and roaches. NaNiwa's third is too late and Sheth overpowers him.

21:47 GMT (+00:00) ThorZain 1 - 0 Grubby. Grubby opens with double forge, and goes straight to templar tech. Thorzain attacks when he gets his first two medivacs and kills the Protoss army before it gets too big.

21:43 GMT (+00:00) NesTea 2 - 1 Sjow. Nestea played very safe, going fast baneling speed, but Sjow made some critical mistakes by letting his first few pushes get surrounded and destroyed by a few baneling detonations.

21:39 GMT (+00:00) TheStC 2 - 0 Ddoro. Ddoro opens blink stalkers all-in with an obs to blink into TheStC's main. He doesn't do nearly enough damage and has to GG.

21:36 GMT (+00:00) TheStC 1 - 0 Ddoro. Ddoro tries a 6-gate + immortal timing. TheStC scouts it, and pre-empts the army before it even hits his natural. He picks off the sentries and ddoro taps out.

21:27 GMT (+00:00) NesTea 1 - 1 Sjow. Sjow hellion expands, which is repelled easily. He then masses hellions, and kills all of NesTea's drones. NesTea leaves shortly after.

21:14 GMT (+00:00) NesTea 1 - 0 Sjow. Sjow does no damage with a hellion expand, when he leaves his base for the first time NesTea rolls over him.

21:10 GMT (+00:00) DongRaeGu 2 - 0 SaSe. SaSe sits back and builds a huge army, slowly taking his third and not leaving the safety of his base. When he finally does DRG backstabs and kills all his buildings. SaSe tries for a hidden nexus and it doesn't work.

20:56 GMT (+00:00) Axslav 1 - 2 Haypro. Haypro opens 10pool speed, and kills all of Axslav's cannons after making a lot of lings.

20:53 GMT (+00:00) drewbie 0 - 2 merz. Drewbie 15cc, merz takes a quick hidden third, marine-tank position battle again. Drewbie doesn't see the third for a very long time, and merz wins out slowly pushing across the map and pressing his economic advantage.

20:52 GMT (+00:00) DongRaeGu 1 - 0 SaSe. Standard Daybreak openers, SaSe is unable to pressure and DRG amasses a huge army and chokes him to death.

20:48 GMT (+00:00) Axslav 1 - 1 Haypro. Axslav goes for a void ray after forge FE, when it is in Haypro's main he breaks down the Protoss front with roaches. Haypro finishes him off with a drop.

20:34 GMT (+00:00) drewbie 0 - 1 merz. Marine-tank battle for positioning, they split the map and drewbie loses his army with an il-fated push into merz's main. Merz counters and wins.

20:27 GMT (+00:00) Axslav 1 - 0 Haypro. Instead of fighting directly, their armies run around the map across from each other and trade expansions. When they finally fight Axslav's army comes out on top thanks to a mothership and vortex.

20:22 GMT (+00:00) Ganzi 1 - 0 Pomi. Update from Liquipedia.

20:22 GMT (+00:00) NesTea 2 - 0 Idra. Ling baneling skirmishes at the start, NesTea switches to mutas while Idra makes infestors. Idra kills the mutas easily with fungal, but NesTea attacks with roaches before Idra has enough energy for another round of fungals and kills him with superior roach numbers.

20:06 GMT (+00:00) NesTea 1 - 0 Idra. Idra hatch first while NesTea 10 pools, then pulls all his drones when he attacks. NesTea makes an offensive spine on Idra's creep and pushes in, Idra GGs when he loses all drones and his queen.

01:47 GMT (+00:00) FXO_Leenock vs Quantic.NaNiwa - C

  • Game One: NaNiwa forge fast-expands as per usual and Leenock blocks it with a proxy hatchery. He follows it up with a roach-ling all-in and wins.

  • Game Two: Leenock 6 pools, which NaNiwa holds easily and the game stablizes into a normal midgame. Leenock switches to mutas, which aren't very successful and when NaNiwa catches a group of them wandering around while simultaneously killing the Zerg third it's only a short time before it's over.

  • Game Three: NaNiwa takes an early third, Leenock is unable to force a cancel or destroy it with roaches. NaNiwa later pushes out after a second attack at his third, and stops Leenock's defense cold with great forcefields and target firing an overlord full of banelings.

  • Leenock 1 - 2 NaNiwa

01:00 GMT (+00:00) SK.MC vs SlayerS_GanZi - A2

  • Game One: GanZi opts for a delayed cloaked banshee, which kills a few probes but doesn't cause too much damage. As MC is teching to blink on two bases, GanZi pushes in with several cloaked banshees, marines, and tanks, and slowly sieges the natural and finally the main to kill Mc.

  • Game Two: MC opens with phoenixes after an expansion, presumably asssuming GanZi will banshee like every other TvP today. Unfortunately for him, he doesn't, and when the time comes to fight GanZi has more bio than MC can deal with.

  • MC 0 - 2 GanZi

00:30 GMT (+00:00) Quantic.NaNiwa vs IM.NesTea - A1

  • Game One: 00:28 GMT (+00:00) NaNiwa 0 - 1 NesTea. NesTea opens with a 2base roach-ling all-in that NaNiwa doesn't see until too late.

  • Game Two: NesTea opens with 10 pool and pulls half his drones to cancel NaNiwa's attempt to FFE, followed by taking 2 bases. NaNiwa makes 4 gates and cancel's NesTea's third after, while taking his own natural. NaNiwa stays on strong 2 base play and NesTea's roach-ling army can't stop him.

  • Game Three: NaNiwa opens with proxy double 9-gate against hatch first. His first zealots arrive as the pool is completing and NesTea is dead.

  • NaNiwa 2 - 1 NesTea

  • Game Two: In a midgame where each has 3 bases, DeMuslim out-multitasks Grubby with drops and constant harass. He kills his expansions and a lot of probes at the main and Grubby taps out.

  • Game Three: DeMuslim busts out the 1-1-1. He kills Grubby's base without challenge, and they enter a base race while Grubby retakes a hidden expo. DeMuslim has the bigger army by far but makes him kill it anyway for some reason.

  • DeMuslim 2 - 1 Grubby

23:00 GMT (+00:00) aTn.Socke vs SlayerS_GanZi - A2
  • Game One: GanZi opens with cloaked banshees and transitions into a light 1-1-1 variant where he gets a CC. He kills Socke's natural easily, but Socke breaks the push after and makes one last ditch attempt to kill GanZi at the Terran natural. GanZi holds and takes the lead in the series.

  • Game Two: Socke opens a normal 1-gate expand and then after adding gates simply walks in and kills GanZi thanks to a late bunker.

  • Game Three: GanZi opens with cloaked banshee, kills a handful of probes. From there he goes into 1-1-1, which Socke can't even put up a fight against.

  • Socke 1 - 2 GanZi

  • NaNiwa 2 - 1 Sheth

22:00 GMT (+00:00): IM.NesTea vs dignitas.Sjow - A1
  • Game One:. Sjow does no damage with a hellion expand, when he leaves his base for the first time NesTea rolls over him.

  • Game Two: Sjow hellion expands, which is repelled easily. He then masses hellions, and kills all of NesTea's drones. NesTea leaves shortly after.

  • Game Three: Nestea played very safe, going fast baneling speed, but Sjow made some critical mistakes by letting his first few pushes get surrounded and destroyed by a few baneling detonations.

  • NesTea 2 - 1 Sjow

It's always fun to root for the underdogs, especially if they are from your region

The racist remarks are stupid though, no need for any of that.

THANK YOU for the perfectly formatted updates! This is great for those of us who don't want to pay the $20 to see the games, but are still going to go to BarCraft tomorrow and want to know what has happened during the tournament. New TL shirt is in the drier so that I can wear it, too!

Ok, in the game report between Ddoro and TheStC it says in the description of the games that Ddoro lost both games, but the score on the bottom says Ddoro 2-0 TheStC.

I think its a typo that needs to be rectified.

To be honest protoss have been really strong recently speaking as a zerg player. It just seems like the last few patches have changed protoss to be literally zerg killers. Like nerf infestors into the ground, buff the upgrades for protoss, then the range change for Phoenix making it so that the one thing that zergs could fall back on and avoid attacking the protoss death ball and base trade.

I would guess that the next patch will help zergs out a bit and I really hope they do.

I'm not saying he doesn't deserve how for he's gotten in this tournament. But out of all the WB semi-finalists, he probably had the easiest run. His play doesn't look that convincing to me (9gate?) and he's soon gonna be up against way harder opponents.

I'm not saying he doesn't deserve how for he's gotten in this tournament. But out of all the WB semi-finalists, he probably had the easiest run. His play doesn't look that convincing to me (9gate?) and he's soon gonna be up against way harder opponents.

Yeah I usually hate playing the this 'bracket is easier' card, but I would say it would be an upset if huk didnt advance this far.

does anyone know how they designed the bracket? i didnt watch that stupid bracket show. because i would of expected each set of 4 players in a row would contain 1 player from each region + 1 seed from last season, but huk got 1 eu player and 2 NA players.

then in the wider group of 8 of his bracket, the 2 koreans had to play each other first round. this just makes 0 sense to me. i know mvp was a providence seed but thats still 1 korean player under 'average'.

Best MLG yet. The upsets were insaaaaaaane.

It seems to me that the players' understanding and execution of their strategies is just skyrocketing. It seems like when you just understand the meta game, all these guys bring about new metagames all over again. I love it.

First of all, why do you keep calling people foreigners? When playing in New York, the Korean's are foreigners if any. It doesn't make any sense calling people outside of Korea "foreigners". It's equivalent to calling casters aliens.

Secondly, Huk played in my opinion "over his capability" with some DT harass to sweet the cheese cake before he ate it. Oz should have taken that game in a straight up match. He probably will fall face first in his next match ;( Beware of DT's!!

Naniwa did a good job working through waves of lameness and cheese today and for that I am impressed. DeMuslim played good as well, especially vs Nestea, but unfortunately it seemed like every game ate on his nerves and energy and every step of the way he felt further and further from reaching the finals. None of the remaining players that he played had the skill level of Nestea, so he should have been able to go further. Maybe Nestea just played "bad" in that specific game? I don't know. All in all really solid play though.

Props to MLG. I don't pay for GSL because of some of the code A casters and the high price, but this event was worth paying for! They had some less interesting casters at stream 3 (I think), but all in all really well produced!

Ret has very good ZvP. Other pros have talked about it on shows and such. I would also put Oz in the top 3 toss in the world with MC and an open spot for the flavor of the month

Foreigners = non koreans because they are the dominant ones and in BW the scene was primarily in Korea.

It makes it more complicated if you call someone a foreigner based on where the tourney is, its more simple if for every tournament and for every conversation the term foreigner has a clear definition which in the case of SC2 is non Korean.

I see what you did there.

I wish Ret and Demuslim made it further but they both did amazingly well!

Guys if i understand this right PartinG got walkover over DRG in lower bracket because of the extended series rule? (2-1 in upper bracket -> 2-1 in lower). If so this is the biggest bullshit ive seen.

MLG have provided me with free content for a decade. They ahve worked hard to build this from nothing, I do not mind giving them $20 for all the hard work they have put into esports. It looks so professional now and it looks goo enough to be put on television. Go MLG!!

Its $20 for 3 days of entertainment, compared to $12 for 2 hours of potential enteretainment to go see a movie at a theater.
I dont understand how you could even complain about it costing $20 for what they are offering if you go see movies or
pay $6 for a value meal at McDonalds.

Slight BM or Fantasy GG however you want to look at it by Oz in his game 2 against HuK. I would love to know what Oz said to HuK after GG (holding up one finger, I guess meaning one observer). Seemed a little tense for a moment there.
